As the two students went to inspect other parts of the home the metsuke's assistant moved towards the garage. Inside was a very nice black car. It was an Italian model clearly imported but not driven. From the looks of it the owner of the home had done a lot of work on the interior, wheels, and exterior paint job in order to make it look like a trophy. Unfortunately the top of the garage had collapsed, letting in sunlight but also rain. the floor was soaked, and if not for the water proof paint job there was no doubt the car would be destroyed by now. Fortunately, however, the car and the rain water was all that was in the garage. No dead body was visible.

Mikazuki Would go up a badly damaged set of stairs to reach the upper level. As she went up the steps they would creak and even break. The fact she was able to move upstairs without badly hurting herself would prove almost a miracle. upstairs three rooms would be found. One room seemed to be full of maps, charts, and books. A small library made by the owner of the house with old British and Japanese texts. Sadly a lot of the books currently lay scattered across the floor due to the earthquake. The second room would contain a small tea set and tatami floors, clearly the houses' tea room. No tea was spilled on the floor but broken pottery was everywhere. It would be the final room that proved difficult. Mikazuki would not be able to enter it as every time she tried the door seemed to not budge, even when putting force behind it. She would either have to give up on entering, or possibly force it open with a strong attack, possibly from her relic. This could, however, risk causing part of the already broken house to collapse in upon itself.

In the back rooms Eriko would find two rooms already collapsed. Only one room would remain. Inside the room would be full of wood dust from badly damaged wooden beams above the room. Inside the room was a dead woman with her head gashed open. around her head was a pool of old dried blood. She appeared to be an older woman in very fine Geisha clothing. Next to her was spilled tea and an upside down tea kettle.

Mika rushed the last few steps as they creaked and weakened under her weight to snap at the center. Looking back over her shoulder did she note that when going back down there would need to repair them for the way back down. After traversing the stairs would she then head down the hall slowly to investigate the rooms available for her. She checked down the hall first for any holes or obvious cracks on the floor but, like most of the home, it's strangely sound. The Honda princess nodded as she counted the doors and went to tried each one in the order they were approached.

The first one didn't hold much and looked like a basic chart room. Fallen books and some scrolls littered the floor but lacked any kind of disturbing smells if a dead body hidden somewhere behind a desk so it was closed for the next one. "A tactician man," she noted on the short walk to the next room. Inside this room was similar to the other. Many of the items looked to be in order and there was no stains or supplies to show a ceremony was in progress. With little else in the very open set room id Mikazuki closed the door on this room to try the final room on the floor.

"Locked." The girl pouted as her hand tugged on the door only to find it securely shut. She gave it another tug to be sure but it was jammed shut. Due to their task being to survey the grounds and the lack of a body known of the owner, Mikazuki couldn't leave the room alone. "Breaking it would do...if I can," the girl sighed and took her mace to tap against the surface to find a weaker point. "Anyone inside?" Mika asked, swinging her mace to break a hole to at least look inside. "Hello? Anyone inside?" She asked once more while hitting away to make a peep hole.

Initially Eriko's backroom inspection didn't really shed any light on things other than what was expected. Collapsed rooms, debris from the home and not a whole lot else. For a few moments she felt the relief of the expected - no big surprises, nothing shocking whatsoever. Given that they had found one body all ready she was hoping that the rest of the inspection tour would be uneventful. Yet as she moved down the hallway she began to have a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. Something was wrong, or had gone wrong, in the one remaining room in the back of the house. At first she thought she saw a person huddled inside, which spurred the Yamana girl into action.

Eriko carefully made her way through the door enough to get a better look at what she thought would be a survivor to rescue. There was a person there for sure but they weren't moving. She stopped and observed the motionless form in the hopes that there would at least be the slight motion of the woman's chest to signal even shallow breaths. Nothing. That was when the Yamana girl's eyes moved about the room and found the pool of dried blood. No survivor, only another victim of the earthquake. With that notion she began to become a bit ill - her stomach was unsettled and though she'd been in battle before, this was somehow different. Quickly she backed out of the room, felt almost as if she were going to throw up and finally calmed herself enough to avoid such embarrassment.

"There's one body down here, a woman!" she called out loud enough for the metsuke to hear.

The three quickly got to inspecting the seemingly empty home. Upstairs Mikazuki had found a door that seemed impossible to open by regular means. Pulling out her mace she had tapped the weaker parts of the door before finally making a hole in the door itself. The wall around the door seemed to shake a bit as she did so. She wouldn't notice it with the other two rooms but this room was somehow wrong. A strong smell came from the other side of the door. It was the smell of the dead. Nothing could be mistaken for that smell. Mikazuki would have to try extremely hard not to vomit as the smell suddenly seemed to rush forward from the hole she had made. Looking around she would see numerous fallen pieces of roof and support beam apparently barricading the door in place.

Meanwhile Eriko had found a corpse of her own. A woman in full geisha attire who seemed to have died of a head injury. all around her tea had been spilled and the tea set she had been using was completely destroyed.
"There's one body down here, a woman!" Eriko cried as the metsuke's assistant quickly left the garage.
"A WOMAN!" he yelled back before gazing up the broken stairs.
"MS. HONDA, ARE YOU ALRIGHT? WE SEEM TO HAVE FOUND A BODY IN THE BACK ROOMS! PLEASE COME JOIN US!" the metsuke's assistant yelled.

If Eriko inspected the room more she would find that in fact this woman was the only one in the room at the time. What would have been the space across from her was still vacant and one had to wonder if she had simply been making tea on her own.

It didn't take long for the metsuke to confirm he had heard Eriko's report from upstairs. Soon enough this woman's body would be put to rest, as she assumed the spirit must already have been. Then again she didn't know too much about things of the spiritual world so honestly she had no idea. Aware that assistance was coming Eriko stepped further into the room to try and discern had had happened. Was there someone else here with her? Had she died alone?

Judging by the fact there was no trace of another body it seemed as if perhaps she was simply preparing tea for herself. Eriko wondered if she'd been expecting someone else's arrival and had thus begun preparing tea early. Whatever the case it seemed as though the woman dressed in such finery had died alone. Perhaps it had been mercifully quick, but it was still terribly sad. She took a moment to kneel in the spot which should have been occupied by someone else and stared at the lifeless form across from her.

"I'm sorry this happened to you.. I'm sorry I don't remember any prayers for the dead," she apologized, then silently mouthed a few words of remembrance before standing up and waiting for the metsuke.

The heavy scent of death made Mika back away from the hole and holding her nose from the stench but ended up crumpling to the floor and coughing as though all the fresh air in her was violated. It was like decay has set in or something as she shuddered and continued to hold her nose while taking any sort of look she could find. Peeking into the hole again just made her eyes water from the sick air flow. At least the state of the room could give her an idea besides just someone being dead in there due to a lack of an answer. From what she could barely gather, a beam had secured the door shut which would explain its fastened security but little else of the wreckage by the hole placement. It may have been the bed room but hard to say now.

Yelling caught her attention as she kept her note pinched and hit the door again with her mace. Could one body really stink up the whole room like this? Was this the person they were looking for? All she could gather was that the room reeked of death and this may be where the owner met his end.

"I think there's a dead person in this room up here," Mika would yell back in a slightly nasalized voice while keeping her note pinched tightly. "The door is jammed shut though."

"I think there's a dead person in this room up here," Mika shouted down to the Metsuke. The Metsuke's assistant nodded a bit. The next few minutes would be him checking out the back room first and seeing the woman who was crushed to death setting up what appeared to be some kind of tea ceremony. Shaking his head a bit the Metsuke then went back to the living room and looked upstairs.

"Alright, both of you can come down now. If someone is upstairs, dead in what is probably the bedroom then I think it is clear what happened. A geisha from Northern Edo was here preparing tea when the earthquake happened. It is unfortunate, but that is part of things." he said shaking his head a bit and trying to look professional in spite of his cheeks puffing out a bit and his face looking incredibly sea sick. As the metsuke assistant gathered the two he looked at them.
"You both did a great job. We should go report this." he said and then motioned for the two to follow as he went outside.

When they stepped outside they would Ajibana with a rather serious look on his face.
"I'm afraid this survey is over. The house I sent you all away from had a family visiting during the earthquake. They all had on fairly pricey robes and I'm guessing they are a noble family from one province or another. A few special advisers from Edo Castle are on the way to examine. Once we know which family they are we can contact the province they are from. I doubt it is a Daimyo family, but likely closely related." his serious tone made the overcast day seem even darker than it already was. His assistant bowed and made the senior metsuke aware of what the three had found inside of the house they had been assigned.
"You two should head back to the academy. You have both helped out a lot today and i'm grateful. I will tell your teachers that not only was the job well done but you deserve full marks." he said as both his and his assistant's phones vibrated with multiple text messages.

"My assistant will see you back to the Academy." he said, looking at his assistant and leaving no room for argument as the man bowed deeply.
"Yes sir." and with that started ushering the girls towards the train station.

Mika stopped what she was doing then nodded. It may be for the best to not see the body after experiencing a strong stench. She clapped twice before the door in small prayer for the unfortunate circumstances then bowed and left to carefully climbed down the stairs, thankful to get away from the smell as she ran down the broken steps. She needed a moment to try taking in some of the cleaner air then meet with Eriko and the younger metsuke.

The younger metsuke thanked them for the job well done in the short time allowed to provide help. Likely do start on the paper work for the homes they had came across and get notices sent before combing through more districts. Outside they would find the senior, Ajibana, who reported saddening news that the home the briefly came across was a loss of a whole family on visitation. Mika frowned a bit in thoughts of her family and how fortunate that her brother was away at the time and herself being outside when the earthquake happened. She should be happy that everyone is okay for the most part, should happy to be alive, but there were things that needed to be settled first and it won't happen just yet now.

Before being escorted back to the train station for school, Mika walked over to Ajibana and bowed a little prior to sharing the brief experience she saw at the first house. "The person from the first house appears to be at peace. They had very kind eyes, sir." Doubting even the metsuke would believe her and how strange of a delivery this comment was made to him, Mika bowed again and took her leave with the others. Today certainly wasn't what she thought of damage assessment to be but it did open her mind to how other people may have experienced the after effects. It would be telling in the later recovery efforts just how did the people of Edo took this event. During their walk back to the train, Mika looked to the senior Eriko in wonder of how they took this survey task.

The damage assessment mission had not seemed to be about the damage done to buildings all that much. Rather they had spent more time assessing the amount of damage done in terms of mortality. Had Eriko realized just how much death they'd be seeing today she would have looked up some prayers for those departed souls. At best from what she remembered without such efforts, she could be respectful to what remained. When the younger metsuke suggested they check in Eriko stepped out of the room carefully, then clapped twice and bowed. Even if there were no words that came to mind she knew that was part of bidding the dead farewell.

Once they were outside Ajibana informed them of who had been lost in the house they'd seen earlier. Perhaps it was best that they hadn't inspected the place themselves considering what she was told. An entire family visiting Edo had been lost in the earthquake, something that felt like a punch to the gut. Her own family had been back in Tottori thankfully. She had no idea what she would have done if they'd been in Edo when the disaster had struck. Already she felt a profound sense of loss for the relatives of the lost family.

Without a word she waited for Mika to finish speaking to Ajibana, unwilling to rush anyone at the moment. It would be disrespectful to do so. Once the reporting was complete Eriko bowed in farewell to those who'd remain in the neighborhood. After that the Bugei students walked back to the train to head back to the academy. Along the way Eriko started having more difficulty containing her emotions at what they'd uncovered during the mission. Maybe it wasn't that many in the grand scope of things, but Eriko felt more emotional about these few than any of the dead she'd seen in combat missions.

"Thank you for your stellar work today, Honda-san," she said rather stoically, "It's never easy seeing such tragedies in person.." The Yamana girl paused, thought it over and rather than betraying her own feelings she simply bowed, "It was an honor to work with you." With that said, she'd say her farewell to the younger metsuke before boarding the train.

The mission was now at a close. As the group prepared to leave Mika would walk over to Ajibana.
"The person from the first house appears to be at peace. They had very kind eyes, sir." Ajibana looked at the girl curiously. If Mika looked closely she would see a feint bit of water in the corner of Ajibana's old as the senior metsuke gave a solemn nod.
"I certainly hope so." was all he said before turning his back to Mika in order to finish up his work. The metsuke's assistant walked the girls back to the train station he listened intently to what they had to say and adding in his own bit of education for them.

"Don't be discouraged by what you saw. This one part of Edo looks bad, but over all the Edo recovery efforts have gone a long way. We had a lot of paperwork we had to go through in order to inspect private residences of former officials, disaster or not." he explained while handing both girls a few pieces of pineapple flavored hard candy from his pocket. All wrapped to look like pineapples.
"You two did very well today and I'm thankful for the help. Did you have any last minute cares, comments, or concerns about what happened? Any questions about being metsuke inspectors?" he asked curiously as the three got on the train back to Edo Bugei.

Mika checked her belongings as they walked to the station to see if she hadn't forgotten anything during their venture to these broken homes. In hindsight, she realized that damage assessment followed more closely to the bodies than what actual damage itself due to the redundancy of their surroundings. Key structures and shrines would have their care takers report in any major issues along with bursting water mains and sewage.

She walked with her hands held before her as the assistant congratulated Eriko and her of the work they had done and with Eriko doing the same. The Honda princess bowed in turn. "Working today in your company, despite our current surrounds, has been exceptional. Thank you for your volunteered time." It didn't seem like strenuous work but Mika wouldn't be able to stay up a whole day and night's worth of searching for bodies. "Yes. Many of the large clan supports have arrived to make the efforts of the people and homes more bearable," she agreed with the assistant as he disclosed another part of metsuke work; acquiring search permits of these broken properties. One would think such a thing wouldn't be needed but that is the mindset of thieves. They stopped briefly and the girls were given some odd candies Mika hasn't seen before in its pineapple wrapping. Unable to tell if this was a new time or old, she graciously took it and held onto it to try later one. "Thank you as well for the constant vigilance you and the rest of the metsuke do."

"You two did very well today and I'm thankful for the help. Did you have any last minute cares, comments, or concerns about what happened? Any questions about being metsuke inspectors?"

He asked if the girls had any questions to gain insight of what happened and the like. Mika pondered on this as she thought of the homes and people but these aren't the only residents in Edo. There is, after all, the local prison near the ward she tracked down a stray cat earlier this year. They all boarded the train and took their seats in a fairly empty train car. "Has there been precautions made about the prison?"

It was reassuring to know that whatever small amounts of effort she'd put in for the damage assessment had been appreciated. Eriko was fairly certain she was ready for a break from seeing such devastation all the same. She walked slowly with the metsuke's assistant and Mika, unsure of what else she might ask. There were a good many things that would still need to be done in this area but it was probably beyond what a single Bugei student could do.

After Mika asked her own question, Eriko nodded gravely. That was a pretty major concern - the earthquake could well have done some damage to the integrity of the prison. As she stepped onto the empty car Eriko said a silent prayer, or more of a wish, to whatever powers might be listening that the prison was still intact. Escaped prisoners would just add to the chaos which accompanied such a disaster as had befallen the city. There was something else she thought of after she accepted the pineapple hard candy from the assistant metsuke.

"Would some extra food goods be helpful to relief efforts here? My family may not have as much as others, but we would be honored to assist in any way we can," she offered, then her eyes had a slightly far-off look to them as she remarked, "At least that woman I found seems to have passed quickly..."

Realizing suddenly how morbid that sounded, she shook her head and added, "Anyway.. to echo what Honda-san has already said, thank you for all the tireless efforts you make to ensure our safety in Edo."

As they took the train back to Edo Bugei the girls certainly had questions in regards to the state of Edo after the earthquake. First was Mika who asked about the state of Edo Prison. The metsuke's assistant, in spite of being on a surprisingly vacant train car, asked the two girls to get closer. He seemed to look around more for Ajibana-san than anyone else.
"I'll be honest with you girls. Edo Prison is actually built more secure than any other part of Edo. I would even say it is better designed to stand earthquakes than even Edo Castle." and with that pulled away from the girls.
"So I don't think you have to worry." and next came Eriko who offered to donate food and such to the city of Edo. However the metsuke shook his head a bit.
"That is kind of you. I think it would be a good idea to tell the headmaster though. I don't know a lot about donations and supplies." he politely explained.
"I'm just a secretary." and with that the man laughed a bit as the train came to a stop. The door opened and the three got off the train, the metsuke assistant politely walking the girls back to the academy grounds entrance.

"Thank you both, for everything you've down." he said with a polite bow. With that the girls would be allowed to enter the school and resume their lives as normal. At least as normal as life at the Bugei could be. It would be a few days later that they both received a letter to their dorm rooms. The letter read as followed.
"Dear Misses Honda and Yamana,

Thank you both for assisting head metsuke Ajibana with his mission to survey Western Edo. You should both know that the office of the senior metsuke in Edo Castle has sent us a long letter praising your efforts. You have both been given full credit for this mission. I realize that you may have seen some terrible things in Western Edo but I hope you don't let it get to you. Unfortunately this is what happens when a natural disaster his our city. However, the city is fortunate to have such brave Bugei students to assist it's police force.

-Headmaster Hosokawa"

In the letters the students would also find a receipt for a number of shop credits added to their school shop accounts.
