It took her nearly three months to prepare but still it felt so short of time. It snowed light wet flakes that stuck and crunched wherever everyone walked while clinging to street lights and branches to give the strung up lights that extra glow touch to them once the mechanical parts and wires were covered away. A magical sort of effect for this day but was it the right sort of day? There were doubts and timing. She needed to be tactful about this. Her phone came out of her pocket to read about 2:45 PM. Still day light out in the short winter months. Will she come out at all? Her thoughts continued to feed into doubt on picking the time and place. A place away from the school for now where lights were bright and the festival mood continued to carry on till the year would come to an end.

To Yumiko,

Happy holidays, Yumiko. Warm? Since it's winter vacation now, wanna join me for a walk and some hot chocolate? I hear there are specials only around this time of year. I'll meet you at the station near the apartments Izuki-senpai let us stay at after lunch hour.

I'll be seeing you then,
Suishoku

------------

Suishoku shut her eyes to take a deep breath before looking at her phone again to read the text she sent as the flakes melted to beads of dew. Pupils examining each character for any flaws in the text; the message being too forward or the choice of an outing with hot chocolate was too much of something Suishoku would do rather than apply to Yumiko's tastes. If it was the latter would the girl easily blame her family's habits influencing her social actions a bit too heavily. Relying heavily on sharing food and drink can't win everyone over after all in hospitality. Maybe I should have thought to ask for haiku. Or would that have been too typical for Yumiko? The worried student rubbed her cheek with the corner of her phone and continued to wait to see the results. At her side as a light sling was her usual school duffel bag, gutted for light weight travel and shopping.

Yumiko sat quietly watching the snow fall outside. Her room didn't have lights on, and the clouds outside made the small dorm room seem even more dim. She was feeling a bit better due to the holiday season in general, but today hadn't started well. The previous night she had a dream that her and Masumi had been in his room writing poetry together. As she finished up a line of a new haiku she turned to Masumi's bed to find his body blue and unresponsive. In her dream she screamed in terror, in real life she woke up and burst into tears once again. Her pillow becoming far too use to this by now.

As she had been laying in bed for a while after that a message came through on her phone from Yuubae Suishoku asking to meet. At first Yumiko turned the phone off and tried to go back to sleep, however the small girl didn't have it in her to be that rude. Turning her phone back on she responded briefly with
"Thank you for the invitation. I will meet you soon." it sounded like she was in better spirits than everyone knew she actually was. Until it was about time to go she had been sitting in her dimly lit room working on more poetry. Even her haiku seemed set in winter and fall, talking about cold and falling leaves.

-------
Now
-------

The snow feel around Southern Edo as Tagami Yumiko arrived. The girl's fine skin seeming as pale as the snow that feel around her. She had on a cute black hat, the sides of which seemed to slope up a bit into cat ears. Around her upper body was a soft black cape with two fuzzy red balls hanging down from the middle of the cape just above her chest. The rest of her outfit was fairly normal, blue jeans and some cute white and purple shoes. As her large eyes fell upon Suishoku she gave her senpai a polite bow.
"Good afternoon Senpai." she said in a far more subdued tone than Suishoku likely ever expected from the girl. It sounded more like someone who was half asleep rather than the mysterious poet's usual level of cheer. Unsure of what precisely Suishoku wished to talk about Yumiko stood close to her in the snow until she decided to either go inside the building or ask things of the small poet.

Suishoku started to kick some snow idly and pocket the phone. Soon, the poet girl replied. She tried to guesstimate how long it would take from the dorms to the station by minutes but found the human clause that Yumiko may not want to be in any hurry to arrive. Can't blame her. She huffed and sat down in a sheltered bench with her bag kept closely and huddled into her coat for warmth. Behind her could she hear the screeching wheels of the train brakes and the air pressure releasing. Passengers would shuffle around and for a few minutes would the station get a little noisy and a little crowded during the transit. More flakes started to fall again with the swirl of people passing by.

"Good afternoon Senpai." A small and near monotone voice would greet Suishoku. Her head looked around for a moment till standing up to find a rather pale and darkly dressed girl near her. "Yumiko!" The older student greeted in a quickly put together cheer. The girl wore so much black that she wondered if Yumiko's health would fair during winter in a still mourning stage. "Glad you can make it! You had lunch earlier?" From Suishoku's point of view did it look like Yumiko haven't tried taking care of herself a little. A diet of just drinks and tea isn't very filling so Suishoku made it a personal mission now to make sure Yumiko was well fed for today among other things.

Today, she hoped, was going to be a small outing to keeping spirits high. She motioned for Yumiko to join her to go back inside to take the train to Southern Edo proper. It'll be warmer than walking the whole way from this station. "Sorry this is all sudden," Suishoku began to explain to erase some mystery of this sudden call with some white lies sprinkled in. "I wanted to stay around Edo longer before leaving by New Years back to Kaga since I left sooner last year. Figured that spending it by myself wouldn't mean much for this season. I asked around a few people but didn't get much of a reply. I'm glad you answered back." She used her student ID pass to get back on the train and reserve a seat with Yumiko as the train would start up again for Southern Edo. It was the second brightest district next to central Edo and the Castle area.

Yumiko looked at her senpai a bit blank faced as she was given a warm welcome.
"Glad you can make it! You had lunch earlier?" Suishoku asked. Yumiko's head turned a bit to clearly show the girl was in thought. Then looking back at Suishoku she just shook her head a bit. Eating hadn't really been on her mind today. She had a few sweet potato crackers with a matcha coating but that was about it. Just as soon as Yumiko had arrived Suishoku seemed to motion for Yumiko to follow her. The two women seemed so different, like night and day due to moods and clothing.

I'm glad you answered back."[/b] With that now said the two quickly entered into a train heading towards Southern Edo. As the train doors closed and Yumiko stood inside the train she couldn't help but look at her senpai a bit confused about what was going on.

"Oh....Kaga." Yumiko said distantly and looked out the window towards Edo Castle. It hadn't even crossed her mind to go back home. Her parents had talked to her a few times and asked if she was coming but the thought left her mind as quickly as it had entered. Much like the smoke from the top of a candle that had just been put out. As Yumiko kept looking out the window it finally occurred to her to ask.
"What is in Southern Edo senpai?" the girl wasn't even talking in poetry today due to her low mood.

"Yeah, kinda far. Well, kinda." She continued to keep up some sort of idle chatter while watching for the announcement of their stop with her bag resting in her lap. The train car gradually filled up at each stop thanks to a lot of people being out and about at this time. Suishoku hoped the stops she had in mind would be helpful to Yumiko. Inside her bag, folded up in the side pockets for easier access, were a few flyers that were advertising some cute cafes and sweets. She wasn't sure if Yumiko had a huge sweet tooth in the first place but at least some of the tea shops had other options listed.

When asked what exactly was in Southern Edo, Suishoku turned to the girl and grinned. "Some new stuff. Central Edo sure is trendy and all but I heard that when it comes to this time of season, Southern Edo tends to rival the decorations with its own style. Even a few specialty items get to be sold here than any other time of the year." What exactly these things were was something even Suishoku wasn't very informed about. After skipping out last year would the area be very new to her. Based off of Yumiko's question did she surmise that even the poet girl hadn't ventured out that way. It would be a small experience for the both of them.

At their stop would they get up and disembark down a small tunnel of lights before entering the main shopping district. Already were they greeted with many strung up lights and decorations of snowflakes and round ball ornaments and stars hanging from nearly every store front venue. "Let's see if we can find something." She spoke with her head turned to keep an eye of the girl. Not a single verse of poetry left her so far and, with the winter clothes wrapped around them, Yumiko looked, felt muted. There should be somewhere that could soften her up a bit without being too loud. "I got it." Suishoku fished into her bag to find a bent up flyer with a couples coupon visible on it. "Let's grab some light lunch and drinks here."

The two girls would wander into the shopping district for a bit with a mini map on the flyer as their guide. Snow passing through in sparse light flakes started to fall by the time they arrived at a Dutch owned cafe. Suishoku made sure to Shepard Yumiko in first before following after through one door space to shake off any show before passing another to simple wooden lay out of tables and chairs. Oddly enough were a few pens with various rabbits housed within fenced sections as well as some along the wall. Suishoku took a seat by one of the pens as a curly haired barista lady in her 30s carrying towels approached them. "Weelcome tu Cafe Konijn. Menu, here. Call when ready for meal order." The woman would set the towels in the girl's laps and take the flyer out of Suishoku's hand for the coupon. "Special tea and hotcakes on way. Towels for lap." She spoke simply then left to get their meal set ready. An other of hot teas and a skillet cooked like a large fruit tart with fruit topped in its center with light cream and cinnamon in between coupled with a light salad sandwiches on the side.

Yumiko looked at the various advertisements on the train. While her parents had more classical tastes when it came to food Yumiko herself possessed quite the sweet tooth. She enjoyed mochi of various flavors, as well as sesame seed crackers. As the train came to a stop in Southern Edo Suishoku had made it sound as though the area would be vastly different from how it usually was for the rest of the year. Stepping out of the train Yumiko simply followed her senpai quietly. Passing briefly through a tunnel even Yumiko was amazed at the lights and sounds of the Southern Edo shopping district. Strung up lights and foreign decorations could be seen everywhere. They dangled between the buildings and lit up every inch of the plaza. The poet girl couldn't help but stop and look around for a moment at the awe inspiring sight before her. Her visual senses clearly on overload.

"Let's see if we can find something." Suishoku spoke, the words finally registering in Yumiko's brain as she nodded a bit, still looking at all of the decorations in awe. As Yumiko kept looking at the ornaments Suishoku suggested drinks and lunch. Yumiko's face didn't seem interested but a small growl from the tiny girl's stomach betrayed her ever muted intention. With her hunger clearly exposed the two walked until they settled at a very French seeming cafe tucked away in the center of the area. Inside Yumiko could see rabbits everywhere. Many of them didn't seem like breeds native to Japan.

Weelcome tu Cafe Konijn. Menu, here. Call when ready for meal order." a waitress said as she passed menus to the two of them. Yumiko bowed politely and kept looking around at the rabbits. Between the ornaments outside, still visible through the window, and the rabbits inside, Suishoku would see more of the Yumiko she was familiar with as opposed to the dull one that had met her at the train station. Yumiko placed the towel on her lap, not yet getting a rabbit as the tea and hot cakes came. Still sitting she gave a polite bow to Suishoku.
"Thank you Senpai." she said before raising her head back up and sipping the tea a bit. Even though the food had arrived and she clearly seemed hungry she hadn't grabbed at it yet. In many ways she still felt, off.

Setting the towel on her lap, Suishoku nodded to the woman and took up the sample tea. The sandwiches were almost complimentary along with the skillet hot cake with sugar and fruit upon it. The curly haired woman returned to reach into the pens and sit with the girls while waiting for an order.

"These are free to pet. The towel in your laps is for clean sake of customers. All rabbits in store are free for petting. They love petting." She explain and set a dutch rabbit, a black and white one, in Suishoku's lap and went to get another for Yumiko.

"Oh good, they don't bite," Suishoku spoke in relief. At home her mother owned a pet ferret that liked to bite very often which made it rather unfriendly for her to play with and accosted all small animals to be this way. She stroked the rabbit from its ears down to its back as the server returned to something that looked more giant grey puff ball than rabbit. The woman knelt down to Yumiko and gently offed it to the girl's lap.

"Thanks for the lunch special. Can we keep the menus for now and work through our tea and hot cake tart." Suishoku explained to the woman who nodded but awaited for anything Yumiko needed before leading to the cafe counter. Already their table was full of tea, little sandwiches, and even a skillet pancake tart of sorts the girls could share. Already Suishoku helped herself to a cucumber, lettuce, and egg salad sandwich while running her fingers through the rabbit's calming soft fur in her lap. Within the cafe was a peace and warmth to gradually soak in after walking through the assault of bright decorations and festival lights outside.

Yumiko blinked a bit as the woman explained how the cafe worked. As Suishoku was handed a rabbit Yumiko looked at it a bit, unsure if she really wanted something that close to her. However this quickly changed when Yumiko saw the rabbit that had been brought over to her. The rabbit didn't appear to be a rabbit as much as a giant blob of pure fur. Looking at it Yumiko blinked at the woman a bit.
"What is this?" as she took the rabbit gladly into her arms. Out of the giant ball of fur a tiny nose came out to sniff at Yumiko.
"It is an angora rabbit. They are known for rapid fur growth." she explained. Sitting down Yumiko kept running her hands through the rabbit's fur. She had never even seen something as fuzzy as the rabbit before. As the rabbit looked up at her Yumiko just smiled. As Yumiko kept petting the rabbit she finally looked up and blinked. She remembered the rest of the world existed.

"Um, I'm fine with this. Thank you." she said politely to the waitress so that she could go back to her job. Then Yumiko did something she didn't even expect. As she looked straight down at the rabbit she began to cry a bit. She had carried so much stress in her heart since the fall. Unlike when she had cried about Masumi this time Yumiko wasn't crying out of sadness. She was crying because for the first time in months this was the most relaxed Yumiko had actually been. As she cried a bit the rabbit put it's paws on her, reached up, and nibbled the small girl's nose a bit which forced a smile from her. Taking a napkin from the table she looked up at Suishoku.
"I-I'm sorry Senpai. I think I have a rabbit allergy." she suggested.

Currently Yumiko was running her fingers through the rabbit's fur and kept petting it, absolutely taken back by the purely innocent and cute creature in her lap.

Suishoku rubbed at the black dutch's paws, letting things slow down to the comforts of this rabbit cafe. The scenery started to take her in as well from the anxiety of the last half of the year. If there were beds in this cafe then she would have laid down in shelter of what happened than going home. No more stress, no Elite things to worry over, no crazy monks to ruin it all; all of that just far away. She ate up the last of her first sandwich and checked to see how Yumiko is. The girl kept so quiet as well this whole time but instead of a dower girl, Suishoku saw a teary eyed but cute Yumiko across the table.

"I'm sure the rabbit won't mind," she replied at the obvious lie with a smile of her own. Yumiko's tears started to get her eyes to water as well. From the tray did she took a napkin and handed one of the small sandwiches to her side before taking her own. Taking interest in the food, the Dutch rabbit raised its head to sniff the offered veggie sandwich to start nibbling away at it. Suishoku fed the little black and white rabbit and drank some tea. All doong this with one hand as the other kept stroking the cotton soft fur.

With neither of them ordering much more, their order of sandwiches, tea, and the hot cake with their rabbits may have been all the girls would need. "You like that lil guy?" Suishoku asked the Dutch while caressing its ears and down to its tail. The rabbit eating away and loving its pampered life while the angora kept curious of the girl who rained water from her eyes.

"I'm sure the rabbit won't mind," Suishoku said. The words echoed through Yumiko's heart as she kept petting the giant ball of fur on her lap and smiling a bit. She wanted to ask Suishoku a lot since she was one of the students who had been with Masumi when he died, but she wasn't even sure what to ask or how to start. Finally deciding to eat she took a bit of the sandwhich on the table and nibbled a bit of it, looking very similar herself to a rabbit. Meanwhile the rabbit on her lap just sat content. It was clearly a large, lazy bunny use to simply being pet and sleeping.

"Senpai. If it is alright to ask.....Kajiwara-san....." she tried to ask but stopped herself, biting her lip a little and trying to figure out the right way to ask.
"He didn't suffer....did he?" and with that she looked down completely. She hid her eyes and looked directly at the small ball of fur on her lap. She knew Masumi died, she knew he died in battle, but With Kai being badly hurt, the Tokugawa boys being busy, and her not knowing Kurome very well she had no one to ask except Suishoku.

"I.....i'd like to know how he died." she said in a soft, but surprisingly serious sounding tone. She hadn't been able to go to Masumi's funeral since it had been back home in Kyushu, and so she never even got to see his body. At night she kept having nightmares of Masumi being violently torn to pieces by the Ikko extremists. As she waited for Suishoku to answer, she braced herself. She knew whatever the answer was it would hurt. She just hoped it wasn't something sadistic as in her dreams. Masumi may have been strong, but he was always sick, and Yumiko could only imagine what had happened to him. Even the rabbit in her lap sensed Yumiko's sudden change in tone and mood and lifted it's head up a bit to nibble the tip of her nose.

The rabbit ate away at his snack with the tea smoothly washing down the bites Suishoku ate. She began to think maybe small animals weren't so bad after all and that the one at home could just be a singular evil in her world. No music played within the cafe beyond a passing hand bell ring from outside muffled by the doors. They would hardly notice the woman running the counter heading to the back to chat on the phone during slow business hours as the outside world cluttered with shoppers. In the quiet gentle clacks and shuffling of tea ware and napkins did Yumiko opened herself speak of Masumi on her own.

The change in pace, something she anticipated would happen, had Suishoku get more hot tea poured for the both of them and kept her food indulgence down to a minimum. 'Did the man suffer?' The first of opening up the topic. Suishoku wasn't there for autopsy when the man was loaded into the Tokugawa's family car but adrenaline kept his body the way it was. Stressed and fighting outside and within. Yumiko wanted to know how he died rather than what killed him. Suishoku had a good guess of what did finish him but answering how would do.

"He died standing. His last actions were providing excellent defensive support and saving that man from a monk armed with black powder. It was not realized till after the fighting ended was his passing discovered as neither him nor myself suffered physical harm." Suishoku answered after spending months trying to accept and process how this event came to be. She stopped to allow Yumiko a moment to take this in and ask for any further details or let the news wash over her again as a returning wave.

As Suishoku spoke Yumiko listened carefully. In her head she imagined Masumi fighting. It was hard for her to imagine Masumi directly in combat. She was use to the serious but sickly man who usually spent his time resting in bed looking over documents for the school, or closing his eyes and looking at the city through his bird summon. Yet when she had seen him that morning, and before they parted ways, Masumi looked serious and combat ready. He had even made sure that Yumiko wasn't with him. Had he really been expecting a fight to happen that day?

She wondered beyond that, if he had expected to die. Looking down at the ball of fur in her lap for a minute she shook her head a bit. It was impossible. Not even Masumi would simply expect to die without saying goodbye to her, or to his parents and friends back home in Kyushu. The more Yumiko thought about it the more she focused on Suishoku's words about how neither of them had taken physical damage. It meant that Masumi's own illness must have been worse than he told anyone. As a small tear rolled down her cheek Yumiko smiled a bit. It was like him, so much so. During the earthquake he had pushed himself so hard he had collapsed next to her. Even during the fall, when he easily could have been excused for being ill, he chose to continue fighting.

"He must have really resented, how sick he had gotten. To chose to fight, even being that sick." she said softly while hugging her rabbit. Petting it a bit more she looked up at Suishoku.
"I miss him. Every day." she said honestly. It was the first time she had really told anyone. It felt surprisingly good to get it off her chest. After saying that she finally grabbed a small sandwich and nibbled on it.

Suishoku thought she worded it as well to the truth as possible. Neither of them were overtly harmed besides reeking of smoke so she hoped Yumiko caught on that the man did not die from being mutilated or anything. Her body tensed while thinking back to how she discovered Masumi had died. He took every measure as possible to push his body to the very limits but when taking a step back, it was a mere wonder anyone performed the way they did after that long march. If the mission failed, if everyone died, if the Shogun were to die, it would have been all his fault for making the ceremony more important than the lives of those who escorted him. The Dutch rabbit in her lap thumped its kind legs on her lap to bring attention back. She had stopped petting him once her mind went toward the blaming aspects.

"Sorry,"
she whispered to the rabbit and resumed petting him to satisfy his royal demands of petting as she looked to Yumiko for clues on how to proceed this. Suishoku still worried that if she said something too wrong would the girl just break down and, well, break. She watched her take up the ball of angora fur and held it like a pillow. From how the fur was, you couldn't tell there was even a rabbit face there.

"He must have really resented, how sick he had gotten. To chose to fight, even being that sick."

"I believe so. He likely didn't want to be remembered as being sickly," Suishoku answered softly with fingers scratching the spot between the Dutch's ears. Masumi did somehow got his hands on the extra liquid bags she made during the earthquake. She wasn't sure of how long he had been holding them but she could sense the lingering traces of her relic's power throughout his body to serve as some sort of dam before his organs finally gave in.

Upon the next words out of Yumiko's mouth, the girl nodded in agreement. It was obvious how Yumiko missed him. Even better now that Suishoku finally witnessed the girl eating something. She made sure to hold back to let the girl eat her fill. Her hands moved off the rabbit's back briefly to take a fork and knife to cut away a small bit of the sugary hot cake in the middle. It was warm by now thanks to the skillet keeping it heated this whole time.

"Say,"
she began before taking a bite out of a caramelized apple slice. "it has been awhile, since spring I mean. Whatever became of the souvenir you got him earlier this year?" Suishoku wondered, feeling it was now okay to may ask about things more slowly related of the two in order to keep her own self away from Masumi's death by stress and complications. With Masumi dead, Suishoku wondered of whatever happened to his personal possessions from his room. Were they quarantined cause he was sick? Given to his family? Where was his family anyway? And Yumiko's? The questions started to bubble up inside her that she had to bite down on her fork to hold herself back more.

"I believe so. He likely didn't want to be remembered as being sickly," The words would have made others sad, but it was somehow calming to Yumiko. As the two girls talked and looked at the rabbits the thoughts of the good times she had with Masumi began coming to mind instead of just the constant thoughts of his death, and how sickly he always was. In a lot of ways it was true that he would have never wanted Yumiko to remember him like that.

As they ate a bit more Suishoku suddenly asked Yumiko about the gift she had brought Masumi back in the spring. Yumiko smiled and got a bit teary eyed again remembering Masumi's summon greeting them at the school gate and politely bowing to welcome them back to the school grounds. It had been the first time Yumiko had really gotten to learn about Suishoku, and about her rumored boyfriend Nobuyori as well.
"He smiled when I gave it to him. He said that birds made him really happy since they could fly anywhere, and he always wished that his relic would have given him wings instead of just a bird summon." she said as she gave a sad laugh. She always thought it was strange how much he talked about wanting to fly.

"He often talked about how you could only see certain things from the sky, and that was probably why so many students hung out on the school roof at lunch." she said as she twirled a small spoon between her fingers, a fond smile on her face.
"The school let me look in his room, one last time. Ever since spring, he had put the bird on the dresser right next to his bed. I think he really loved it."

"He really liked it that much, huh. Glad your gift worked out so well." She observed, since most people would keep items they like very near and dear to their persons. There was a passing thought if the man liked birds in general to have a hobby to go bird watching on his own but the way Yumiko described it had her confused while her hand scratched under the chin of the Dutch to keep it pleased.

"Wings would be pretty neat. Or summon a giant bird to ride on but I guess if he wanted to do that, he would have done so." The idea of the sick liking birds cause they can fly anywhere almost seemed cliche but Suishoku began to wonder why that was the case. There couldn't be a real answer to this since he's now dead but at least the man didn't leave this world in a feeling of contempt. Did he simply wanted to fly away? Feel more alive and moving that his body couldn't allow? Trapped by what his body had become? If the cause of this was the relic, Masumi may have been far gone ill that even if he were to renounce his status as a Scion that his organs would be years beyond repair.

"Yeah," Suishoku quickly agreed to show she wasn't too lost in her pondering. "The roof is pretty relaxing with a great view of the Edo skyline. It's kinda its own informal meeting place in a way so you're up to showing up as well when the weather is good. It is there for everyone and all that." The girl across from her twirled the spoon skillfully in recollection of her time with Masumi. Suishoku hoped she could keep Yumiko this happy for awhile longer. Even hearing that the bird gift was so well taken care of had her smiling in relief that the thing even survived the earthquake at all! Masumi must have made sure to keep that item safe since the dorms caught on fire.

"I am glad the school did let you to. Did they even allow you to take anything at all before it was shipped to his family or something?" The school had be oddly generous with how they handled student deaths now that she heard it from Yumiko's perspective. It's likely only those closest to the person would get these opportunities.

Their meal slowly disappeared and before Suishoku knew it, the Dutch in her lap had taken upon itself to have a little nap there. It was odd to have an animal feel that comfortable with her but it was a good change. Maybe even a sign that this meeting would go a lot better than how she worried over.
