Awakening had hurt, in many ways. She had been a victim of the earthquake that shook all of Edo, and nearly crushed to death. It was almost a certainty to her that - before she blacked out, caught between two floors of Edo Bugei - one of her friends had attempted to shield her...thus taking the more more lethal crushing force...while she herself had still been battered and beaten with the school on top of her. She had been thrown into a coma and temporarily pronounced dead when pulled out with a number of other corpses.

Makoto Shiyo was pronounced dead, but fortunately somebody corrected this oversight.

She remembered nothing but the earthquake and the dreams of Maeda Toshiie's brutal battles, fought with the very weapon that was beside her now. Yes, this Yari was hers, and she was now forever-linked with the Maeda Clan, as her parents had weirdly hoped. Her parents... They were gone now. The earthquake DID claim them. The whole birthmark thing was a longshot, but the clan had honored it, and now she had claimed Scion-hood to a brutal manslayer. This didn't make her unhappy. It actually meant she had something. Imagine what her life would be if this had not taken place, and that she and her brother Kenji were left out in the streets, instead.

It wasn't at all fair, but at least it was something.

It had to be, because Makoto was otherwise devastated. Her parents had died and she was alive, Kenji needed to be taken care of, her mind had been plagued with war and disaster, and her entire body hurt. Most of the damage had healed while she was in the coma, but the soreness would remain for some time. She still had bandages around the arms and legs, a patch on her forehead, and also around the waist. Physical therapy had gotten her onto her feet, and she was allowed her own clothes instead of a hospital gown, but...it was still like she'd had a sprain in several places. It hurt, and she got headaches, and it was really making her impatient to get out. It should be any day now, but she wanted to leave sooner than later.

Of course, she could understand the delay for today. A war had broken out.

This did nothing for the emotional wreck that was her mind, of course, because she - a now-capable Scion - was sitting in a hospital when there was a calamity outside. There were fires and explosions, and Ikko Monks as well, if the emergency announcement was to be believed. Well, a look out the window certainly confirmed that there were soldiers guarding the hospital. Now, Makoto herself wasn't in a big hospital. In the aftermath of the earthquake, there was alot of overflow, and a girl in a coma needed only be stabilized and sustained. Any hospital can do that. The going-to-die-soon people took priority. From the window, though, she could see Edo burning, and it burned her to see it all happening.

Damn it all, I should be out there, doing something! I have the training and the power I need! I'm only waiting for release!

She looked down and saw the guards really struggling with the monks. Twice now, she'd seen them have to pull back from the perimeter to the hospital proper to keep the interlopers from breaking in. They were good, but at this rate... Her anger suddenly peaked and she turned away from the window, stepping over to her weapon. Bunkatsu Kami Yari... A Bishamon-style spear previously enjoyed by Maeda Toshiie. Grabbing it, Makoto exited her room on the third floor and got moving. She couldn't run without making her muscles scream, and every serious movement was going to ache, but what the hell? People were dying out there. On her way to the ground floor, one of the staff who'd been looking after her started to raise some very loud objections, and she had almost no tolerance for it right now.

"I'm not just sitting around anymore! I can't go home, so I'm fighting here!"

Good god, the look she gave that nurse made her regret leaving that Yari with her. Makoto made it outside and immediately noticed something, as she herself was immediately noticed by the soldiers at the main door. She could see a couple of others in view, taking out an Ikko Monk, but they were spread thin...and she could see no obvious Scions.

"Stay in the hospital! It isn't safe out here!"

"Where are the Scions? Why don't you have enough soldiers?"

"The entire city is swarming with Ikko Monks and traitors working alongside. We've had to ration our numbers, operate at the minimum in places, or less. No Scions were available for this location."

"There is now."

He looked her over.

"I'm pretty sure I can stop you, but I don't have time. I take it you were watching from inside?"

"Yes."

"Fine. You will hold this entrance, and only this entrance. An injured Scion is only half as useful, but at least we can fill in some gaps."

Well...he'd be kind of wrong about that. Her injuries were going to be an issue, but they were also going to be a boon... She was just starting out here, but she had power, something they didn't have. So, they moved out and Makoto stood her ground, some feet in front of the entrance. The soldiers were going to take the most, and she was their back-up in this area of the hospital. Now, there hadn't been a coordinated assault on this hospital yet. Mostly attackers at varying times, but once enough of them spotted this new setup, they were made to believe the other points of entry were going to be stronger, and this one weaker. So saying, an Ikko Monk assault group made for the front gates, some of them clashing with the guards and some of them running right past!

"For Ikko!!"

So, they had a lone target that looked like they'd recruited her because they were hurting for numbers - which was technically true - but the monks thought it was just someone they found who could use a spear, maybe not even well. That would be...wrong. Makoto slashed horizontally in a wide arc to make them re-think their charge and caught one who was unable to stop fast enough. He cried out, blood pouring from the wound, grasping it in pain because...it seemed like a shallower cut at first, but it'd gotten worse all of a sudden! She knew why. They could feel her pain. She was a recovering patient, and her weapon delivered more pain and physical damage when she was injured.

But why stop there?

While he was grasping it, she kicked him in the same spot before sweeping low at one of the others that'd been getting too close. Now, they were armed with all kinds of things, but none of them had long-reaching weapons, like hers. Swords, knives, tekko-kagi - on-the-go stuff, not heavy equipment. True, though, her weapon was heavy and that meant she had to dodge and attack, or bring up the blunt end of her weapon to defend, but she'd been trained for this. Well, sort of... She'd been trained in pole-arms and other weapons, of course, but her preferred training had been with a pair of tonfas. Why? Well, that one came out as she was dealing with the third monk while the first one (trying to staunch bleeding) and the second one (staggered from leg wounds) were otherwise occupied. Two more had come through as the soldiers were hit with another assault group, though not as successful as the last one.

"Hey, help me out here!"

"For this? No problem."

He got around with his friend to her back, while his friend clashed with her, using his sword. As soon as he moved, though, a...pole-arm?...came and embedded itself into his hip before he was in proper sword range. He had...no idea...how that even... Why are there two of them...? Two weapons. Half...? Was it half that just...? He collapsed, and the others were taking stock here. There was this brown-haired teen with a look of murder on her face, and each hand was holding a lighter weapon that was two halves of the same whole. And then, the two blades lit up on fire!

"Now you die, you piles of shit!"

Ah hell... That was a Scion! The now-staunched monk threw himself right at her, shouting, in order to take her attack for the others. Since he actually impaled himself on one spear and the others backed away, she quickly used the other to shove him off before they could gang up on her and the fire attack expired. Staggered boy was no longer staggered as he clashed with her weapons, but unfortunately for him...she had the leverage now. Try to imagine you're fighting someone with a giant pair of pliers, at this point. Makoto had more to work with than just that, but it also means that when he was kicked down below and she spun him, he had little to bring to the party as she threw him into a roll just in time to parry one of the others and stab the last one in the gut, before pulling away suddenly.

Might have to use the bigger one here. Could be more any time now.

So, she went back to the alcove entrance...and looked like her legs were about to give out. They hurt, but she was exaggerating. She also put her Yari back together and assumed a defensive posture. The two that were still standing looked at this, then at each other, and decided to pick up the one who'd just taken a stab. He protested, but they up and threw 'im right into Makoto's spear before moving to attack! That...was pretty clever, but it would not work. She pulled out and there was suddenly a blazing fire coming off of the weapon as she spun and slashed at them both explosively! It was 'the bigger one', a blast-strike indicated by the meter-long flame that shot off of the blade during the attack. Now, the Monks here were pretty much dead, but now the soldiers were shouting something, pointing at her? No, behind her. She turned and...

"Oh shit! fire!"

The alcove was on fire! Fire extinguisher! Where the hell was the extinguisher?!

Hey! Gimme that woman! Give her to me and you get to die quickly...

This is the way it should be, killing each other while everything burns to the ground! Isn't it glorious?!

For Ikko!!

It was late. Sleep wasn't coming easily for Roshi Bento. In his room at home, sheets were a'tangled and pillows were being wrestled with, as per his latest bout with his own subconscious. Put simply, he was dreaming the worst dreams, his mind on replay over the most-recent trials of his life. Before now, he had strange dreams and only the occasional bizarre nightmare. Of late, however, it had been dread flashbacks of his first real combat experience.

Toya The Spider, Koga Ninjas, deadly traps, burning buildings, Ikko Monks, blood all over the place, and that foreign general known as Jack in the middle. All of these were his guests and more, though none of them were welcome. These things had been plaguing him since that time, and they would not go away. In the dark, Roshi awoke - as he often did when his mind went "NO MORE!" - his eyes open to the darkness with his face mostly engulfed in pillow.

He started groaning into that pillow. He couldn't take much more of this. They taught you how to fight in Bugei, but he wasn't a made-of-steel guy like Kai or Nobu. They were obviously use to the fighting. He wasn't. He put on a brave front, and did what he could to help them. For a guy who had never seen combat before then, it was admirable. He knew this, but...none of it made him feel any better, nor did it tell him how to make the nightmares go away.

He sat up and looked around the room in the dark. Drawings, statuettes, designs, and other things were about the room, which was a bit of a mess. The things were new in this room. First, his wooden staff had been joined by a metal staff, tekko-kagi, and kunai. He wasn't just a guy who defended himself anymore. He'd been thrust into the world of fighters, because he himself had fought. He had real weapons...and he'd really killed people with them.

The second thing was the big hat currently on the tall hat-rack. It was Jack's. Roshi hadn't known why he took it at the time, apart from it being a big silly floppy hat. Later on, though, he realized why he did that: To prove that the man was dead, that it wasn't one of his illusions. He was gone forever. Well...almost gone. There was still one more battlefield for Jack and Toya and the Ikko Monks: Roshi's own head.

"I can't take much more of this..."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

A while later, he was coming upon a place where he thought maybe someone could give him a hand. He'd thought about talking to Nobu about it, or Kai, or Kurome. With Kai and Kurome, he was getting along with nicely. Nobu seemed very level-headed. But...he didn't exactly know them as well as he should. It might've seemed strange, but he found himself outside the school dorms at this late hour because he thought that she would be better at it.

Suishoku knew the Roshi we all know and love better than the one that went to war. Right now, the young artist was at odds at the young man who'd gone and fought for the country, recently. Right now, he needed not an acquaintance - no matter how good that acquaintance was - but rather...a friend. He needed a friend who had probably been through combat, as he had, and shared some moments - good and bad - with him. That was why he wanted it to be her.

She might've been the first good friend he'd had since the earthquake.

So, he was below the window that he was pretty sure was the right one for her dorm room. Why was he here? The old chuck-the-stone-at-the-window routine! Except, first...he had some leftover dominoes, and second...they weren't reaching high enough. He tried, but he kept missing. Alright then. Plan B. Roshi took out his cellphone and began to text her, hoping that she was in an...understanding enough mood for this. It said...

-Suishoku-san, I need to talk to someone, face to face. Can you sneak out and meet me on the school grounds?-

If she did, she would find that he was not hard to spot. The moon was bright enough and his attire was a bit unusual. At times, Roshi liked to relax in a monk-like robe, pants and no shirt, with sandals on, if not barefoot. He was like that now, but...he was seated on an outside bench, legs rucked up to his chin and holding them, staring either into his knees or just...ahead.

A layman could easily tell that something was wrong. Someone who actually knew the guy knew that he was in a really bad way.
STYLE: Makoto does wear glasses, which are oval-shaped. She is commonly seen with a blue long-sleeved blazer over a white shirt, sometimes a tie if feeling formal enough. She wears a skirt and has black knee-high boots, suitable for hiking and riding. Also, black leather fingerless gloves.
OTHER: 'Fraid so. On her back, the outside of her arms, her legs, and her stomach, there is a series of small scars consistant with having been injured by rubble in a building collapse. Also, below her left shoulder-blade, very small, is a birthmark in the shape of the Maeda Clan symbol.

TRAITS

She use to be such a nice girl. And deep inside of her, perhaps some of that still exists, but after the recent earthquake, it would be fair to say that Makoto Shiyo has undergone a transformation of personality. Where there was a calmer and more carefree student, there is now fire, pain, and loss. She has less patience people, especially if she's sure they're full of crap or not in touch with reality. Life got extremely real for her, and she sees herself as no longer having the luxury of letting the pieces fall where they may. In her experience, she already knows that things will fall to ruin if they are not addressed, preferrably in a most expedient manner. This has thus put a new intensity that the old Makoto is at odds with, to the point where she could even be frustrated with herself. It's left her a little obsessive for details, yet sometimes overlooking something obvious because she believes she has to do something with her life now...or lose the chance to forever.

STRENGTHS: Perceptive (Not easily taken by surprise and often noting subtle details), Fierce (Willful and dangerously driven in combat situations), Enduring (No stranger to pain and thus it is less distracting).
WEAKNESSES: Impatient (In a stressful situation, she'd rather take the direct approach), Blood Knight (She will go brutal on people and nevermind the consequences, sometimes), Crushed Innocence (Mentally and physically, she's been harmed in a way you can't take back).
LIKES: There could be a number of things, including a certain love of both art and cats. As of now, though, she likes people who can hold themselves together in the face of adversity.
DISLIKES: Anyone who would take lightly the tragic hardships of others, and of herself. Also, critics and people who are cruel to animals.
AMBITIONS: Her only ambition is to make as much as humanly possible of herself...because there is barely anything else left.
FEARS: She's become somewhat Claustrophobic and Seismophobic.

WEAPON: A pair of tonfas, meant to help in her defense and in her dual-wielding technique. However, after her change, she has become more ruthless in attack, finding and tearing through weaknesses in an effort to bring ruin to her opponents. She is a polearm expert, but the reason she is so-training with two similar weapons in hand is due to the following...
RELIC: Bunkatsu Kami Yari (Dividing God Spear) - It is a Bishamon Yari (a long-bladed spear with two crescent blades on either side) which may be pulled apart into a pair of equal halves of the same whole. During such a time, each half is a lighter weapon of equal weight. Thus, she can attack twice as many times as when they are one, though those strikes will be half as strong. The versatility of her attack and defense on either side, or front and back, is therefore increased. (Similar rules apply in the use of special moves. The number of attacks involved within a special power's description can be doubled, but slightly weakened, per hit.) When the two halves are joined, it appears seamless and without any sign of a break. Curious...
RELIC OWNER: Maeda Toshiie
OWNER HISTORY:
He was OF the Maeda Clan, of course - the fourth son in his generation - but he was not merely known for that. He was friends with none other than Oda Nobunaga, starting when he was a mere page and throughout his life as he rose through the ranks. As a fierce and brutal warrior, many found his harsh actions and impetuous nature to be too much, asking for his exile or execution. However, though he did in fact displease Nobunaga enough to be dismissed from his service, his expertise and loyalty brought him back into good standing later. Toshiie had been named head of the Maeda Clan by Oda himself, passing over his elder brothers, and was given fiefs in provinces for his work. He was famously known as 'Yari no Mataza' or 'Matazaemon' for his preference for the yari spear, and was secretly deified upon his death.
ACTIVATED ABILITY 1: Akuma Kaen Sutoraiku (Demon Flame Strike) - The head of Makoto's weapon is cast in flame, alight and conducting heat. The attack grants her a greater chance of burning through armor and igniting flammables on the target. Naturally, a strike on a person's body would have the effect of having been stabbed or slashed and burned at the same time by a freshly-forged blade. The actual flame does not extend far from the blade, but you can still feel the heat at a near-miss. (One turn cooldown.)
ACTIVATED ABILITY 2: Kaen Funshutsu Nensho Sutoraiku (Flame-Spewing Combustion Strike) - This is characterized by the head of her yari suddenly giving off a stream of fire that extends about a meter from the blade in the direction of its point. It is a fire hazard, just to activate, and the effect it has on targets itself is a yikes. This attack focuses an explosive blast that moves with the flow of the stab or slash. Recipients of a stab would feel the force of a shaped incendiary charge going off against their body, which could rupture things and set them on fire. The target of a slash could take a more brief explosive burst along with the burning cut, but it is possible to give secondary blast damage to nearby targets capable of being hit by that slash. Thus, it is useful when fighting a group, as well. (Three turn cooldown.)
LOCKED ACTIVATED ABILITY 3: Jinsoku Bakuhatsu Kaen Uzu (Swift Bursting Flame Vortex) - Makoto's weapon is now charged with progressively-stronger attacks. Eight of them, to be precise. They start out at the level of her second active ability, but ramps up in force until the final strike is an actual fiery blast wave. Anybody nearby the target risks getting caught in the wake of their attack or set on fire just by being nearby. It is called a vortex because she prefers to move in a spiral against multiple opponents, but spins rapidly when using it all against a singular foe, creating a fiery tornado of DOOM! (Five turn cooldown.)
PASSIVE 1: Nensho Jonetsu (Burning Passion) - Harming Makoto may cause injury, but the more damage you do, the more damage she will INFLICT.
LOCKED PASSIVE 2: Ikari no Ba (Field of Fury) - You will actually feel Makoto's anger in the form of an oppressive, draining heat wave that reduces battle effectiveness in opponents. It's like you're in the middle of summer in the middle of the day in the middle of a parking lot...in Arizona!
LOCKED AWAKENED MODE COLOR: Bright Orange Flame
LOCKED
AWAKENED ATTACK: Senso Kami Kohai Burasuto (War God Devastation Blast) - It IS an explosion, either a 20-meter blast in all directions or a 50-meter (city block length) corridor of destruction. It really all depends on where she strikes her yari. If she plunges it into the ground, it's going all over the place. If she strikes or slashes at someone or something specifically, it's traveling through that spot and beyond. This is for when something, or ALOT of somethings, really needs to be demolished completely. A building WILL be blasted away from her if she's on the inside, due to the sheer force. Makoto remains safe IN the blast, of course. The issue lies with everything AROUND her...

HISTORY

FAMILY:
• Shiyo, Ryoga - Strong and pragmatic father, tradesman and retainer to the Maeda Clan, Deceased
• Shiyo, Haruna - Well-educated and doting mother, home tutor, Deceased
• Shiyo, Kenji - Quiet and study-prone kid brother, also wears glasses, highly-driven to become Bugei teacher, highly-affected by the death of his parents, and a worrier in regards to his older sister...who seems like 'a scary broken demon child' to him. It's a case of caring about her, but also being kind of afraid of her, and it bothers him that he can't resolve this in his head.

BACKGROUND:

This was never the way it was suppose to happen. What we have is what you could call a rude awakening. The Shiyos were not originally important in any way, not before, but things changed at the birth of their first child. The two of them had been born in different cities, both accustomed to travel in their respective careers. However, they eventually decided to settle down in Edo, the happening place to be in Japan. It was there that Makoto was born...and then looked upon in shock. She had a surprising birthmark, which was important when you consider the possibility of being born a Scion, because it appeared to be...of the Maeda Clan. It may have been nothing. It may have been everything. You don't ignore such things. Ryoga sent word to the clan in Kaga, requesting that an examiner come in to meet with them and a similar expert from Edo Bugei. If this meant something, it was important for it to be recognized and treated accordingly. It was indeed a Maeda symbol and there was every possibility that she was a Scion. For the time being, the family was placed in retainer so that the child may be raised to serve the Maeda Clan, until such time as she awakened. With or without it, though, this moved the family up in life, and to Suginami. Makoto's future was ensured...for a time.

Even if she hadn't awakened yet, Makoto was destined for the Bugei thanks to the retainer. Because she was an understanding child, she followed with her parents' wishes for their sake, and that of her new baby brother, Kenji. With her dedication, he would have a greater chance at success in life, as well. Thus, while in her youth she had all of the passions of a girl who enjoyed life, she always set time aside for her practices. By the time she hit the proper age to attend the Bugei, she could be considered decent. Now, every year since her brother was born, they had taken her to the Relic chamber to see if she resonated with any of the weapons, especially those said to belong to famous Maeda clan members. No apparent results, as of that time, so she continued her training in infantry and cavelry, and getting interested in a little creative outlet via the Art Club. She made good friends there, taking away all the seriousness for a while. It was where she even befriended a curious boy really into art and performance, Roshi Bento. He was surprisingly entertaining and really, really good at creative works. It seemed like that was all he DID do. When she asked things about him, though, he clammed up. He didn't want to talk about home or family or whatnot, so she let their common ground be the art.

Everything changed when the Great Kanto Earthquake struck. They were in the Art Club room when it happened. Makoto led people out and towards the school entrance, but...they didn't make it. Everything collapsed upon them - One of her friends might've saved her with his own body - and they were being compressed by the floors above. All Makoto remembered after that was pain and blood and bodies and screaming. The last one was from her, of course, and then she blacked out. Clean-up took days in order to sort anything out. However, among other bodies... At first, she was thought to be dead. She was badly injured and unresponsive, it seemed. But then, a more careful examination had revealed that Makoto was alive. No official report had been made as she was put into the hospital, in a coma, because unfortunately...her family HAD died, save for Kenji, who was now ten years old and in a state of shock. He recovered from that before Makoto died, though her own injuries had come to heal. He visited often, trying to coax her out of her coma, but what they didn't know was that her near-death experience had awakened her to the blood fury of a battleborn warrior, Maeda Toshiie! She was reliving old battles and the trauma of the earthquake in her head!

Her still being alive had been tragically overlooked, though Kenji had the good sense to inform the Maeda Clan that there was at least a chance she would awaken. Boy were THEY in for a surprise. One night, during a thunderstorm, the building shook...and Makoto was hella-triggered. She awoke screaming, from equal amounts of fear, rage, and pain. Fear, because she'd been nearly crushed to death. Rage, because Maeda Toshiie had actively ridden around in her head, in her dreams. And pain, because...yeah, she was in a hospital, remember? She got out of bed, actually knocked out the nurse that came in, stumbled out of the room, found a phone, and began furiously dealing home to try and reach her parents. She didn't know that home was gone, her parents had died, and that Kenji had been moved during the rebuild. She had to be forcibly restrained until they could calm her down and explain things...which all but killed her in spirit. They let her grieve for a while in her room, where she was quiet for a long time. Finally, Makoto told the doctors what she had seen in her dreams. A representative from the Bugei came, bearing a weapon that Toshiie may have once handled. She felt it, clear as day. She was a Scion. And now, she had to somehow clean up her life.

Lately, I've been watching a number of martial arts movies. Among them are movies performed by a group that began to be identified with their first movie as "The Five Venoms". These are Chinese kung fu movies, pretty brutal-looking (or at least for the time) and rather entertaining.

The reason I bring this up is because during a conversation with Suishoku, Roshi Bento - who has created art and performed live - has had the idea of creating a 'Fighting Dramedy'. To explain, you already know the idea behind Japanese artistic drama. It can take many forms and executions, including mock-battles that are choreographed for entertainment purposes. This is a fighting drama-comedy, made to look serious and even act serious, but be wholey-recognized as a satire because of a ridiculous concept.

The general idea is that it's suppose to be some sort of conflict between people for whom the Art of War is the War of Art, where fighting grandiosely and impressively is far more important than doing physical harm to your opponent...and yet that person will reel from the blow as IF harmed. If anyone here has ever seen Yakitate Japan, where all the conflicts and battles revolve around the creation of bread, it's about as ridiculous as that.

I want to create a story of this. I want to have a story of creating the story - the act of gathering the performers, figuring out the script, practice/performance follies, impacts on personal lives, etc. - so that the actual performance becomes a big meaningful event in the characters' lives. Lemme know your thoughts, what characters you think might be up for this, and so on.

Thus, they were gathered,
For the act of artist's wrath,
Fear the Master Stroke.
