Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 7/10/2017 A blood red summer has come. As the Edo Bugei students finish facing off with the ikko forces all across the nation a massive steel ship floats towards Edo Harbor. The final battle between the Ikko Ikki rebels and the Edo Bugei students is about to begin. The lingering question now, just how much of Edo will be left standing once the battle ends?

It had been fairly late in the evening when three Edo Bugei students would go to Southern Edo's shipping docks. Unlike the quick transports and military ships the students would be use to what they would come across was a beautiful ship in it's own right. A majestic cargo ship painted with purple and gold flakes along the sides. It was less a ship and more of a piece of art in and of itself. However the three chose to arrive at the docks they would arrive through a thick down pouring of rain, the normally bright lights of the docks barely able to penetrate the fierce waves of water descending from on high.

As a large amount of both Japanese and Dutch workers loaded boxes on the ship the three would be urged into a small cargo building out of the rain. The man who urged them in seemed rather grim faced by the rain outside. He was a larger Dutch merchant with red hair and beard to match. In spite of his size he actually looked fairly young for a merchant, probably late 30's or early 40's. To add on more shock his Japanese accent sounded extremely fluent as he addressed the three.
"Ah, I'm very glad to see you three. They told me they would be sending over some students for the Marigold's voyage!" he said and pointed out the window towards the barely half visible ship.

"We are going to be traveling from Edo to the southern tip of Korea. Normally it isn't a bad journey, but these pirates lately...oh boy!" he said in awkwardly structured sentences. Apparently his Japanese pronunciation and vocabulary was quite well trained, but not his sentence structures.
"This rain will out my put business!" he exclaimed mostly to himself.
"I trust you guard my ship!" he said looking at the three and nodding to them before grabbing a large umbrella and urging the three to follow him on board as two Japanese workers loaded what looked to be the last box of cargo onto the vessel.

The ship was clearly an ironclad, meant originally for war but re-purposed into a cargo ship by this merchant. The ship type and paint job no doubt meant he had a large amount of wealth. Even purchasing such a ship would have been extremely difficult. It would have also made the students begin to worry about just how bad these pirates must be if an ironclad was needed to transport a large amount of cargo to Korea.

Yuriko moved through the rain with the rest of the group and into the building on the dock. She stood and listened to the man, and was thoroughly impressed with his Japanese. It wasn't like it was odd for someone to learn their language, especially when they did a lot of trading with them. But, she was impressed that someone so rich had bothered. While she stifled a little bit of a smile from his grammar. She nodded her head as they began to leave the building and back into the rain.

As they boarded the Marigold, she sighed. The rain felt nice actually, then again she was used to this sort of thing. She breathed deep of the salt air and almost gave a bit of a bounce to her step. She looked to the others who had signed up for this trip. They looked like they knew what they were getting themselves into. Which was good in her opinion, it was better than the last little excursion she went on. She was with some capable people then, but ones that weren't ready or used to combat. She wondered where they were, and what they were up to.

She shook her head. Now was not the time to think of those things. She had to focus...she had to be ready. She couldn't afford to make another mistake. She placed her hand on her face and rubbed the left side of it, reminding her. She turned to the two other companions and bowed to them. "Let's introduce ourselves. I am Kuki, Yuriko 2nd Year student, and am Scion. Let's nice to meet you, and let's do our best to get through this." She smiled and nodded her head.

Ukyo followed the group slowly on the dock listening to the conversation taking place, but not bothering to speak. The contact they met up with seemed to be a foreigner, which was a little unusual but not around these docks. The area seemed to be a thriving center of foreign chatter in Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, and some of them were speaking in English. Ukyo was interested to see how combat on a ship deck would work for him since it was rocking and rolling instead of stationary ground.

As they walked along in the rain, and water dripped from his ronin-gasa, keeping his head and shoulders dry, but the rest of his outfit was slowly becoming wetter, though his body was still dry and warm for now. He would have to see about setting his clothing to dry when the get onto the ship. One of the allies for this mission turned and introduced herself. Ukyo slowly bowed back before speaking in his rich, smooth tones, "My name is Yagyu, Ukyo. First year." He wouldn't say any more than this, keeping his track to himself. He learned fairly quickly that he shouldn't go around telling people he is on the assassin track, after seeing some reactions when he told them.

The man waited for the students to finish introducing themselves. As the group walked across a thin metal plank the rope tethers connecting the ship to the dock started getting cut into by the crew. The ship's deck smelled of old wood and the fresh rain as the merchant looked at the group carefully.
"Welcome to ship!" he said. He spread his arms wide to welcome them. Above deck they would see various crew men running around deck tightening sails, cutting ropes, and carrying supplies through various doors down below before coming up with others. It seemed the ship was in full preparation to leave and had simply been waiting on the students.

"Voyage is one week. Be comfortable." he said as he pointed towards a door that clearly lead below deck. If the group chose to get out of the storm they would find the conditions below deck fairly nice. A lot of men moved various cargo boxes and smoked while playing cards. One of the men would wink at the trio of students. His outfit seemed decidedly different from the other crewmen running around. He was most likely the second in command aboard the vessel. He was wearing a thick white coat and nice pants with shined black boots. At his hip sat two pistols, both of which looked clearly ready to be fired. If the students looked closer it would be obvious his hands had thick calluses on them.

"You kids must be our escort. That is sweet of ya. It takes most of the night to get from Edo to Osaka. Then from Osaka it will take a few days to reach Korea. Pirates 'aint attackin' us from Edo to Osaka so you school kids get comfy." he said. He was clearly a Japanese worker aboard the mostly foreign crewed ship. Most of the crew seemed to be French and spoke with thick Parisian accents to one another. They didn't even bother with the illusion of being use to Japan. After all they spent most of the time at sea anyway. Pointing down a hall to a set of door the man said.
"Sleeping cots are in that one. Take a breather and get up in a few hours if ya want. Also if you have any questions I think I'm in a bit better position to answer them than the cap' updeck. Hit me with whatever ya' got." the man seemed kind but obviously cocky.

(Sorry I know its short, please assume introduction and stuff. )
Calling Toshi’s arrival late would have been an understatement, for he made it under the wire just as the ship was preparing to depart. Barely sneaking in with the group with out no one noticing hopefully. Toshi simple followed along until the man pointed out were the sleeping quarters were, even a semi nice bed sounded really good to him but he restrained himself from running off till the others were done.

Yuriko wouldn't go to bed, or her room, quite so quickly. She'd pipe up and ask the questions that needed to be asked. She stood at attention, her training in seafaring forcing her to take a much more...lower ranked position than she'd normally be. This was not her ship, this was not her family's ship. She was essentially a guest, and as such, warranted a much lesser position. "How many aboard are combat capable? How do the pirates attack? What do they use? Are there any known Scions within their group?" She wasn't going to beat around the bush. She needed as much info as possible.

She looked to Ukyo than back. She stood there, a very serious expression on her face. She'd rather not get into another situation where she threw herself at an enemy. Yuriko clenched her hand tighter around her weapon pole. White knuckling, she grit her teeth. "I'd rather know as much about what we might face before going to rest. Helps me to plan and think. This will not be the first time I do battle on a ship, so the unknown here is not my abilities...but the enemy's and our own." She nodded her head and looked back at the swordsmen again. She didn't know if he knew about ship-board fighting, but she inclined her head to him.

Obviously she meant that she didn't know his capabilities either. Unknowns messed up everything. On the upside, they would definitely count as an unknown variable if the pirates attacked.

Ukyo would simply listen to the conversation at hand. He wasn't one to move very fast, or speak first in a conversation. Speaking of move fast, he noticed that their third and final teammate finally arrived, just a tad late. Ukyo wouldn't think anything of it, knowing that he himself is usually the late one due to his slow pace. He put the pieces together and put a name to the person's face from the little information he got when the mission was assigned. "That must be Morikawa, Toshiyuki," he thought to himself.

He was brought out of his thoughts by Yuriko saying something and then looking directly at him. He stared with a blank expression, pondering what words to express himself with, not knowing what the topic at hand actually was. He would decide that the best thing to do was to just nod his head slowly. He would then not listen to any of the information that the crewman had to offer, his thoughts were on how well he can fight with the swaying adding a new element to his footwork. He would interrupt whatever was being said at the time, "Excuse me, I'll be going to look around." It was good to know the environment he would be fighting in, as well as to practice walking before getting into any sort of fight.

The crew lead listened to the students questions carefully. Right off the bat it seemed one of the more combat minded students started asking all about the pirate's forces.
"How many aboard are combat capable? How do the pirates attack? What do they use? Are there any known Scions within their group?" The crew lead just looked around at the large men running up and down the ship. All of them clearly seemed avid sailors with fairly large, muscular builds meant for ship work.
"I wont go 'round sayin' they're a military but every man on this ship has a 'ell of a lef' hook." the man seemed to run through his words, and his thick accent showed that he was use to giving information quickly, most likely from ordering around his crew.
"I'd rather know as much about what we might face before going to rest. Helps me to plan and think. This will not be the first time I do battle on a ship, so the unknown here is not my abilities...but the enemy's and our own." The young Bugei student explained. The second in command nodded along and double checked the pistols at his side to make sure he had them ready.

"Betwe' 'ere and Korea, 'e 'ave plenty of pirates. Chinese, Filipino, Wako, sometimes Russian. We cou' talk all day 'bout pirate groups. You are hired for whatever comes at us. Cou' be Scions, cannons, guns, swords, bombs." he said with a bit of a shrug.
"Ship isn't armored like this for nothin'." he said and motioned to the large beams and steel plating around the ship. They clearly took the dangerous shipping route very seriously. After all every man on the ship needed money, food, and most importantly to not get murdered at sea.

It was then that he focused on the more quiet boy and what he had said.
"Excuse me, I'll be going to look around." was really it. The third boy, a very pretty looking young man, didn't seem to say much at all past introducing himself. Instead more content to examine everything around him. Over all the group seemed pretty ready for combat but a lot less talkative than the deck hand would have preferred.

Ukyo's wondering around the ship would unfortunately lead him to quite a few sealed doors. The various doors had signs such as "Ammo" and "Medical Supplies"[.i] above them. The ship's interior was extremely tightly sealed. Apparently the ship had been made so that even if it took some sharp hits it would still stay floating for quite a while. At this point it would likely seem like a blessing as the Bugei students tried to adjust to suddenly being on the waves. As Ukyo looked around more the ship launched from port towards Osaka. Men could be seen running all over the ship and a few even running past Ukyo into the room marked [i]"Ammo" coming out with what seemed to be rifles as they prepared the weapons for the longer voyage ahead.

If the students checked out the bunk room they would find steel walls, one port window, and a bunch of green military cots. The room was clearly made less for comfort and more to take up as little room as possible on a ship full or weapons, crew, and trade goods. Over all it seemed the ship had four floors. The above deck, the current floor the students stood on, a cargo floor below them, and at the very bottom a floor for the engine, rudder etc. of the ship.

A flurry of activity took Ukyo off guard. He darted his hand to his sword hilt, but stopped himself after he realized that it was just the crew getting ready for the voyage ahead. He got a good look at the weapon room and was impressed to see how many extra cannons and other military equipment was stored in the small looking room. He would follow the main bulk of the military to wherever they were headed. He wanted to be among the military to see how they were set up.

Also combat stories were always interesting, and Ukyo had enough scars to tell stories for days of his training time. His slow pace would almost ensure that he reached the soldiers after they were set up, and potentially during the downtime that followed, and his footsteps on the wood would announce his presence quite clearly, never being one for pure stealth.
