Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

(OOC: Nori Nori hasn't been around since the start of the month. I will give Nori until October)

It was a quiet afternoon at Edo bugei. This Sunday a special optional course had been offered. It was rare for any classes to be offered on a Sunday, however the students had been informed they would receive extra credits for attending. It was also a strange new professor's favorite day of the week. Running his hand through his hair and letting out a short sigh the new history professor Dr. Shirasu Naganori walked casually into Edo Bugei's main building. Most of the main building was still wrecked after the earthquake three months piror, however the first floor had at least finished construction. It had been quite a long time since Naganori had actually taught lessons at the school and to see it in such a state of disrepair honestly hurt his heart.

Walking into a classroom on the first floor he wrote his name on the board and took a seat at the desk in the front of the classroom. Today he was expecting four students to arrive for a special lesson about one of the most important events in Japanese history. He was rather excited to start his first side lesson as a teacher and hoped the four students who had signed up for the class would be equally thrilled.

Opening a small briefcase he had brought with him he put two hand outs on the front of his desk and would motion to students to pick them up when they entered the class. One was a list of major figures they would talk about including Tokugawa Ieyasu, Ii Naomasa, Ishida Mitsunari, and Otani Yoshitsugu. The other handout was a map of the area Sekigahara took place at.

Mikazuki sighed while tiredly walking back to school on a Sunday. She didn't expect the class to be on a Sunday and was forced to cancel her plans of touring the shopping distract to see how the rebuilding was coming along with a fellow Home Ec. member. It was on this day she left her room back at the provided apartment complex alone to arrive at the school. Scaffolds remained outside the building with construction workers on lunch break or off for day by their absence. The school bag in her hands was packed very lightly of just a text book, notes, and her stamp from Haiku class. Didn't make any sense to carry the usual day's load for one Sunday.

As she entered into the cleaned up ground floor, she texted a fast message to her friend if they're still interested in clothes shopping later along the way to class where she found the instruction to not be the principal but the newest teacher some weeks ago. "Good day, doctor," she greeted with memory of just that the man was a doctor out of unfamiliarity with the man still but he looked very prepared for today's lesson. With that greeting and a bow did Mikazuki headed for a far left seat of the room to text her friend more before class officially started.

It was a nice afternoon Matsu would say, he was thrilled knowing it would be a lesson in a long time - since the earthquake and his business over-sea - he was asleep until he was notified for class just then, he suffered jet-lag and he need to re-adjust himself to the time of Edo. It didn't take long for him to get ready to walk to school and attend the Sunday class. His back-pack was filled with brand new text-book just for this class, pens and pencils. He believe he didn't need more than this. He entered the school building and looked at his phone for further instruction to reach the class. It was not elaborate, so for him it was easy to understand.

Scanning the furnished first floor he found the class, looking at the state of the area, it seemed as if somebody was cleaning before he arrived. Whoever it was they must be a really nice and dedicated student. He took his time walking to class, but it seems he was rather early, perhaps the first to arrive. But he could be wrong. He looked inside the class to find that his sister, Mikazuki, was there and the teacher, a figure he is unfamiliar with. It's not the principal like last time, he looked at the classroom and teacher with quaint curiosity. But kept his thoughts and pondering to himself. He has misgivings of meeting his sister today.

He glanced at his sister and tilted his head, hoping she'd notice him. It's been a while since they met each other after all, hoping this hadn't soured their relationship any - as they were essentially estranged for a few months. And, he bowed his head in the direction of the teacher, gesturing his face to the direction of the teacher's preparation. He might enjoy the class after all. He moved to take a seat next to his sister's, carefully taking a peek at her.

The idea of Extra class really didn’t appeal to Toshi, however the idea of accelerating his schooling and shortening his time here did appeal to him very much so. It was for this reason that he had sacrificed his pleasant Sunday afternoon to take this class on Sekigara.

As he arrived at the main building he noticed how eerily quiet the place was, which shouldn’t have been a surprise since very few people had a need to be here on a Sunday. It seemed that Toshi had become accustomed to the usual masses that gathered him and a small part of him found this worry some. None the less he has somewhere he needed to be so dwelling on this would only end up making him late and being late for an optional class of all things was something he didn’t want over his head.

It didn’t take him long to find the classroom, entering he noticed the good Doctor had a stack of papers. Grabbing a pair Toshi then found him self a seat slightly away from the pair, it seemed like there was some uneasiness between then and he wanted none of that. Looking over the hand outs he simple waited for the class to start.

OOC: I'm so so so sorry about not joining earlier. I completely forgot to post.

Kitsu was tired of all of the fighting, and artillery training. On top of that, his plan to revive his clan wasn't completely started yet, so he decided to take a break with an extra class that seemed rather easy, as well as interesting. He knew all about the battle at Iga between his ancestor and Oda but was wanting to know more about the battles that took place back in the real warring states period.

He would stride into the class with not much of a word to anyone else besides a wave. His time here so far had not been a particularly hard one. A class he got thrown out of for, in his words, being too good at it. And his only other interest here wasn't even part of the intentional school curriculum. He couldn't help but daydream about his new found boyfriend and sigh happily. He made his way to a desk and sat down. He read the board but didn't really pay attention to what he read as he leaned back into his chair and waited for the class to begin.

Dr. Shirasu Naganori watched as a group of students walked into the class. Some of the students sat towards the back, however four seemed to stick out in particular. Looking around Naganori check off the names of all of the students one by one. Optional courses carried quite a bit of extra credit with them and he made sure to carefully ask the name of each and every student as he took attendance. For an optional course the room seemed surprisingly full today.
"Good day Doctor."a girl from the Honda clan was nice enough to greet her teacher as everyone sat down and looked up at the board. It was a white board with multiple markers in silver trays below it. Grabbing a large, black marker Naganori wrote three words on the board.
SEKIGAHARA! then to the lower left corner wrote TOYOTOMI and to the lower right corner wrote TOKUGAWA.

"Welcome everyone. I see we have a lot of students today, I'm glad. Today I will be teaching you all about the famous battle of Sekigahara. Unfortunately, before we can even get into that battle we have to backtrack a few years. Does anyone know who Oda Nobunaga is?" he asked the question sarcastically. After all every students in the country would know that name, whether they wanted to or not.
"NOBUNAGA! Was known as the first great unifier of Japan. He didn't actually unify that much of Japan however. Only the very middle of the country. That was of course until he betrayed and killed By his general Akechi Mitsuhide." and with that Naganori wrote nobunaga's name off to the side of the board before putting a large X over it.

"After Nobunaga died, his general Totyotomi Hideyoshi killed Akechi Mitsuhide. Hideyoshi then started defeating many of Nobunaga's former enemies and allies and eventually did take over the country. That was of course until he died." he then wrote Hideyoshi's name and put an X through it as well.

"So, the emperor has no power at this point in history, and the military lord of Japan just died. Where does that lave our country you ask? Well, Assisting both Nobunaga and Hideyoshi in taking over the country was an old man named Tokugawa Ieyasu. When Hideyoshi died, his six year old son was left in charge of the country. Ieyasu thought a six year old running the country was insane and started a war. This of course was met with opposition from Hideyoshi's second in command Ishida Mitsunari." he then wrote Mitsunari's name under Toyotomi, and Ieyasu's name under Tokugawa. He would then put a star next to each name.

"These are our generals. Representing Hideyoshi's legacy is Ishida Mitsunari. Representing old school samurai and a strong desire to control Japan is Tokugawa Ieyasu. Given we are in the 400th year of Tokugawa control over Japan I'm sure you all know how this played out. The big question is how precisely did it play out? What happened? Why was it that way? That is what we will explore today. Before we begin, however, does anyone have any questions?"

Hearing the seat next to her move in occupancy, the girl shifted her body while sending off some final texts of meeting her friends on a shopping date. When the teacher's voice picked up did Mika promptly turned off and hid her phone once class began. Most of her full attention given to the doctor at the front of the room and pretending her brother wasn't sticking out of her blindspot.

Like the principal under the Nobunaga early years lecture, the man spoke clearly in outlining the set up to what most everyone knows as the stage set up since Nobunaga's fall and the string of murders that followed it. It boiled down to a deep conflict between two retainers for control of the land. It was like a movie placement from how the Doctor described it that held Mika's starring attention to hear more of this story and its finer details.

Kitsu would listen to the topic at hand. The small joke about knowing how the battle turned out wasn't lost on Kitsu, but he couldn't help but think about how Oda managed to destroy his own clan before his campaign was over. Kitsu raised his hand when it was asked if anyone had questions. He would wait patiently to be called on before standing up. "Will we be going over the advanced tactics involved in the battle, or just the basic information such as how many men and how many died?" Kitsu would wait for his answer before bowing slightly and sitting down.

He was being more respectful than his normal brutish self due to his interest in the defeat of Oda, being a small comfort that he didn't manage to take over Japan.

Matsu would pay attention to the their teacher, Dr. Shirasu Naganori was his name - he recalled, explaining most of what he already knows from what he was taught before. But it was nice to refresh his mind. However, it appears the teacher will fill him and the other students with more than what they've probably learned previously in other classes. He is aware that Mika wasn't paying him any attention, and that doesn't trouble him, after all they were coming here to learn - not to affirm their relationship. He followed what have been explained by Dr. Naganori on the topic at hand. Matsushina was keen, and he didn't let his eyes nor ears go off from listening and looking at everything the Doctor was doing in front of the class. Not even once he missed a words or a sight of the Doctor.

He looked at Mika, then at another student who posed a question. He then looked back to the Doctor. The question was an interesting one, would the teacher be explaining more than what the principal usually explain? More than what text-books and historical records contain, or could tell them? He is interested in knowing what else will be explain and what the doctor could explain to them, he hope to get something out of this lesson.

Toshi kept quite in his seat listing attentively to the good doctor, while the others posed questions he simple waited. From what had been said it appeared that this was going to be a simple class, which did raise one question in Toshi’s mind, “Will we be learning History’s version or the Tokugawa’s version.”

They way that history is written by the victors but Toshi knew that was a loaded statement, after all real history is the actual events that happened in the past not the events we learn or told about but everything. Which leads to a problem and the origin of the saying, for those who survive the events of the past only want their version to be told after all they are the hero’s and victors. Thus, most of the time all other records are lost or destroyed especially when those so-called heroes had done very shady and evil things to obtain victory. The period to which the group was studying was one such time, as with most wars winning is all that mattered.

So quietly Toshi sat and waited, all the while wondering not only what the Doctor would teach but how the other students would receive said information. Would they question or would they be complacent.

The Doctor waited eagerly to hear what kinds of questions the students would ask. First seemed to be a red haired boy he knew as Kitsu.
"Will we be going over the advanced tactics involved in the battle, or just the basic information such as how many men and how many died?" the question brought a smile to the teacher's face. Here was a boy who was clearly focused on strategies of war instead of dates and numbers. It made sense given he was at the Bugei, but it did make Naganori curious about the kid.

"That is a good question to begin with. We will be covering both pretty briefly. To be frank this is more about names, dates, and intentions. Now while we will go over general strategies, I wouldn't be opposed to holding an advanced class later on the breakdown of various tactics used in and around the battle." though it was the next question that would bring an actual laugh from the Doctor.

“Will we be learning History’s version or the Tokugawa’s version.” asked another student. Looking over at Toshi the teacher had a soft smile about him.
"Mr. Morikawa, I didn't even have to look to know who asked that." after all the name more than gave enough the reason behind Toshi's question. Walking around the front of the room for a moment he obviously looked at the windows, which happened to be closed. He then looked at the closed door, and then at the ceiling grinning all the while.
"Well, best I can tell the room isn't bugged and no one is standing next to an open door or window listening, so we'll say the history version and not the Shogunate version." he said with a bit more of a grin as he walked to the front of the classroom.

"MR. MORIKAWA BRING UP AN EXCELLENT POINT THOUGH! History is written by the victor! Who was right, who was wrong, this is decided after the fact by historians and governments. Speaking of governments this brings us into why we had this conflict in the first place!" he said as he pointed at the crossed out named of Oda Nobunaga.
"As I said, Nobunaga took over part of Japan. Then Hideyoshi took over the rest of it. Hideyoshi even tried a failed invasion of Korea. Arguably, he was the most powerful man in Japan. Under him stood five great generals. Three you will need to know are Ishida Mitsunari, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Maeda Toshiie. Sadly by the time he unified Japan Hideyoshi was also very old. When he died he asked his five great generals a simple thing, look after is heir the young Hideyori. Guide him to rule Japan." he said as he wrote the name Toyotomi Hideyori on the board.

"Instantly Ieyasu did what he has always done. He went back to his home base and began gathering power. Durring the failed invasions of Korea Ieyasu claimed rebellions in his land forced him to keep his troops home. So at the time of Hideyoshi's death Ieyasu actually had more troops than most other Daimyo combined. He also wasn't stupid. The glue binding Japan together through force was getting old and soon died. One Daimyo or another would declare war on the Toyotomi soon enough. So he started getting ready. Now I personaly don't believe he himself was getting ready for war against the Toyotomi but that is debatable. Ishida Mitsunari, a firm follower of the man who rose him up from a simple monk to a Daimyo, got extremely upset at Ieyasu gathering forces and issuing order on the young Hideyori's behalf. NOW FORTUNATELY, we have this third man Maeda Toshiie. Anyone who was anyone knew Toshiie. He was an amazing spear master, he had a large domain, and he had followed Nobunaga and then Hideyoshi to unifying the land. Toshiie kept the other two firmly in check. Sadly, as i said Toshiie had followed Nobunaga from a young age which meant he too was quite old and died almost a year after tensions grew between Mitsunari and Ieyasu. Mitsunari accused Ieyasu of preparing to take the country himself, and would soon march a force East to put down what he viewed as absolute rebellion to the Tokugawa towards the Toyotomi." and with that the teacher drew a violent explosion looking effect between Mitsunari and Ieyasu's names.

"NOW! This is the part we could debate for centuries, and we aren't going to because honestly that isn't a debate course. I will let everyone answer though. Quickly, without judging other students, why do you think Mitsunari was so mad at Ieyasu? One camp says that Mitsunari took the job of the young Hideyori's guardian very seriously and was worried Ieyasu was trying to raise himself to power over the Toyotomi." he said holding up his left palm.
"NOW THE OTHER SIDE! THIS SIDE! It says that Mitsunari was mad because Ieyasu was taking HIS OWN power away. After all, Mitsunari was second in command to Hideyoshi, and whispering in the ear of Hideyoshi's extremely young son would secure Mitsunari's clan name for as long as the Toyotomi name existed. Maybe even take over the Toyotomi name for himself! What do you all think?"

The odd behavior of the teacher thanks to one particular question was strange to search the room for something as though it would be a definitive issue to say certain things wrong. If the Shogunate valued their students minds and futures then what of history is there to omit from having repeated again just for sharing this information. The Doctor's odd cheer made Mika blink in confusion after processing this and sat to listen for what the lecture had in store. This man, however, did not act like the Principal had. This was was much more grand about his passion for history that Mika drew her own conclusions that these simple walls are likely not enough to contain him nor his voice.

The Doctor spoke without pause to drink something as he carried himself in a light pace in front of the room. In an attempt to put the man's words into summary, the start of the great battle was over a disagreement about the state of things. The previous one to unify the country is about on his death bed, amazing no one had assassinated him prior or during this period, when asking his leading generals to raise his son to be ruler. A good conscious move but not well shared as it seems the generals were all just waiting for him to die off.

Ieyasu foresaw the power struggle ahead and might have raised his numbers ahead of time before the passing. The raise of numbers was too fearful that caused Mitsunari to call out their actions while the peace keeper, and last bind to possibly prevent this, perished. With little else keeping the two parties at bay then things ran to their own accord.

Mika sighed to herself at how many gaps there are where history and the start of this large battle was based on pure accusations then proof. There's also the other two generals but to be excluded would mean that they were rather insignificant or just weaker to go with whoever had influence over them. "A larger army to rival everyone else is a large imbalance of power though, I find the threat to his position to be very real with those terms. If there were another who were to challenge for power then who exactly is charged to look after the young Hideyori?"

It was clear that the good Doctor was very passionate about history in general almost annoyingly so. Even so Toshi full attention was on the man as he spoke, when prompted for an answer he gave his.

“Regardless of what Ieyasu believed, gather a force that could rival any other and not following his lord wishes would be concerning. As for Mitsunari he was originally a monk an it takes a certain kind of person to fully give oneself to a cause, as such it would make sense that Hideyoshi would have been everything to him. So, it makes sense why Mitsunari was made in this sense as its akin to someone defaming one’s god. Regardless of both men motivations they were selfish, as ultimately like all thing it ended in war”

Kitsu would simply listen to the lecture. He wasn't one to understand political motivations, not having any experience in politics at all, so when prompted for an answer, he would shrug. "All I know is that when someone feels like their territory is threatened, like a wild animal they will lash out. Power, land, people, anything taken without express permission and deal making can piss off the other side."

He wouldn't say anything more. He bent his head down to take a few notes before leaning back in his chair again.

The Professor smiled at his student's responses.
"Not bad at all. Well done everyone." he said with a decided smile as he drew a circle around the name SEKIGHARA on the board.
"Now then, lets get into the actual battle shall we? Sekigahara! The actual area of Sekighara is located in the Gifu area. It was a large valley surrounded by hills. Most of the generals, namely the two commanders Mitsunari and Ieyasu, set up their camps on separate hill sides. This meant that if anyone wanted to attack one of the general's camps they would have to rush up a hillside full of gunners, samurai, and cannons. This clearly gave the most important locations on the battlefield a strong, natural defense." he said as he handed everyone a map of Sekigahara.

"The battle itself took place on an extremely foggy morning. You see, late the night before Mitsunari had heard that Tokugawa Ieyasu's army was on the move West. The two armies had recently set up forces at castles fairly close to each other. They had been waiting for the other to move at the border between the Toyotomi and Tokugawa loyal regions. Mitsunari thought he would set out with his men and ambush Ieyasu early in the morning. It wasn't the worst plan mind you. Sekigahara is a fairly secluded area and would make it hard for Ieyasu to retreat." and with that the Professor drew a rough sketch of the map he had given the students and then surrounded parts of the borders with hills and mountains.

"Now, here is the first major problem. Ieyasu was a battle hardened general. His men all had a deep loyalty to him personally because he had commanded them for several decades. The Western Army on the other hand, was composed of multiple generals who had gotten together essentially out of memorial for Hideyoshi. Their leader, Mitsunari, was himself more of a monk turned accountant. A lot of egos started clashing on both sides. However when the Eastern Forces started acting up, they all had big general Ieyasu, along with a certain relative of Matsushina's, to step in and tell them all to tone it down. Mitsunari didn't have such respect from his men. So a lot of strategies kept being put forward, then argued down. So when the final attack came on the morning of Sekigahara the plan was only half established. I'm sure you can all understand the problem here." Then the Professor drew multiple clan crests such as the Mori, Ishida, Otani, Tokugawa, Honda, and Ii.

"In fact, not many people realize this but the Western Army had actually put the Mori in charge of their forces. After all the Mori had the largest army in the West. They also knew battle strategy, and agreed to side with the Toyotomi loyalists. So really it should have been the Mori giving the commands. Yet every time they did it seemed Mitsunari had his own thoughts on how the army should move, and what tactics should be used. You can imagine how this made the assembled samurai feel. They currently had a general, who was being undercut, and now every order they received came from someone who had only been on a few battlefields himself. Keep in mind, the Mori commander was also one of the five guardians. So he was suppose to be on equal footing with Mitsunari." he pointed out with a raised eyebrow to show how strange the situation truly was.

"Of course we have the power of hindsight to notice these cracks before the actual start of battle." he explained carefully.
"After all back then those generals would only see smaller pieces of the bigger cracks in their forces. Now, in a minute we will get into an even larger problem than these. First though, i'd like to hear your opinions on something. How would you settle the conflict on the Toyotomi side? All these generals, all trying to get honor and not having much loyalty. What do you do to get everyone together?"
