The atmosphere in the room was dark and tense. The first group of students had been violently dragged away and pushed out of the building. The second group had been screamed out to go upstairs. For the third group, nothing. As two groups of students already left everything was completely quiet on the first floor of the school building. Then they heard it. One by one a steady drip, drip, drip.

If the students looked up they would see it. Three names in blood on the ceiling. Yuuki, Roshi, Suishoku. It was their names in blood to be sure. As it steadily dripped onto the floor then vanished the moment it touched the ground as though absorbed by the building itself. Below their names a simple word.
"Library" which meant all three would have to brave the cold outside and go towards the library.

While all three looked up at the bloody ceiling the school's doors would violently swing open and an extremely cold gust of air would rip through the first floor as all three would hear their names whispered by the night itself.

Yuuki was beginning to maybe, sort of, regret this a little. It started when there was all the sudden shouting. She covered her ears and hastily pulled out her noise cancelling headphones, but the shouting was sudden, and loud, and pervasive, and she lifted her knees to her chest and put her head between them. Everyone was running and shouting and, fuck, she, hell, it needed to stop, she regretted this already it needed to stop-

-she shuddered as the shouting stopped and the both the first and second group were moved out of the room. Oh god, she really didn't want to do this now. If things continued on that vein, she'd have a breakdown in the first fifteen minutes. It wasn't even scary, it was just awful and painful and too much too much too much too much. She hated sudden loud noises. She hated them! Maybe she should leave? Shakily, she finished putting in her noise-cancelling earbuds and started up the white noise generator on her phone.

At least she'd be prepared... probably...

She sat down. Immediately, she started thinking. Groups of three. In order of when they'd been signed up? No, not quite, but in order of, something? There were only four of them left in the room at the moment, but- hm. She thought... and if so... That meant... She swallowed and looked up. She was going to be with one of the Elites? Oh god, she was... if she did have a breakdown, she really didn't want to have one in front of one of the most competent students in Japan. At least she seemed nice enough, but she just... no. Can't be stupidly nervous about this. Can't. The other one she'd be with... she hadn't seen much of him, but he seemed enthusiastic enough about this.

(Amusingly enough, she failed to notice anything odd about him.)

If she focussed out of the corners of her eyes, she saw swimming symbols around the both of them. She didn't heavily focus on either, but they seemed to be at an idle default of "performance" and "healing", maybe? She'd properly figure it out if she needed to determine their roles in this... it was a game. It was just a game designed to scare her. She hoped there weren't any strobe lights. Strobe lights basically stunned her, and she didn't want to get startled into staring blankly into space for several minutes...

...not the point. Where was their call to action, anyway? She really hoped no one screamed in her face. She'd probably start crying and, as previously mentioned, that would be extremely embarrassing in front of the older students. It wasn't like she wanted to be so bad with loud noises, they just- they crowded around in her head and drowned her out and sparked pain, pain, too much everywhere and- oh? Dripping "blood"? Could it be...?

Oh thank god, it was subtle. It was quiet. It was even written word, so she wouldn't have to worry about asking it to be repeated if she got overwhelmed and lost all sense of auditory processing. She adjusted the sound on her headphones again, turning it down so she could hear her surroundings better once more.

The doors suddenly slamming open still wasn't appreciated- a sudden cutting breeze was also not her idea of a good time- but at least it wasn't more sudden loud noise. She, slightly nervously, stepped forward, quietly gesturing to the other two students, not entirely trusting herself to try to speak. She leaned forward before rocking back and forth slightly. The library. Entirely doable. With two students who'd been at this school much longer than she had, she wouldn't even have to worry about getting lost. It'd be fine.

notes: the symbols come from yuuki's passive one. i took a guess as to what it'd show by default, but if at any point you'd like "the ability your character considers their most important at that moment" changed, just mention it, and if it comes up, that'll be what yuuki notices. also i can change this if those initial guesses weren't correct.

Relax. You're not going to have a breakdown in front of one of the most competent students of Edo Bugei. You're gonna have one in front of Roshi. Or wait... You mean the other... Well, while Roshi's name may not be known to every corner of the campus and Edo proper, it might be known by enough to know that there's this weird guy called Roshi Bento who is - being honest - a bit weird. He's the zombie nearby, listening to Spooky Scary Skeletons via the headphones attached to his phone.

You may recall that a freakin' zombie had lumbered in and signed up in his name. It was he, and he was wearing fake blood, face-paint, dirt, and torn clothes with a haggard look about him to fit right in. It is, however, a matter of fact that he knew to draw the line somewhere. He was getting into the thrill of it, but he wasn't going to cause an obviously-scared-out-of-their-wits individual to have a heart attack. Besides, Suishoku was here and he preferred to remain on good terms with her.

Still, he dug this ambience. They were really putting the effort into it. Plus, they way they had the other groups get shuffled off was pretty stylish, what with the mob and the spooky voices. Roshi almost wanted to high-five the other zombie. However, their own invitation was different. There was a dripping from the ceiling, one which he noticed was being absorbed into the floor instantaneously. Looked like blood... Okay, and where was the source? Aha! Their...names were all written in blood, along with a location. The zombie Bento boy groaned in approval...and then the doors burst open with cold winds abound!

"NYAH!"

Oh look! Not only a fast zombie, but an agile one, as he leapt upon the table from the cold, cold wind! Roshi then cleared his throat and said...

"Could I have my coat back? It's behind the door now."

Her arms were crossed loosely, hands gripping her elbows to keep herself together. It's just a test of bravery. Nothing bad is going to happen, nothing harmful is going to happen. Suishoku struggled to keep these in mind but the screams and watching how violently handled group 1 was taken away made her shiver a little nervously. The next group left her flinching and rubbing her ears at how loud the screams yelled at them to go to the second floor. Already this was unnerving that she began to feel a bit warm and sweat a little in trying to keep composure.

But what of her own group? Suishoku turned a bit to find a girl who also huddled from the loud noises and looked shaken as well. The other student was...a zombie!? Suishoku stared at them as they stood off to the side. Actually, for a zombie, they looked and actively very chill about it. Didn't a zombie approach the other group? The two were so different that made her question what were they up to. It was dark in the room with just the three of them left and the gallery of 3rd years and teachers near by.

Drip...drip...drip...

Something cold hit her head like a raindrop. Not once but a few times. A leak? Suishoku looked up and had to squint her eyes a bit in the dim lights but sure enough, her name was up there in what she prayed to be fake blood. Wait, Roshi!? Her head snapped quickly to the zombie, the only other person that could be here. She stared at him and gave him a stressed grin. The majority of the 3rd years were in on this so was Roshi as well? Did he dress up for the hell of it!? That-That right there would be a Roshi thing but he wouldn't be a mole...would he? Unless he was in for the ride. Knowing that the zombie over there was Roshi did have her loosen the hold on her elbows. Roshi and the girl being Yuuki.

Her hand finally reached for the odd water droplets that fell on her head to wipe it away but as Suishoku withdrew her hand to look at it, the blood itself seemed to lift away. A relic skill? Looking at hand also made her look at the floor. Another message was there reading simply The library. Just then the doors flung open with a door wind passing through them all. She eeked and shuddered from the cold air invading the once warm space. Their names whispering again in passing while Zombie Roshi groaned then asked for his jacket. Speaking of jackets, they'll all need one just for going outside.

"Ugh, you do have a point. Think my muffler is hanging around somewhere. Yuuki, do you need anything?" Suishoku finally spoke with a heavier sigh than intended and speaking a bit higher toned than intended like a cross mother might. She was quickly thankful that Roshi was here and it helped shave off some of the edge on this night. She rubbed her arms and went to get her muffler as well as Roshi's jacket from the near by rackets by the door. It took a bit of pulling but the jacket came free while wrapping herself up with the long scarf. "Well, let's go see." She hoped for the best. The building only seemed to be the place of haunting so outside must be a bit safe, if not cold.

The message had been sent. If the students looked back they would simply see the teachers and third years staring at them saying nothing. Just watching as their collective eyes seemed to glow an unnatural yellow in what dim light existed on the first floor. It looked like an army of yellow eyed cats stalking them in the darkness. To make things eve more strange, even tough the blood had landed directly on Suishoku it was already gone. no trace of paint or any type of moisture remained.

As Suishoku got her warm gear, and handed Roshi his coat, a second cold blast of air swept through, with whispers of their names on the wind. It was calling them as in the distance, briefly, the library seemed extremely bright. When the group left the main building the doors would suddenly slam shut behind them. Then they would notice just how dark the campus was. In the distance the city of Edo looked completely normal, but on campus it was almost pitch black in every building that wasn't the dorms. It was amazing how much of the campus had been rebuilt after the war in the spring. It was almost as though the war hadn't happened. Yet it would be impossible to tell right now.

The walk would be extremely daunting. While nothing would yell or jump out at them, the cold Edo night had a bitter chill to it as the group walked. The library itself was a large, western looking building with a large main door. Now the question was how the group would enter, and in what order.

Yeah...so it was the three of them braving the cold first, as yellow-eyed students and faculty eyed them. Where...had he seen that hole yellow-eyed thing before? It seemed like it was in a movie or a game or something... And the blood wasn't just fake, but super fake, it being an illusion and all.

The voices called out to them...

"We're coming! Hold your somethings!"

Hold your horses, hold your applause, hold onto your butts... It didn't matter. Just hold on a minute! Okay, now they were ready to go. In the distance, the library seemed lit up. Even more so when the doors slammed shut, causing Roshi to flinch before looking back. Now, they were truly isolated... Roshi had been here at night, but there were normally little lights to see by. They were blacked out now, leaving them in the deep darkness. There could be anything out there.

Very bad things.

Something that people had overlooked, of course, was that the three of them probably had cellphones on them. Well, Roshi did. He couldn't speak for the other two. He pulled his out and activated the light. Nothing leapt out at them, and soon they reached the library. Presumably, the doors would be open. Roshi approached first, because...well...he wanted to see how far the rabbit hole goes. Thus, he would open the door.

"Hello? Uhh...brains? Librarians?"

Pause. Gulp.

"...ninjas?"

He didn't want to be attacked by ninjas on Halloween.

Suishoku bundled herself up and followed outside, leaving behind the strange mob of students behind them. Not that it was much of them leaving. The dorms slammed shut loudly enough behind them that it was more like the dorms kicked them out! Once outside the warm dorm building did the campus appearance turned more dark than ever. Literally the power seemed to have gone out for Edo Bugei in comparison to the far end off lights in Edo beyond the school’s main gate. Cold and uneased, Suishoku walked relatively close with the group. The voices ahead giving off a vibe of impatience as they called out to them. Can ghosts be that impatient? They were seemingly the last group to leave the dorms in hardly any rush.

Thankfully for everyone in the party, nothing jumped at them from the cold darkness. The school grounds kept quiet. This was good as Suishoku would have panicked if something came running out at them to encourage they run to the library faster. Zombie Roshi arrived at the door first and opened it. Just like the school, no lights. She checked on the younger girl briefly efote heading inside. Of course when they all did enter the voices that lured them here backed off for another yelling session.

“What were we supposed to look for here..?” Suishoku had to ask while readjusting her scarf to wrap around her ears loosely. Not just for the incoming noise but that the building seemed cold despite the group just arriving from the cold outdoors. The only spooky thing she could think of was the library basement valts hidden somewhere so if not that then why the library?

The trio entered the library to find something truly strange. The lighting looked as though it was from three decades ago. Cobwebs and dust everywhere as though no one had used the library for years. Ahead of them a group seemed to leave the main floor. It appeared to be the group that walked to the library before them. Yet no one cam to talk to them. No one came to greet this new group.

As the trio looked around they would hear a child voice whispering to them. The child couldn't have been older than 13 as he looked at the students with wide eyes. He had short, black hair and was wearing an outfit that looked like it was from 1900. His skin was ghostly white with dark circles around his eyes.
"Hey, Hey, you guys!Did you hear the foreigners brought new guns?! You can use them with just your hand! COME LOOK!" then turned around and ran away from them towards the stairs. The back of his skull appeared to be missing as he ran off. The back of his shirt was covered in blood that the students wouldn't have noticed before as the boy simply vanished into the back of the library.

It was then that three red balloons floated from the second floor balcony down to the three students. All three suddenly popped as three copies of the same note fell on the floor.
"Take the elevator to the second basement floor."

The moment all three students had finished reading they would hear the ding of an elevator as the basement elevator suddenly opened. Nothing appeared to be inside and it looked completely normal.

The sudden change of the somewhat modern library they should all know, Yuuki a maybe on that one, left each of them wondering. The light provided from their phones showed a far more aged appearance to all the light fixtures. Cobwebs and dust layered everything as Suishoku ran a finger across one of the book spines to feel a large build up under her index. But where to now with this? No one was exactly brave enough to make the first move as even the shelves didn't seem like they were in the same places.

"Hmm..."
Suishoku rubbed her head in uncertainty of what the voices wanted them to do next so she tried listening for the next lure of whispers that seemed to know their names right off the bat. A few minutes rolled by when, softly, one could be heard. It sounded like a small boy and their phone lights searched for the owner. Lit up from the dark library was a boy in some pretty retro styled clothes and wide eyes. He oddly looked, or sounded rather, eager to meet them.

"Huh? Uh foreigners kinda have those," she replied as to what was so amazing about that. Of course a gun can be used with just your hand. How else would anyone be able to pull the trigger? As she thought of this in her mind, the kid eager run off where their flashlights would catch sight of the blood on the back of his clothes. "Oh why..." Suishoku moaned in dismay of her thoughts just leading to that grim punchline. The girl placed her head in her heads in shame of herself on that.

The boy never came back for them afterwards or stopped to call back to them. His shoes pattering up a set of stairs upwards. They may as well follow him than roam the unfamiliar library. There could be library ninjas still about for all she and Roshi knew. Unwilling to just throw herself to the creepy library shelves, Suishoku followed after the kid upstairs to see what he wanted to show them. She expected guns or a wall of them hanging on display racks or whatever. Three red balloons weren't these. Of course when coming close to them would they pop with notes falling to the floor. No kid in sight. She went over and gathered up the notes to look them over with the light of her phone for any codes or markings on the paper. All of them same text to take the elevator down to the 2nd floor basement. "We have an actual elevator to the basement?"

The signature ding of an elevator would show them the way but that wasn't too important. They're have to ride it anyway at one point or another. It was the fact that there was an actual working elevator in the library that can take them to the basement! Where the hell was that hiding this whole time!? Access to anywhere further than the basic basement entry was a bit bizarre to her unless Suishoku never really got to know the school library all that well in the first place. Not only was that now a thing but just going there is another question. All that should be in the basement were some old books and records. "What would be the point of going there?" She turned to Roshi for an idea before explaining to Yuuki why she was more confused about they ability to access the supposed hidden basement portion this than frightened of going there at all. Suishoku was being more naive of the possible fears they would face thanks to the secret basement keeping her preoccupied.

Okay... So, they entered the library and...

"I guess the ninjas are out. This place is filthy."

Roshi was just a little hung-up on the library ninjas, yes. Following his discovery of their existence, he had been a bit curious and left out a number of books to lure them out. Mostly, he got nothing, but one day he found himself waking up in a closet with a copy of Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much check out in his name.

At any rate, the library was indeed a mess, and possibly re-organized. He couldn't decide whether this was accidental time travel, or retro-actively making it look disused.

Meanwhile, they got a visit from Oliver Twist, who was talking about the new guns...that'd blown out the back of his head... Man, everything seemed different and wrong about this place, and then a gun statistic came out of nowhere like that. Even Roshi was a little sick from that. Suishoku clearly didn't like that one either. Then, there were...

"Uhh...balloons?"

Honestly, the effort put into all of this was impressive, but why the balloons? Well, they popped and gave off a message which was...admittedly confusing. They both didn't know about the elevator, but for Roshi, there was an extra hitch in things.

"Why do we have a second basement here?"

Yeah, the elevator didn't bother him so much as there needing to be an extra basement at all. After all, he DID know this place well, having been all over it before. The elevator being a thing could've been his own carelessness, though. This... This was a different issue, entirely. Suishoku wondered what was going on down there and...the zombie Roshi's head seemed to burst with ideas. There could be dead people, or live people gone mad, or cultists looking to summon a demon, or an ancient alien, or...

"A mad scientist? I...think we have to find out."

Which meant...heading for the elevator. The elevator of DOOOOM!!!

The elevator seemed fairly new. As it dinged again for the students to enter it likely would have been placed in the library over the summer while the school was being repaired. It was no secret that the main school building had one, but for such an old library to now have an elevator so modern installed couldn't have been an easy task.

Unfortunately the elevator seemed the only way for the students to go. The lights in the back of the first floor had all been turned off and the way upstairs seemed blocked by large nests of what, at first glance, could only be described as extremely venomous spiders. Unfortunately not just one or two either. The path up to the second floor looked as though the spiders had had a nest in the stairwell for easily twenty years.

This mostly left the elevator in front of them, or back out into the cold and trying to return to the main building to surrender.

They all pondered about the elevator in their own ways of various amazement that there was one at all. The library could have under gone improvements but with how aged everything looked, it could have been an older shaft that ended up hiding away at some point. Either way if the existence of an elevator was there before or not, there now was one in the building.

Roshi brought up the idea of a mad scientist and that could be it. He did mention there being a second one when she generally thought the basement was a single floor under. The cards from the balloons indicated little else but Suishoku pocketed them anyway without a second thought and went to look to the elevator to pause with hands curled tensely.

The elevator was pretty ordinary so it can't have been that but those spiders did give her second thoughts on looking too far away from the group. Going too far away was also a bad idea too. While they were busy standing around wondering and looking at the cards under their cellphone lights did she just now notice that the library has gotten much darker. Between facing a volley of maybe spiders or walking through the dark library for the exit, Suishoku stiffly walked to the library elevator and hopped in. "May be our only chance to see what is down there." She edged herself to the back of the elevator in measure of keeping away from the spiders if they dared to leave their nests. "All board."

Yes, the elevator must have been new, but not easily fit in the old library...especially one that now looked older than dirt. They couldn't possibly leave this floor via the stairs, though, because it looked like the spiders from Stephen King's: The Mist were living here, and that their nests were on the stairways, making impassable and horrible. Well, they couldn't go back. If they surrendered, the cast would have somekind of terrible fate planned for them all. Like...they could be mercilessly egged and dunked in Mountain Dew, or tied up in noodles and covered in fish, or...

Umm, it's worth noting that Roshi was a bit hungry, right now.

"Brains..."

Then, he realized that Suishoku had already stepped into the elevator, possibly because the stairs were dark and full of spiders, spiders that - for all Roshi knew - had eaten the ninjas. He decided to follow suit at the invitation.

"Uhh, yeah. Let's not be HERE any longer. Much as I like the attention to detail...I don't want the detail to pay attention to us.

Going down?

The three seemed to agree that they wanted nothing to do with the spiders before them. As they got into the elevator it seemed to function like a fully normal elevator as the group chose B2 for the destination. The elevator doors closed, though at the last two seconds of the door closing the group could have sworn they saw an odd clown with giant, beast like teeth smiling at them and waving right as the doors finished closing and the elevator proceeded downstairs. The occurrence would be unnerving to anyone.

As the elevator opened they would find themselves in an extremely old archive. Most of the lights had been turned off, save for a few extremely dim overheads. It looked a lot like the first floor shelves but all of the shelves had glass cases over them and the books behind them looked extremely old. As they proceeded they would find a strange, unrecognizable man in full armor from 1200 Japan pointing a spear at them.

思へばこの世は常の住み家にあらず In truth, this world is not eternally inhabited

草葉に置く白露、水に宿る月よりなほあやし It is more transient than dewdrops on the leave of grass, or the moon reflected in the water.

金谷に花を詠じ、榮花は先立つて無常の風に誘はるる After reciting the poetry of flower at Kanaya, all glory is now left with the wind of impermanence.

南楼の月を弄ぶ輩も 月に先立つて有為の雲にかくれり Those who leisurely play with the moon of southern tower, now hide in the cloud of Saṅkhāra.

人間五十年、化天のうちを比ぶれば、夢幻の如くなり Human life lasts only 50 years, Contrast human life with life of Geten, It is but a very dream and illusion.

一度生を享け、滅せぬもののあるべきか Once they are given life from god, there is no such thing don't perish.

これを菩提の種と思ひ定めざらんは、口惜しかりき次第ぞ Unless we consider this a very seed of awakening, it is a grievous truth indeed.

The figure then seemed to completely vanish as the trio could hear bells ring in the distance and one of the books behind the glass glow and shake a bit before dimming and stopping. The title on the spine reading "Atsumori" in old Japanese script.

As they proceeded further in they would hear a scream and see a man boiling to death in a pot of water while holding a child above his head.
"ISHIKAWA GOEMON SHALL NEVER FALTER!" the voice yelled, before the entire image vanished, again a book glowing and rattling before returning to normal.

The entire occurrence was strange to say the least. Finally they would see an old man at a table smiling. He looked a lot like the Headmaster of the academy. Though he had on old clothes from the 1700s and his hair looked far more dirty and gray. Looking up at the three he smiled darkly.
"Books are certainly powerful. None more so than the famous novel Kwaidan, by Lafcadio Hearn. Do you children know of it? A foreigner traveled Japan gathering various ghost tales." with that he put an extremely old copy of Kwaidan in front of the students.

"We have one of the first copies. However, due to the dark stories written within we rarely show it to students. Consider yourselves lucky...or...unlucky..i suppose. This book has bound us all in this basement and wont let us leave until we finish it's mysteries. Each of you must pick a number, 1-20, and uncover the mystery within to escape. When you complete your tale of horror, only then will the book unseal the elevator."

What was that? Ugh! Stop thinking about it! Stop thinking too deeply about it!

She flinched and pressed her backside into the back of the elevator cage. It was a brief sight but the fact it was someone watching them through the final gaps of the closing elevator triggered a flight response to back away from the door as much as possible. It was unintentional to place Roshi and Yuuki between her and the door; or if they too saw the odd pierrot at all.

Luckily the ride went more smoothly than imagined. The elevator took them down to a mysterious part of the library they all couldn't help but guess at what could be there. More old archives, a mad lab, a dungeon; possibilities were out there. The doors reopened and, surprise surprise, it was an archives section. What light was there showed the gleaming panels of the glass protection over some extremely old text. A sensible librarian would use gloves for this but doesn't look like anyone brought any.

They filed out with whoever was in front first followed by Suishoku bringing up the rear or so. The atmosphere was dim but seemed just spooky in the empty kind of way now that more light was here. It didn't last long as they were briefly stopped by an armored samurai from literally nowhere! Suishoku jumped a bit but looked on wary as all he did was mostly point his spear at them and recite some very old, cryptic words. The styling and pauses were rather poetic. As strange as his appearance and message was did he then vanish with much confusion on how to take those words if anyone could accurately remember the entire verse.

It was a lot to take in and even more with another yell and now this time they saw a man boiling alive. Was this really Goemon? That famous Goemon? Suishoku began to look less scared and more confused by this reenactment. Did...this horror house become a live history theater!? That's some real horror right there to turn into a history lecture! Just when it was almost safe to assume another historical being would come from the darkness was a man that looked oddly familiar.

"Principal Hosokawa?"

Suishoku scratched her head on him being down here. This really could become some history lecture after all if he was there. Although he seemed to pay no mind to her words as a tattered book was placed before them. A collective of ghost stories each either unnerving to down right frightening. Apparently the dark imagery of the book evoked some sort of curse in the basement that has now included the students if this was safe to assume. Suishoku turned to zombie Roshi and Yuuki for their thoughts in the time given to pick a number. Logically the number would somehow key into a story in the Kwaidan.

"Um, I guess....15?"
Suishoku spoke up. She randomly picked this one to avoid anything related to the number 4 and in hopes that maybe the later stories wouldn't be as scary as the ones in the middle of the book or the last one, number 20, which has to be the scariest one of them all. "But there's only three of us here. If we solve this then what about you?" The question came as an odd concern and mostly due to how the man looked like their headmaster with a bad clean up on a flour accident on his head. Typically it would take 20 students if everyone took a turn to complete the Kwaidan without doing multiple mysteries at once. If they finish the Kwaidan and get to leave or if the Kwaidan was ever finished then how does it effect others sealed in the basement like the man in front them?
