Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 06/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. Making friends and learning about Edo Culture is their current aim! In other news it is also time for the school dance event! Please bring your characters along!

The elevator headed on down. Was...someone out there with a clown suit? That's not the sort of thing that would really put off Roshi 'Rubber Sumo-Suit' Bento. He wasn't just anyone. To him, it was just a thing. Now...once they got down to that sub-basement, things were in for a real change of venue. The lights were dim and it seemed as though the ancient books were part of a museum...along with Indy. There was a definite atmosphere about the place.

And that was when the man in armor showed up.

He almost backed up into Suishoku, who was just a few steps behind him. The man pointed a spear at them and began to recite a piece of poetry. That was... Wait. He knew that from somewhere. It was a play. He remembered it because it was in a play, and that it's shown up on a quiz because...Nobunaga liked it. When the man - possibly THE man, himself - vanished, a book began to shake and rattle in a case.

Atsumori! That was it. Are the books...alive down here?

The artist-as-zombie would continue on with his company, only to find the gruesome fate of Goemon depicted before them, shortly before vanishing as well. Things were coming to life, alright. How did they do this? It was really good work. And then, they saw- Wait, that was the principal?! Roshi uhh...didn't recognize him, honestly. Heh heh...oops. He asked about the Kwaidan, though. Roshi loved those tales, and nodded emphatically.

The Principal wanted them to pick a number between one and twenty, to decide upon the tale they'd be working on. Suishoku picked a number at random, but then she made mention of the fact that a small group of students couldn't easily take on all twenty. A true point. That DID give one pause, didn't it? Roshi thought about it in a posture that no zombie had any right being in, and then said...

"Maybe WE are only suppose to do a few, but THEY get progress, at least."

Anyway...as a bit of a nod to his fairly-random friend, the Hatto-san, Roshi pulled out a D20 and rolled it along the table for all to see.

"Okay, I'm for elevenses."

As the students each picked a number the Headmaster smiled at Suishoku's question. It was certainly a good question but also one he had no interest in answering. Instead he politely raised his hand to silence her. At least they would have thought it was what he was doing. Slowly the area around them began to shift and change. The headmaster smiled as he vanished from their perception and then they stopped being able to see one another.

The moment the Headmaster vanished, Suishoku sighed and started rubbing her hands together like a Buddhist monk would with their prayer beads. Mostly she prayed to not get the worst one of the set. Roshi seemed to be capable of handling the scary things better since he did come dressed as a zombie for fun. Yuuki, on the other hand, has been awfully quiet through the whole venture. It was as if they weren't all there since leaving the main building for the library. She went to address the younger student when the whole area seemed to become hazy. "Yuuki?" She first called out then turned to the blurry vision of Roshi and tried to reach out for him only to have her fingers swipe through a mirage. "Roshi?" The library soon disappeared and with it were her two classmates.

--

It was like waking up from a nap. One moment she was sure to have been in a library and the next did Suishoku found herself somewhere outside. It would have been refreshing but something was off along with being colder than last remembering. She shivered a bit and turned to the boy beside her. He seemed like a nice kid so she smiled at him in greeting. Harp music could be heard not far from them. Rather than a small harp was the music from one of those grand harps! An older gentleman can be seen playing it not far from where they sat.

"His harp does sound nice so long as he doesn't mind us listening, brother," Suishoku replied while playing along. This would be the second time she had to pretend a role of having a 'brother' figure so she hoped to play along better this time. The boy's insistence came with little resistance on her part. It was cold out here and, frankly, she couldn't think of any sort of reason to not leave this log due to how cold it felt. Getting up and stretching a bit, Suishoku scratched her head as though confused of the setting before chuckling at the young man with her who spoke some very good Japanese. As he began to pull her along toward the musician, gently she tugged back as his eager pulling and picked up the pace a bit to show that she was willing to walk with him at an even pace than be dragged on over.

"Heh, you seem so eager to go, brother..." she pointed out at him to give a playful jab and trying to fish for a name. It was a bit odd to just call him brother all the time without any additional. "The man nor his home isn't going anywhere to why the rush? Do you happen to know that mister there, brother?" Rather than be tugged along by her arm, Suishoku opted to grab onto his hand instead as they walked together. This vision or whichever had to be experienced in some way but she can't just go running around blindly to find a solution to it. This isn't a speed run level.

"So goblins are the ones that eat the pine needles?" Her voice came off surprised at this fact. Whether it was true or not was another thing but it would make an interesting folk tale. "So that's why there aren't any mountains of pine needles when they shed! How nice of them! They must be pine fresh goblin folk." She soon arrived to the old man with his harp and waved to him in greeting.

"Hello mister, I hope you don't mind us. Brother and I have come to listen." Suishoku spoke up, not too loudly to disrupt his music and stood with the boy. The way he handled this large harp in just the space of the doorway was something. "He must be a professional or something," she whispered.

Uh oh. Was that a good smile or a bad one. Well, the principal held up a hand and Roshi thought it was for silence, as stated, but then he thought...

"Hey, I think he's casting a spe... Suishoku? Hey...!"

He noticed that everything was changing and that Suishoku was fadinhg from view, her hand reaching out. Roshi instinctively tried to grab it, but suddenly...well...he must've used Old Spice, because he was on a horse.

What...?

He was looking at his outstretched hand and finding it clad in armor, decent armor. He was in decent armor with no helmet or mask, and snow was hitting him in the face from a flurry that'd also materialized suddenly. A voice called out from a cabin in the distance, bidding him to come in from the cold, which felt very much real, by the way! The horse seemed to agree with the man at the door, so he obliged prodding the mount forwards.

When he was in closer, he could see the old man and an old woman properly, and a lovely young maiden who was both beautiful and blushing as their eyes met. Roshi couldn't help but smile at such a sight. He got down off of the horse and gave them a polite bow, playing the part of a charismatic young lord.

"Thank you for your hospitality. For some reason, I just didn't see the storm coming. You have a place for my horse, as well, I hope. I'd never have gotten this far without him."

While playing the role assigned to him, Roshi was racking his brains for the story which he might have been put into. He'd have it in a minute if it were famous enough. A young lord in a mountain cabin on snowy peaks is a very particular theme, after all.

"Eh? So I'm the older sibling huh?" Suishoku laughed jokingly that the boy thought the harp was magic. There was no contest that the music sounded so pleasing. His hands plucked and rolled across the harp strings that made her hum a little to the tune and other times just sway her head side to side. She began to enjoy the music greatly which put her at ease with the transitional phase of this odd library venture.

"I'm surprised you children are out in these woods. Don't you know about the goblins? If not for the pine trees, I'm sure they would eat us all."

"Hmm? I suppose we were taking a break from hiking so long." Suishoku hazard a guess of why the two were even outside in the forest at all. He did mention something odd that had her look around the forest again with seemingly little different in their surroundings. "Although, you are the second one to mention about these goblins. What do these goblins happen to look like since they're nice enough to keep the forest floor clean of mountains of pine needles? Are they a large problem around these hills?" Naturally there wouldn't be a goblin that exists in reality, not one that can dine on pine noodles in larger quantities than taking a few for tea.

The horse was not going to have a good time of it. They apologized, but the best they could do was an overhang on the far side of the cabin. Roshi wasn't super-bothered, of course. The horse was fictional. It's just that after having met a guy who really cared for them, he could appareciate the need to look after them. Nodding to the old couple, he replied...

"I'm grateful for whatever you can manage in such weather."

After all, he could hardly demand the sun and the moon from these people, right? Besides, he was not enough of a real lord and too much of a Roshi to be acting like that. He nodded as they bid him inside to warm up. A good idea, considering this all still felt like a blizzard. He nodded his thanks as he stepped inside.

He was still trying to figure out the tale, at the moment. A couple of ideas of what it might be, including that it fit the count of what he'd randomly chosen, but the Principal could've re-arranged the order on him so that he couldn't predict it like that. He would have to see what was what, for now.

So, he entered the cabin and...glorious smell and wonderous stew!

Yes, yes... Salmon IS king.

Ladies and gentlemen, a callback has been made. Still, this was some rather good food they had for being all the way out here and yet still stocked with these spices. Roshi was no food expert, but you needed money to get this kind of cooking down, right? Maybe the spices just occurred naturally here? It was, at least, somewhat possible... Although, the cabin was also well-built. How would you put it in modern-day terms? Comfortably well-off? That sounded about right. Roshi nodded to the girl as she addressed him.

"Yes, this is very good."

That was when the old man came in and informed him that the storm was very strong indeed, a long-lasting blizzard. Roshi could tell that the story was compelling him to stay, and the very real-feeling sensations OF this story would, as well.

"As you say. The weather outside is frightful. I must take your generous hospitality, and it really is a fine cabin."

This remark was made to the fact that everything here was very well done. So, as per the story, he would be staying the night. Roshi had a...pretty good idea where this was all going, what with the weather and the young and beautiful maiden, but he was reserving that for the moment in which the tale prods itself along.

Didn't we just go over that they eat pine needles? Suishoku wondered to herself as the old man started to weave a strange tale with his music. If not for the slightly ominous lyrics at all would the music still be pleasant. The rhyming did started to make her tense though. The lyrics were odd, sure, but the feeling of being watched bothered her more than anything. Her hand gripped on her brother's a bit tight when footsteps can be heard creeping from the woods.

Taking the song with a grain of salt...is he the king or the lure?

Suishoku looked back at the man, unwilling to turn away this time when hearing and sensing something from the forest creeping closer around them. It is getting dark now that it was better to not do something stupid like running off into the dark forest, however, the other option was before them.

"If you don't mind inviting us in for the night. I'm sure we won't eat you out of house and home." Suishoku replied, keeping the tone light with her words despite the tense hold she had on her brother's hand.

Something that was a little hard to contend with was that his character's perceptions and feelings did not necessarily match that of his true self. He was put into the form of a yound lord who is fatigued from journey, not himself as the person who was enjoying his Halloween. This was largely the story giving him cues and whatnot, but that they did this when he was in a different condition before coming in was a bit of a cognitive dissonance.

Still, the young lady was definitely a charming and beautiful one. He definitely agreed with that part. Enough so, that he was prepared to believe that she was at the center of it all. Now, he could be wrong, because young maidens out in the world who rarely get visitors - indeed, young nobles - out this way would naturally be overwhelmed. However, the theme appeared to be angling in this direction. He was almost certain of it when the girl came and asked permission to lie down beside him.

"I see no harm in it."

There may...or may not have been harm in it. If he was right, then his actions had to be very careful at this point. The thing about these stories was that they sometimes get re-interpretted, so even if he had the right story, his knowledge of the details could be wrong. He would have to let it play out to know for certain.

Right away once the two entered the cabin home, Suishoku looked back at the three deadbolts slid into place. They looked sturdy to keep both things outside from coming in and vice versa. The inside of the home felt warm and spacious. A good older style not found in most living settings in Edo. One whiff of the air made it clear that there was a heavy pine smell. The cabin may as well be of pine wood. A large cauldron bubbled over the fire. A brief glance into it saw the telltale bits of pine needles floating into it while also giving a heavier smell than the rest of the home.

"Lovely place," she complimented with slightly more ease to not feel hundreds of eyes on her. A singular old man was easier to keep track of along with her current 'younger' brother. Again she squeezed his hand a little as he too began to feel some fear. This cabin was cozy and all but there was something a bit off about it as though something lingered in the corners. Neither of them were given time to look around much as the two were ushered into one of the bed rooms.

"Uh, sure, it's been a long day," Suishoku replied back to the man as he left the two and just the room. Having some bit of time alone, Suishoku released her brother's hand to cross her arms to think and pace the room to check how secure it was as well as the beds if there was anything odd about the down or pillows. When checking under one of the beds, the skeleton mad her pull the covers back down quickly and went to sit on the bed that didn't have one instead.

That settles that. He's a goblin but they eat pine so what's the children even for?

She sighed and rested her chin in her hands. "Hmm," eyes turned to her scared brother. She didn't want to put blame on him for starting all this but things probably were going to end up this way even if the old man didn't come out of his home. "you know, it's been a long day. I'll go tell the old man that we'd rather get cleaned up and some rest." Getting up from the bed, she went over and gave him a hug before leaving to chat with the old man to tell him that they're not so much hungry and just tired and dirty from roaming the forest. "It'll be just for one night and we can both head home. Kay?"

"Sir? Mister..?"

Suishoku spoke up, or attempted to, but her voice died down quietly when it was clear the old man wasn't listening over the amount of noise he made. She thought it was quicker to confront the man but he toiled away in his kitchen, stirring and muttering at that huge pot of needle soup. Nothing at all creepy here as she looked at his hunched back; even waved her hand a little to see if he could sense something to turn around for but he looked oddly distracted at counting the floating bits. He muttered about hating pine needles and the disgust of them while his stomach growled more furiously in hunger. She circled around him toward the corner of kitchen to eye the set of bloodied knives since he didn't seem to pay any mind to her. The coloring doesn't look as fresh but have seen use. There's not much rope around here but it'll make do.

Taking one petty styled one, she tilted it slightly to examine the blade in her hands and the sturdy attachment placement of the handle before hiding it near her back right side of her hip and picking up the dirtied santoku style to feel its weight. It was hefty than the deba but it was mostly needed for show. Taking the two knives with her for protection, Suishoku glanced at the old man to see for any changes in his behavior before putting going forth with getting his attention better.

So far, he has been harmless and has yet to attack them so it felt wrong for her to straight up murder him despite all the creepy vibes he's giving off. Holding the larger knife loosely in her right hand, arm down at her side, she used her left arm to tap the man's back for attention. Tapping once more a bit harder if even that didn't alert him of her presence. "Sir, I couldn't help be see how busy you are. Why not let the soup be for tonight? My brother and I are mostly tired and dirty to share your meal. For taking us in, maybe allowing us a bath, I wouldn't mind helping you a little in the kitchen."
