His drift into slumberland was so lovely, so soothing...

...and his awakening was so sudden and shocking! THe last thing he remembered was thinking how perfect the girl's lyrical delivery was, and then warm and fuzzy dreams before...well...this! Everything was suddenly colder, and the cabin was in terrible disrepair! He awoke with a start, looked around, and found nobody here. No old woman, no old man, no fire, no food, and no young maiden... A quick check had revealed that his horse and personal effects were still around.

And as Roshi put his armor back on, he was dead certain of which story he was in.

Yuki-Onna.

They were women of the snow, supernatural beings who lived in a world of cold, leading isolated and often lonely lives. Tales involving them varied, so their reactions to kindness could differ. You could end up offending the demon - if they are demons at all - as easily as winning their affection. That was why he was worried about the variation of the theme, because the other thing was that Yuki-Onna could also keep you forever in their frozen world to stave off their lonelyness.

The thought of this tale weighed on Roshi as he got dressed in his things and made sure that the horse was okay. He seemed unharmed, which was good. It may be that this was the better sort of Yuki-Onna. She could have easily driven his horse away, stranding him here. Maybe...that deserved her a bit of courtesy. After all, she sheltered him for the night. She might've drummed up the storm in the first place, but rest is rest. So, for the moment, Roshi was waiting by the door. Then, he said...

"Why not come out and talk? There's no need to stay hidden."

The way he turned, Suishoku glared at him and defensively held the larger knife before her and stepped back from the fire and the old man. His grin, those nails, the more he talked to her made it more painfully clear of how hungry and frustrated he was. Understandably, there is a limit of how much of the same food a person can take all the time be it a human or a goblin.

"Ya know, you could hunt deer or mountain boar as meat options," she advised him one last time in the friendly tone of offering and even sliced at his grumbling stomach before her facial expression turned glaring at her singular opponent to match the tone of her words. Her eyes gauged his size to where she figured that so long as she have some space behind her to move above then this should be okay after sparring with Ryosuke and Carmine. She stomped her foot loudly on the wooden floorboards to make her statement clear to her hungry foe, ready to move her knife to cut at his grabbing hands. "However, I'm not going to allow you to make a meal out of myself or my brother. If you want to see the morning goblin, you will leave us be if you refuse my prior offers."

This was all some spell of some kind but she'd have to accept that this was real for now. This story of goblins, a brother not at all related by blood, this monster before her. What would happen if she were to get killed in this strange dream was something that hopefully would just end in a coma like state. That would be Suishoku's small upside take compared to disappearing outright.

While he was expecting the girl to somewhat-sheepishly come out and confess her deed as a Yuki-Onna, none of this happened. In fact, the storm seemed to be dying down. Did he get it wrong, or was any sort of confrontation just already finished? Roshi hoped he did alright with this. It wasn't long before someone else appeared, though. A villager or a hunter, by the look of it. He wanted to know, at first, what he was doing here, then saw his status and quickly apologized. Nevertheless, he wondered why he was out here, when apparently there was a village not far from here.

Roshi decided, instead, to ask a question of his own. He felt the character would.

"Tell me, who lived in this cabin previously?"

His tone indicated his own curiosity, along with the feeling that something had happened.

"Gotta expand your options than just deer," Suishoku argued with unwillingness to make such a claim just yet. Two simple deer, huh. That would require to start a bit of a farm to maintain the deal of just two deer but so easy to fail.

"But two deer can be interchangeable with fish but hard times will fall much like your situation of turning for children." Two deer a year? Does this Goblin think they just grow on trees!? Besides all this was the issue that Suishoku knew she didn't exactly belong here. It'll be hard to just take a promise when there wasn't a real clue of this village the goblin believed they came from. Rather than trying to con out of this by saying she's from another world so to speak, Suishoku tried to brush up on what little business exchanges she could do.

"If it holds off on making violence about it then I'm free to talk out a plan to get you and your kin some meat." Suishoku lowered the knife in hand with a look to the cabin windows. The sight of so many eyes made her skin crawl as much as she didn't want to think of how they were clawing at the cabin door. "But I aim to make this successful, understand? Deer take time to grow for a whole year. A time and place for it all. The real gamble here is making the village believe this exchange." She backed away toward the table and sat the knife down on its surface and motioned to the possible goblin king for a meeting away from the stew pot.

"It would be much easier for a village of faith to provide offerings than one who chooses to close its gates to monsters and enemies."

Honestly, that got him right in the heartstrings.

The old couple and their daughter had been struck down by a plague, and all because they were kind and helpful people, doing their best to tend to the sick and everything. Small wonder they would be restless spirits. They were denied the good lives they deserved for such decency. The young lord whom this character was suppose to be probably would have fallen for such a beautiful woman. It was a real tragedy, to be sure.

The villager then pointed out the three oak trees, and...the kimono that lay near the smaller of the three trees. Even the man himself didn't expect that one, though while it kind of surprised Roshi, it wasn't thematically out of the ordinary. He shook his head at the question posed.

"It isn't mine, but I have seen it before."

He went over and knelt before the tree and prayed, thanking them for their kindness. He then looked at the kimono, specifically, before inclining his head to the villager.

"How would you respond to this? The kimono of a young lady who's regrettably passed on lies before you. Is it a token offered to remind one of what might have been, or is it the cherished item of a spirit which should remain at her resting place?"

In those days, people believed the supernatural when it occurred, so asking him what omen this could possibly be was not entirely out of the ordinary.

So that was the case? Suishoku clicked her tongue at how lack of thought she was about this story. Whatever village she came from would know other wise but it's also a shame that the Goblin King didn't want to consider a longevity of their presence. Supernatural things do slowly fade away if not enough believe in them. "But why wouldn't you want a way to ensure you won't be forgotten?" She asked but had to turn quickly as the Goblin passed her for the stairs. "Hold on!" She called to him from the bottom of the stairs.

A loud scream was heard at the top, making her fear the worse to treat the king so lightly. Suishoku started up the stairs when her brother of all people came running down into her. They clumsily caught each other while retreating back to the first floor. "You okay right? He didn't hurt you?" It was comforting but really more confusing in keeping track of the Goblin's motives now that he was actively moving around the house but not so much in a threatening manner or shouting to butcher them to pieces.

A large bag was thrown at her, catching at as it hit her chest with some curious confusion of what the heck it was. "Proof, you say?" Opening up the bag a little had their eyes widen a bit in shock. Jagged fangs filled the bag that didn't look exactly human, thankfully, but not all too wolf like either. "Fangs!?"The Elite gasped at the sight. Dry and jagged razor like fangs filled the bag in a weird collection. Its numbers were like a mass of shark teeth without coming into the thought of how many mini-goblins ran about outside.

Still, this Goblin King just released her brother and now they all stood around in the cabin. Outside remained as dark as ever and in their possessions were a bag of teeth and a bloodied fruit knife. She looked a the Goblin with a clear question on her face from all this; was he seriously going to kick them out now with a bag of teeth?! They didn't even spend no more than a few hours to call it a night!

Superstition is where the right answer lay, since it was a supernatural event that was being dealt with. The morality of a person who would think in such a way would be good advice to take in these matters. The villager seemed to have one in mind, after some thought. He thought, as Roshi thought, that this was a memento. Roshi smiled.

"I believe that you are right."

Thus, he took the kimono so that he could safely bring it with him while on his horse. If the girl intended as the villager believed, then he would respect that. It seeemed fair to him, as he had personally honored the dead classmates he'd known from the Art Club. So, the question was now...how would the story move on from here?

Both students would then begin feeling strange. It was as though their vision was that of a drunken person's as the world around them began to shift and warp. The speech of the people around them was becoming hard to understand as the three students would briefly see one another, and even the headmaster, smiling, before returning to their respective stories. It was clear their tales had nearly come to an end.

However, they would see each other how they looked in their tales. Roshi in full samurai armor, Suishoku in peasant clothing, and Yuuki in old Japanese woodmason's clothing.

(OOC: For those curious. Yuuki had "Yuki-Onna". Suishoku had "Hi-mawari". Roshi had "The Story of Aoyagi".)

Because this seemed like the end of the tale, Roshi could definitely say that this was not Yuki-Onna. He must've gotten it wrong, throne by the act of the storm and such, because in truth...it seemed that the spirit of the young lady merely wished the company of someone for a while, not for the rest of their life. As he took the kimono, things were fading now, which just left him...

...well, not exactly back. Not yet. There was a vision of the world in the real, and of the others around him, but they were different now. While Roshi had himself been decked out in this ornate samurai armor, Suishoku might've been more akin to the attire of the villager he'd been speaking to, and perhaps dimilar would be Yuuki's clothing. He couldn't place the distinction just yet, but it seemed familiar, somehow.

He didn't realize it had something to do with the tale that he thought he was in. Roshi smiled at Suishoku, if nothing else than to show that the story hadn't harmed him...and just generally to be glad that she too was perfectly fine. Would they shift back now, or would they be transitioning on? How far would the Headmaster be taking them with this?

“Not at all,” she replied as the first offer of staying the night wouldn’t come to fruition since they were foing to be his meal somehow. The impression of the King’s off slyness and kindness to let them leave would be at that. They will leave. She took the bag of teeth and her brother’s hand for good measure as the door opened for them to the dark night. If they were to deliver this message to their home then it is good to think that they will be okay for the time being. “Let’s go...go..home?” Her voice seemed to fail her as her head began to feel like it was spinning and pulled like taffy. Her brother shouted something but it was gargled up. Not even his hand felt all there anymore when the cabin structure all melted away.

It was hard to feel anything, if her brother was there, the goblin’s fruit knife, and the bag of fangs. Suishoku ‘s head just felt like splitting as newer faces started to appear from the murk. Were they Yuuki? And was that Roshi? She’d normally comment how ridiculous but rather cool their attire was but not like this. It barely even registered to her that her own clothes have taken a turn for peasantry. Their faces were there but their clothes were clearly not the jackets and zombie attire they entered the library with! Even the Headmaster was seen fleetingly as she once again tried to feel for those smiling faces before her. Was it over now or just another mirage?

All three students had now woken from their illusions and appeared to return to the normal, temperature controlled environment of the Edo Bugei Library's basement.
"Congratulations. All three of you managed to survive your tales." and with that a loud ding echoed through the room as the elevator door opened back up for them.

Unsure fo what to make of that sort of vision, Suishoku blinked in a daze as her brother had to dragged her out of the goblin's home. It wasn't till they were outside again in the dark forest was Suishoku's senses back on higher alert once feeling the many eyes of the goblin children staring at them.

"B-big sister, we will be alright, right? You don't think they will really eat us do you?"

A wolf howled somewhere as she held onto her brother and the bag of goblin fangs. "O-Of course! What sort of courtesy is it for someone to remove their messengers?" She replied with certainty while she glanced aside in wonder if the goblin is only letting them go under those conditions or that maybe she annoyed him too much to be eaten. She allowed the boy to lead the way as she looked up now and then from the ground for any signs of wolves.

Up ahead were some lights in the distance and shouting, encouraging their pace to quicken. Suishoku wasn't sure how the voices calling ahead knew but waved back to them as her brother yelled more enthusiastically to see their family.

"MOM! DAD! BIG BROTHER NATHANIEL!"

His hand slipped away from hers as her pace started to slow down to quizzically wonder who Nathaniel was. The question soon slipped by her as much as the world began to fade away once more where the lights and colors all blurred with her brother's back into a complete pallet mess.

"Congratulations. All three of you managed to survive your tales."

Suishoku rubbed her eyes a bit and pinched her cheeks a bit to find the library appearing once more. The headmaster congratulated them on surviving their ghost stories to some degree. "We...just had to live through it to the end?" Apparently that seemed to be the condition of choice as Suishoku patted herself down to check if she was back in her own clothes before looking to the others. From behind them was the elevator as well all open and awaiting for their boarding.

"Heh...we made it, I guess,"
Suishoku greeted Roshi and Yuuki in disbelief that what happened actually happened. Once everyone seemed to be in okay order, there wasn't much more for them to do in this basement. Although, she did give Roshi a look in wonder if he was going to do another haunted story. That's 17 stories left in the Kwaidan if multiple turns were allowed then it would be divided up into six chances with two more stories left over. If neither Roshi or Yuuki wanted to continue, if they were allowed to, Suishoku would just as gladly return to the elevator to see if their haunted night has ended...or not.
