Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

They had been the first to arrive. A large group of students who had signed up and yet no mission had been given and no names called. It was strange, wrong somehow. As the students stood around the entire group of third years, all dressed like zombies and ghouls slowly marched forward. With one large step foward, in unision, they yelled.
"Todo Shinsuke" as the sound of a guillotine falling could be heard over the speakers.
"Hisashi Kato" then another step forward, and the sound of another guillotine falling.
"Bou Kire!" then the final guillotine fell. All of the students just stared at the three and kept slowing walking forward.
"GET OUT!" they said in unison with each step forward. Then finally all of the teachers and third years screamed at once.
"GO TO THE LIBRARY AND GET OUT!" the yelling even came over the school's loud speakers.

As the yelling happened the doors to the school building opened violently as a cold wind swept through and whispered all three of their names, followed by the sound of children giggling and running away. The three would have to brave the cold and go towards the school's library. It wasn't far away, but it was quite cold out.

Kire folded his arms, he wasn't impressed by the pageantry of the whole thing. Third years just trying to show off. Well he wouldn't let them get under his skin. He'd barely put forth a token effort into a costume. He wore his casual clothes under one of his thicker jackets. But he had wrapped his face in bandages that he'd had left over. He would just say he was the invisible man. When the third years finally made their move, it was a welcome relief. He just wanted to see Kono-sensei and then get somewhere warm. If there was any positive side to this, he was in the first group to be sent off. That meant he could get an early night after all was said and done.

Unlike the chanting third years, the doors swinging open sent shivers down his spine. This was not due to any fear, but because it was far too cold. For a guy who thought seventy degrees was jacket weather, it was positively arctic. He hugged his coat tighter around his shoulders and walked out the door, shoulders hunched. "Library, right. Kire adjusted his sunglasses and looked for the other two that the third years had announced. "Hey, Bou Kire, let's get this thing over with."

This whole experience was already a little unnerving for the diplomat in training. All of the decor was quite macabre, even if it were all fake items meant to scare or provoke uneasiness at the least. He wasn't used to the idea of something other than harvest festivals and moon viewing around this time of year. Both of those kinds of events were calm and fun, compared to the sight of bodies hanging in windows and a bunch of undead approaching the brave souls in the main building. It didn't help that he didn't spot anyone he knew besides his sister nearby. Familiarity would probably have eased his nerves somewhat. Waiting around did nothing but raise the tension and allowed doubts to linger about the nature of this gathering. What if something really were wrong, and not even those who'd planned things knew about it?

The undead were simply older students of course. Such a realization helped him to calm down a little, but the wind brought the panic right back up. Hearing one's name being carried on the wind in such a manner had a way of raising the hairs on the back of your neck. He too was clutching his jacket around him, partially to ward off the cold and partially to make himself a smaller target for whatever was out there. One of the other students in his group announced himself, so Shinsuke walked over and nodded to him. At least they'd be in a group - safety in numbers was a reassurance in the face of the unknown.

"Todo Shinsuke," he introduced himself, "As soon as we're all here, let's head out.. and.. stick together. Just in case."

As Hisashi found himself gazing upon the various third years draped in costume as well as their rather tasteless attempts to scare the other students, he found himself fairly unamused. He didn't really have much experience with the celebration for some few years, but he thought it was supposed to be a lot more fun than it was now. Letting out a sigh, he simply shook his head and took a moment to adjust the patch covering his eye. Something told him it was going to be a long day.

Draped in his casual clothing, which by most standards wasn't actually that casual at all, Hisashi found himself resisting the urge to shake as the doors quickly slid open. He didn't seem certain what was going on just yet, but he figured all he could really do was press forward. Evidently though, he would not proceed alone. Shifting his sight to look upon the pair of students who introduced themselves, he moved a hand to rub the back of his neck awkwardly before stepping forward to make himself known. "Kato, Hisashi. First year. Please treat me well." he explained with a small smile gracing his features. It wouldn't be a moment before he went to follow the others out, glancing around outside as they emerged into the cold.

Shinsuke seemed the only one even slightly bothered by the happenings within the school building. Something the third years took strong notice of as the group seemed to quickly shuffle out the door of the main school building. The moment all three left the building's doors would slam violently behind them as the wind seemed to whisper the group's names and blow towards the darkened school library.

They would notice just how dark the campus was. In the distance the city of Edo looked completely normal, but on campus it was almost pitch black in every building that wasn't the dorms. It was amazing how much of the campus had been rebuilt after the war in the spring. It was almost as though the war hadn't happened. Yet it would be impossible to tell right now.

The walk would be extremely daunting. While nothing would yell or jump out at them, the cold Edo night had a bitter chill to it as the group walked. The library itself was a large, western looking building with a large main door. Now the question was how the group would enter, and in what order.

Well, the gang was all here. What kind of gang was still up in the air. From the look of his two forced partners, Kire felt it would be a very pathetic gang indeed. Some pretty boy, probably a noble kid, and a guy dressed as an upscale yakuza. Still, Kire generally looked like a thug all the time so what right did he have to complain. Maybe there was some famous one eyed dude that he'd never heard of. Would not be all that surprising. "Well," he looked between the two of them, "that's introductions sorted, I guess."

So maybe he wasn't being very polite tonight either. But he was cold. Kire pulled the jacket tighter around himself and hunched his shoulders against the wind. Miserable, and it seemed he would be leading the way, meaning whatever nasty prank or jump scare the third years tried would be on him primarily. It would be hard to impress sensei when he fell over in panic. On the plus side, he didn't think he was the sort to punch or act violent when surprised so if she jumped out, he wouldn't have to worry about hitting her. That would be embarrassing too. "Stupid event to do now, ought to be during the summer." he muttered.

Moving a hand to try brushing his arm slightly as he felt a shiver creeping up it, Hisashi looked around briefly. He let out a sigh as he wondered for what purpose this all served even still. Perhaps a test of courage for all the students who had put their names down on the paper. It had seemed like the other two were at least semi-aware of this as well as they moved without worry to their destination. Along the way, Hisashi found himself unable to resist turning his head so he could properly look upon the two he would be bound with for this activity. The first of the two didn't seem to hold much motivation, but then the young man thought maybe today was simply an off day for him. The other seemed fairly standard as far as he could tell without much to standing out from how little time they'd shared. It would be interesting to see how the three worked together.

As Hisashi found himself following to the left of Kire, he didn't seem to mind walking through the dark nor the cold. He simply rolled down his sleeves and tried his best to shrug the weather off. It wasn't quite like winter had given her worst this day so they could at least be content with that. Idly tapping the digits of his left hand against his leg, the young man found himself pondering before looking to the others. "So, what do we think is awaiting us at this library? I doubt any of us would be afraid of books, correct?" he questioned modestly, uncertain if they might have had a better understand of the situation than him.

A group would help make this all a little more bearable. That's what Shinsuke had thought initially, even going so far to hold out hope that he'd get a good band of people to get through the night with. As they walked toward the library he took a better look at the guys he was paired with. Shinsuke shivered a little due to the cold of the autumnal evening, glad at least it wasn't raining as well. Both of these guys were a little scary in their own right if you just went by outward appearance.

One seemed disinterested in.. anything, really. His expression didn't relay anything other than a bit of detachment - that could potentially reflect danger lurking. Or just lack of sleep or something equally mundane. That other guy was dressed in a manner that suggested his extracurricular activities were not the sort to be discussed in polite company. Then again Shin reminded himself not to judge people by their appearance alone. Just on a night where there was creepy stuff afoot, he was a bit more on edge. Neither seemed to be as odd once they spoke, though, so that was reassuring.

"In the library? Well, the only thing scary there normally would be overdue fees," Shinsuke offered a poor man's attempt at a joke, complete with awkward chuckle as he ran a hand through his hair nervously. His pace picked up a little as he moved to keep pace with the other two. He figured maybe it was better not to let the unknown scare him when it came to other students. Probably plenty of scaring to go around in the library soon enough.

With another nervous glance at the structure ahead he announced, "Hey, why don't I step in first? I'm curious to see what they've done with the place.."

It seemed it would be Kire and Shinsuke that entered first, with Kato following behind them. The moment the students entered the library something felt off. The atmosphere was different than the school building. In the school building they had tried to make it seem scary but it was obvious who the third years and staff happened to be. Inside the library, however, the air felt cold and still. It felt like no one had even enter the building in at least a decade. Barely any of the lights had been turned on, and the large doors to the building didn't slam shut or anything. In fact the wind seemed to hang them open.

To the left of the students was a reception desk, and in front of them the familiar study tables with rows and rows of shelves behind them. Yet all of it was dark and seemed dusty. Even a few spiders could be seen crawling on the tables. It was then that they felt it. Something strange was watching them. As they turned to look they would see small boy with pale skin and black hair just staring at them from behind the reception desk, kicking his legs a bit and looking bored but happy to see them.
"I'm so glad to finally see you three! I'm glad you are here! welcome! I haven't seen a guest in ages!" he exclaimed. His clothing seemed to be from the Nara period.

"They are waiting upstairs you know. You should hurry. Hurry. Hurry. Hurry. They are waiting! go!" he exclaimed and pointed towards the staircase that went up to the second floor of the library.
"COME ON COME ON COME ON!" he yelled before getting up and running away from the group and up the stairs.

As the child ran up the stairs the group's vision would seem to get a bit hazy and then clear up to show no traces of the boy what so ever. Though as they approached the stairs going up, they also heard a whisper from the elevator going to the school basement and another boy, his body covered in thick scabs as he held up the cut off heads of three samurai.
"Hey, Hey, don't go up that way. Why not come downstairs instead?" as he opened his mouth he was clearly missing most of his teeth.

Well, if the noble kid wanted to put his pride on the line, that was fine too. Kire slowed down and let Todo lead the way. Probably be better that way, you didn't want to do too much to a noble, although, alternatively you may focus on them in this time when everyone has a mask and nobody can blame you for it. Either way, the focus was on humiliating or scaring somebody who wasn't Kire. Unpleasant, yes, unkind, certainly, selfish, blatantly, but Kire didn't mind, just so long as he didn't screw up his chance to impress Kono-sensei.

Entering the library was a bit disappointing, no jump scares, no anything. He looked around unconcerned. He didn't even notice the kid behind the desk until he talked. Kire shuddered. They got a kid involved in this stupid game? Well this was probably supposed to be the ghost, or a ghost. He'd expected it would be an older student in some dumb costume leading them through the haunted maze or whatever they'd done to the library. Whatever, a kid wasn't so bad. He shrugged. "Well, guess we better follow him." he said as he started walking and abruptly stopped when seeing the other one.

The new one looked like he could have used some of the bandages that Kire had used for his costume. He swallowed and turned his head away. "Not a fucking chance." he replied. That little bastard was genuinely unsettling. Maybe he'd underestimated this whole thing. That was not a good sign.

What they'd done with the place was simple in concept but turned out to be rather spooky overall. He shivered as soon as he set foot inside thanks to an uncomfortably chilly atmosphere. Dread seemed to hang in the air here as if they were pilgrims in an unholy land. Somehow it felt as if they were intruding upon the domain of something hidden. Dark and hidden away on the campus and only unleashed on this dark night. Without realizing it fully Shinsuke had quickly begun to fall right into the sort of mindset he'd been pretending not to have. Hard to act tough when the whole place seemed threatening without so much as a hint as to the nature of that threat.

He was expecting something the happen, but didn't know from what quarter it'd come. Suddenly (for him) he heard the voice of a boy - this made Shinsuke jump in surprise, noticeably affected by the unexpected company. It felt silly considering the kid was simply excited for company. No words came from his mouth as he tried to process the boy's appearance.. and then sudden disappearance! One moment he was bounding up the steps and the next he seemed to have vanished! Shinsuke peered at the stairs, then the area around them to see if the child had just ran off in a different direction.

Which is when he saw the horrifying child covered in wounds and holding something. Were those.. heads? Shinsuke's eyes were wide in shock at the sight, already getting severely freaked out by just their first two encounters. Kire's response was blunt and vulgar but summed up Shinsuke's thoughts precisely. Though perhaps Shinsuke was less eloquent in that he let at a frightened yelp before shaking his head and slowly backing away from the new spirit (or whatever it was). As soon as he felt his foot touch the base of the steps he looked to his companions.

"Well.. um.. let's... " his eyes glanced back to the elevator kid, "RUN!" And with that, the heir to the Todo household tore up the stairs in a desperate bid to escape what was probably just a student in makeup. So dignified.

As they had entered the building, Hisashi found himself surveying his surroundings. He hadn't quite known what he should be expecting from the people who were organizing this whole deal. It came as a surprise that the staff and later years had so much time to organize this whole event. For the most part, the young man was under the impression that teaching classes or doing missions would consume most of their time. Yet he couldn't say they didn't put in work to make things festive. He found himself glancing over his two compatriots in this strange game and wondered how they were faring inside. He doubted they were particularly worried about the events. If he remained mostly unperturbed, they must had been like steel inside with them being the prestigious students of this place.

Suddenly his attention was taken by the appearance of the young boy. Hisashi merely blinked a few times before spotting his fellow jump in surprise. It then dawned on him maybe he just was better at handling small scares better than the others. His attention shifting back to the kid as he explained himself, Hisashi moved a hand to cover up a sheepish smile forming on his lips. It seemed like even the family of the people attending were interested in helping it. It was pretty interesting to hear see the enthusiasm of the young man, almost catching it himself.

Coming to the steps and gripping the railing of the stairway, he suddenly blinked a few times before glancing down at the young boy which attempted to draw them the other way. At first, Hisashi found himself unsure what to think as he looked over the scarred body of the child. Still being polite as ever though despite the unsightly visage, he mustered a small smile. As he nodded with his company, he opened his mouth to speak before he found himself caught off guard by the sudden enthusiasm Shinsuke has shown to get going. Clearing his throat, he gave a slight wave to the young boy. "Apologies, it appears we'll be going elsewhere." he explained in a rather kind tone before pacing up the stairs to try catching with the runaway.

"Not a fucking chance." was Kire's direct response to the young boy in the downstairs elevator. Pouting a bit the boy looked at the other two as Shinsuke quickly dashed upstairs and Kato responded with a polite
"Apologies, it appears we'll be going elsewhere." the boy just shrugged a bit and violently threw the three heads against the back wall of the elevator as three loud "OUCH!" could be heard before the elevator doors slammed shut.

As the three made it upstairs they would find what appeared to be a sea of book shelves. The library had been slightly re-designed after the battle with the Ikko, but for the most part the back of the second floor had always had rows and rows of reference books from arts and crafts, history, and geography. Waiting for them as a rather demonic looking book keeper. A tall female with light red skin and two long horns from her forehead. A slightly revealing but also incredibly beautiful Kimono. Her nails had been painted red and black, and she had on golden librarian's glasses and what appeared to be a thin, moving demon's tail slowly moving behind her. In many ways it looked like Kono-sensei, but in many ways not.

"WELCOME TO OUR LIBRARY!" the voice, far more demonic than Kono-sensei's voice was known to be, yelled out as suddenly fire shot out from between some of the book shelves before they seemed to rise up and re-arrange themselves before softly landing back down behind her.
"We have split the upper level into five section. You must find a red gem, and a blue gem. Why you ask? Why, so you can leave of course!" and with that thick spider webs full of extremely poisonous spiders now filled the steps the group had come up. They wouldn't have noticed before but to their left was a blue pedestal and to the right a red pedestal, both looking as though they could fit a large gem the size of an orange.

"The five areas are this central area here, the study balcony that looms over the first floor, the AV room, the reference room, and of course the private study rooms. I suggest splitting up and searching."

Kire followed the noble kid up the stairs, not as fast but with as much desire to be away from the distressed looking child with the creepy heads. He also made sure that he didn't look at the kid either. Didn't need those images in his head any more than they ha already been. Fortunately, upstairs was a lot less horrifically traumatizing and there was a special treat. Sure she was in a disguise or something but there was no way Kire wouldn't recognize Kono-sensei. She was gorgeous. Red was definitely a good color on her.

Kire smiled a bit of a brainless smile. He was well distracted and already forgot the kid downstairs, heck, he was almost to forgetting the whole reason he was in here in the first place. Fortunately she was there to remind him and he was paying total attention to what she said. A red gem and blue gem, that would be difficult. Like a needle in a haystack unless there was some trick to it, like a riddle or a challenge. Kire adjusted the bandages around his face. If he was in the right state of mind, he would have stood against splitting up their group, but Kono-sensei had suggested it and her ideas were always good ideas.

"Yeah, ok. Split up." he said. "But...do you have one of the gems?" She was the red oni and if this was a thing related to the concept of red and blue oni, maybe she would. Maybe she'd give it to him because he was so impressive. But if there was a blue one, maybe there'd be a second Kono-sensei too. Wouldn't that be lovely? His head was quickly turning to mush.

Shinsuke's hopes had been that things couldn't get much freakier than an injured child holding severed heads. Every step he'd taken up the stares had been filled with anxiety and fear, but also that hope for something less hair-raising. Nope. In fact if anything the fact that Kono-sensei was there... and was a demon.. was a bit scarier than a murderous ghost. He had to walk things back a step or two before he freaked out too much in response. A demon didn't necessarily mean evil, right? Sure she might command fire and possibly the bookshelves themselves, but this was a test that was all.

A test to see if they could escape from being trapped by a web of poisonous spiders. Wonderful! Shinsuke wondered just what else might be waiting for them in the various areas that the oni Kono-sensei (Koni-sensei?) mentioned in her surprisingly deep voice. The hairs on the back of his neck had risen up the moment such speculation began in his mind. This was not going to be an easy test for him - not in the least because it was to be completed by splitting up. He looked around the dark, forboding upper level of the library and took a deep breath.

"Okay, so.. we split up.. but if there are only 2 gems and there are 5 locations.." he thought aloud, "Then.. um.. are we on a time limit? We should know if we have to hurry or if we can be cautious.."
