Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 7/10/2017 A blood red summer has come. As the Edo Bugei students finish facing off with the ikko forces all across the nation a massive steel ship floats towards Edo Harbor. The final battle between the Ikko Ikki rebels and the Edo Bugei students is about to begin. The lingering question now, just how much of Edo will be left standing once the battle ends?

It was a black room. But it wasn't a room as there was no floor, ceiling or walls. There was light but no source. And then there was Nao. Standing alone. 'Hello?' He called out, his voice echoing into the nothing.

Yes? A voice responded, with no tone, or sound, enough to send shivers down Nao's spine.

'Where am I?' He asked, looking around for the source of the voiceless voice, but there was no culprit.

You aren't anywhere.

'But what does that mean?' Nao retorted, quickly.

You are No Where. You are not dead. You are not alive. You are... somewhere in between.

'So... I'm not alive. Am I dying?' Nao asked the voice, worry creeping.

Do you want to be?

'I do not.'

Then dying you are not. At least, not yet.

'Am I going to die..?'

Eventually. Everyone does.

'Fantastic... So, who are you?'

I am nothing. Though, what that means to each person is something different.

'What am I supposed to do?'

Do whatever it is you wish. That is, after all, all you ever seem to do. You sleep when you are tired, ignore work when you don't want to do it, and kill a man when you feel it necessary.

Nao paused then, feeling insulted by the truth of those voiceless words as he continued looking around into the void around him. 'I wish... I wish to stop it all. I don't want to fight, but I don't want anyone else fighting either.' There was a long pause afterwards, where the other speaker didn't answer for the longest time.

Then all you need to do is open your eyes.

A gasp as the unconscious scion awoke, and sat straight up, cold sweat covering his body. The immediate movement was an immediate regret as pain overwhelmed his face and made him lay back down. He didn't know where he was, or how long he had been unconscious... he waited for his vision to clear to see where he was.

Music is here!

The fight was over. As Suishoku rushed out of the south gate she would see a disgusting sea of blood and gore. In the distance a few shinobi on horseback flying Uesugi and Naoe clan banners rapidly approached towards the eastern gate. Inside the team was broken. Yuna had walked back to the city badly burnt. Mirai was still breathing hard. Nobuyori was on his back with his eyes closed, attempting to forget about what he had just seen. Nao was barely conscious, his badly damaged weapon carried back into the city by six samurai. Meanwhile the sounds from the Eastern side of the city began to die down and no more explosions went off.

General Naoe was passed at as some of his men sat around him slowly taking off their thick armor. Though even as they took the armor off they kept sword and spear close in case another group of Ikko should suddenly show up. With the battle over the green armored Maeda elite samurai started lowering the large guns they had brought and took off the thick helmets that adorned the heavy armor. Suishoku would recognize them as the men she had seen meeting with Lord Maeda. A man with purple armor and a golden Naoe emblem on his chest looked at the assembled group. First looking at the group guardian General Naoe. It was obvious he was the Naoe's second in command.
"Please carry General Naoe to the nearest emergency vehicle. I imagine it should arrive soon. Maeda soldiers guard the bugei students and villagers. Given the quick resolution to things in the East I'm going to go that way and speak with Lord Maeda." at the same time the students would get a series of texts reporting that no more Ikko troops seemed to be in the area and that all students should return to the Meada clan's castle. Though how many of the students would actually read the message who knows.

Either way multiple vehicles would soon arrive to help carry the Edo students back to the castle. Various doctors would look over every student as well as try their best to help Suishoku with what damaged samurai they could. Over all it would be about three hours before the students would be fully taken care of and taken inside the Maeda clan's castle. They students would be guided to the top of the castle. It was a small, four room area. Right now they stood in a hallway with three rooms around them. One to the left, one to the right, and one directly in front. Two of the elite Maeda clan samurai handing them formal robes spoke.
"We politely ask you change. We can't allow you to rest just yet. Our lord Maeda would like to speak with you. Please remove your bloodied outfits before entering the lord's meeting chambers. Men to the right and women to the left to change."

The doors re-opened for more survivors of the battle outside. A wave of death passing with them and all its scents of earth, smoke, and blood. It left a metallic taste in her mouth as she gripped her relic tightly and slammed a fist against the gate as people passed. Outside was nothing but pure carnage that she didn't even need her relic to sense that there would hardly be any life to be found out there, be it the enemy or one of their own. No one she could use to help the people of Kanazawa. It's sickening, Suishoku pressed her fist and relic against the gate while grinding her molars. Her tolerance was a bit steadfast of the sight, in no part thanks to a horrible mission set up in the past, but she couldn't stand there staring at it for too long.

Turning away, the gates closed once more as Suishoku leaped back into her duties of healing. Without any more gauze to close wounds, she resorted to taking a scalpel and started using her relic for what it was meant for. She summoned a pool in the small cup and went to work to where the critically wounded are, helping to cut and remove shrapnel bits and dabbing the flat of the knife upon the wound to seal it to get a head start on it before moving on like an assembly line to treat the more problematic ones before passing them off to another medic or send them loaded into an emergency vehicle. Her phone somehow buzzed but in the feverish work, she ignored it to check when there was more time to.

Multiple vehicles arrived causing many who were aware of their presence to raise their heads for what meaning they brought. Suishoku wiped some sweat with her uniform sleeve as even more doctors and relief aid came from them. A very welcomed sight which eased many of their strains. Her speed tactic sped things along by a little bit and got her making more rounds during those three hours. At one point, she went to service Yuna and Nao and started to work on them. Their battered bodies was telling of a far difficult battle had taken place. It made her feel guilty for taking a detour to return that maybe, they wouldn't have gotten the way they are now. Despite her work on them, neither Yuna or Nao would be leaving this place without some physical scars. The hours droned on in seemingly no end in sight after Suishoku passed Yuna and Nao to college student to check after their wounds if any started reopening in due part of their low supplies to spread out.

Toward the tail of of those seemingly endless three hours Suishoku would find Mirai and Nobu near each other. She had worked her way through the crowd to find them and could only give an empty tug of a smile to see that neither of them were harmed too greatly. A soiled Azai coat hung about Mirai which made it easy for her to guess what may have happened. Despite seeing the two she held more concerns about, Suishoku couldn't decide whether to apologize, thank, pray, cry, or hug them both. The mix of emotions left her standing wordlessly in gratitude that they're still alive with her at all yet, seeing that they were alive and well, her head lowered to a bow before walking away to return to her duties. Just because she found her friends to be alive, there was no stopping to savor the moment for long. Her feet dragged her off to tend to the wounded.

The three hours that ensued ended without ever knowing it had been that long. Her body kept wanting to work and get more people patched up despite the sweat running down her neck and knees staring to get sore from constant kneeling to standing and back to kneeling again. It would take some Maeda officials to round the students up to take them for a summons by Lord Maeda. It was an uncomfortable ride to share with her fellow students who took a more direct role in the front lines so Suishoku kept to herself but monitored them all the same if their health was okay. To be put generally about it, they were worn out mentally and physically.

They were brought to the castle, as hard as it was to argue, and led like cattle to a dressing room. She raised a brow at this but accepted that it would be nice of a change out of the clothes they currently wore now. Suishoku sighed, knowing the formality of this, but still had to slip her thoughts upon accepting the robes. "If we must." Did they honestly have time for this? But, well, anything to feel somewhat cleaner even if it is a change of clothes. Her arms carried the outfit presented to her, a green and purple set of formal clothing, and headed on first into the changing room with little argument. "I'll help if you need it to dress," she spoke to Yuna and Mirai. From the sounds of it, Suishoku started to think that maybe the worst has past.

RPC POST

It all happened so quickly. In the middle of the battlefield every second felt like months. It was hell with all of the explosions and ikko monks coming towards him but now that the battle was over the entire thing couldn't have lasted nearly as long as he felt it did. Nobuyori took as much time as he could just to relax and try to regain his strength before the battle was officially announced as a victory and the students would be summoned to the Maeda clan's castle. As he looked at the others it was clear that he wasn't the only one that had fought hard. Everyone looked tired and exhausted. As he was handed robes to change into he couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed. He had wanted to appear before the Maeda in a formal capacity, but not exhausted and with his clan coat covered in blood. His naginata was taken away by a Maeda clan smith, but he had at least grabbed his pack of ceremonial talismans, in other words his relic, from his jacket before that would be taken away from Mira for what Nobuyori could only assume was cleaning.

As the students got asked to go to separate rooms to change Nobuyori paused for a few minutes to look at Suishoku. She looked tired as well. Though she also looked alive, which is what mattered to him. She was safe, and so was her city. While they hadn't fought on the same battlefield they had fought to protect the same place and that was all that mattered. Walking off with Nao Nobuyori unfolded the robes given to him by the Maeda. It appeared to have a small, golden Azai crest on the back of it in spite of being the usual green and brown of the Maeda clan. It seemed the Maeda understood that they had a prince guarding their city and wanted to be as polite as hardened warriors could be. Stripping off his sweat covered clothing he felt terrible that he didn't have proper cologne or a longer shower to take before attending the clan's lord.

Being far too aware of Nao's fight Nobuyori would make sure his likely half dead companion was alright before returning back to the central room. Doing up his golden hair as best he could, he had on brown robes with beautiful green trim and a golden Azai crest on the back, though much smaller than he honestly would have preferred. He was ready for whatever may come next.

The rest passed in what seemed to be a blur. The throb in her arm worsened the further they got from the battlefield; now that they were safe and the thunder of the battle was no more there was nothing to distract her from the pain and she felt it more keenly.

All she focused on was getting out, getting away. The further away she was from those gates the better. She didn’t dare to look behind her as she passed through them. She didn’t ever want to see that again, though the scene was seared into her memory and forgetting it might not be as easy as simply refusing to look back.

Mirai looked at her feet as she walked, gripping the robe around her arm tightly, barely looking up even as she was ushered about to go this way, wait there; at some point a doctor or nurse of some kind (Mirai wasn’t really paying attention) came and dressed her wound hurriedly, rushing to get through as many injured soldiers as possible in as little time as they could. Mirai mumbled a thanks which the nurse responded to with nothing more than a tired nod of acknowledgement.

They’d taken Nobuyori’s robe away - she hoped it would be returned to him, she’d feel bad if he didn’t get it back because of her - when her wound had been dressed, but she didn’t have the time to dwell on it because they were soon packing everyone into vehicles to carry them away to - she wasn’t paying attention to that either, actually.

Soon enough their destination was revealed though - Maeda castle. Ordinarily Mirai would have been wowed by being inside the castle of such an important clan, but as it was she wished she was somewhere else, maybe curled up on her futon at her home back in Kitakyushu… Mirai blinked. Wishing to go home? That was new for her. How strange.

Mirai had noticed that Suishoku was there, and indeed her chest felt a little lighter simply due to knowing the older girl was there, but she kept quiet because she had no idea what she was supposed to say. She wanted to sing with relief that Suishoku was OK, she wanted to greet her, hug her, but somehow it didn’t feel right to be cheerful after everything that had just happened, and she just didn’t have the energy to muster up a proper greeting anyway.

Suishoku spoke to her and Yuna first, though, as they went to get changed: "I'll help if you need it to dress."

How grateful she was for Suishoku. Now that Suishoku had started talking first she didn’t have to think of something real to say - she could just reply - and that was such a relief because it meant that now she was talking to someone and that was something that felt moderately normal again. Looking up, Mirai attempted to give Suishoku a smile but it came out looking half-hearted. “Thank you, Suishoku.” Her voice sounded weary.

Stripping down out of her current, dirtied clothes would prove to be a harder task than putting on clean ones; her current clothing was wet and sticky with mud and blood and who knew what else which made it unpleasant and difficult to get out of with only one arm that she could move freely without causing herself excess pain. By comparison slipping into the fresh, clean robe provided would be a breeze.

Mirai wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do after changing so once she was changed she would wait to follow Suishoku - she at least seemed to always have some idea of what she was doing.

~NPC POST~

Music is here!

While Nobuyori attempted to change it would become clear that Nao was still down for the count. He likely wouldn't remember walking into the changing room with the help of Nobuyori and the Maeda samurai. As Nobuyori reported Nao being unconscious some medics quickly came in to take the boy away. This mainly only left himself, Suishoku, a very badly hurt Yuna, and Mirai to meet with the Meada lord. The head of the Maeda was still in full combat gear save for his removed helmet. As the four students entered an attendant quickly whispered something to him about Nao's condition.
"I see. We will keep the boy here in the castle then. Someone who helped save our home deserves the best protection we may offer." he said as the attendant bowed and hurried off to relay the orders to the others.

General Naoe also wasn't present. Nor many any of the Uesugi/Naoe troops. in the room with the students stood two samurai at the door who hadn't joined in the fight, and that was it. The four of them, the head of the Maeda, and two Maeda guardsmen.
"You five did more than I wished you had to, but also far more than I could have hoped. Ms. Yuna, due to your strength most of the ikko focused on you, allowing my men and the Uesugi to fight them on more even terms instead of being outnumbered. I'm sorry you had to act as such a decoy, but I'm certainly thankful for it." he said with serious eyes.
"Ms. Yuubae Suishoku. You rushed back to your home. You have defended your home and proved yourself as a citizen of this land, as a Scion, as a a student of the Bugei, and as someone who makes me clan proud to have in our lands. Thank you." then he turned to Mirai.
"I believe you helped keep the others calm, and did your best to aid my men. I thank you for it." he didn't want to be overly harsh to a girl only half standing. She had suffered an injury in combat, and shed blood for the sake of the Maeda. He was not about to reprimand her lack of fighting spirit. Not even a Maeda samurai was that cruel. Finally he turned towards Nobuyori.
"A Prince of Omi, come to help another province that you don't even have heavy trade with. I imagine it must have been difficult to not run back to your own castle to make sure it would be protected. Rest easy, my men have called Omi Province. No Ikko uprisings have been reported. I appreciate you coming here, and I will have many talks with your father about it later. Old drinking buddies he and I, once upon a time." Nobuyori of course would look a bit taken back, not having known this.

"I understand normally you all would rush back to Edo. However I would appreciate if you rested a bit. You have all fought hard an-" it was then that the students phones started rapidly flashing messages with images of a large foreign ship approaching Edo. A serious of messages came down about Edo under attack shortly and all students needing to hurry to Edo as quickly as possible. The Lord of the Maeda couldn't read the texts but he understood what the flashes meant. He had of course attended Bugei at one time.

"I see the rest I wished to give you all won't be happening. If those lights mean what I think they do then I suppose the fight for myself and my own men isn't quite as finished as we'd have believed. Well then, I can at least offer you all a chance to rest as much as you feel you can and take what weapons and armor you need from our storehouses. No sense rushing back to Edo with chipped blades. As for that young man Nao, I will be contacting the Shogunate myself. I don't think he is in any condition to go anywhere right now."

It took a bit of work, careful not to overly strain limbs, while dressing Yuna and seeing to Mirai. Suishoku thought to try healing them as they changed but was too tired to think of that. Her mind was set to finish this meeting quickly and hide herself in bed when this mission is over if that luxury was given. Enemies like the Ikko don't just disappear over night and neither are the fears and scars that came from it. Miari didn't look all that well and may have felt this too. This was the girl's first mission but, really, who wants to talk about that when trying to find comforts in the aftermath. The struggled smile that appeared on the younger girl's face put some ease in Suishoku that she chose right to avoid speaking that topic.

They left, all three girls, in a variation of green somewhere on their clothes matched with another color while the boy's took upon more earthy tones. Suishoku's eyes caught sight of the smaller Azai emblem on Nobu's attire as the group was ushered to meet the Maeda Lord. How oddly accommodating to have one done so quickly. They may have been given that knowledge since signing up back at the school. She thought of it strange but said nothing about it by the time they were escorted to the room.

Before them was her home ruler and to put ease of her meeting with him earlier, he looked very much alive and well. She took her place to sit before him with the others. Her hands set pressed upon her lap as her lord spoke to them. Each one of them addressed thoughtfully of the situation. Mirai seemed to almost pride herself for what she did and, by impressions, felt more eager to battle again. When mentioned, Suishoku bowed deeply for the recognition of service and as a citizen but it was clear by his words that perhaps Lord Maeda was being more tactful in this aftermath.

His words were more brief toward Mirai and direct. He too did his best not to be hard on her. Suishoku turned to her friend and bowed her head slightly as a show of thanks for being here. Nobu got his own treatment with the slight humor of knowing his father. It wasn't hard to imagine Lord Maeda being familiar drinking friends with others given his stature off the battle fields. The mood in the room gradually lightened when Nobu was addressed and the prospects of given time off here to recover in Kanazawa. It would be nice for a change, to relax and not have too much work to be done but, just as Suishoku was thinking about work, their phones delivered more news.

As rude as it was to look, she took her phone from her sleeve and saw the images of ships before promptly putting it away. Edo wasn't safe and now they must go. Suishoku sighed in disappointment at the loss before bowing to her lord once more. "We much appreciate the time and care you have given us, my lord, and to see you are well. Perhaps another time, at your leave, we could fully take up on your offer." It'll still be a few hours of a ride to get back to Edo, no matter what speed of travel that could afford them time, so Suishoku decided she could try to find rest on the way back. She would depart the room and waited for the others who were going back to Edo as well before departing for the store houses to find some bits of armor to take with and weapons. She hoped maybe some didn't need to but left it so that, it Mirai didn't want to, the girl would say it herself. Going back to Edo was more obligation bound for Suishoku. It would also look bad for a 'healthy' unit to not go defend Edo. Alternative paths out were too heavily barred with deeper pitfalls of consequences behind them, thus, Suishoku resided to the work placed before her with a withdrawn tone.

Back somewhere in the city, Suishoku lost her whip and left that fight with just her tanto. As much planning and preparation the Maeda may have, they were borrowing weapons from their store houses where many of their soldiers would be using. Even if she were to find one would it be like breaking in a new bow in a short amount of time. She would take another tanto and also contemplated on taking a bow and arrow set with her while collecting some armor for her arms and legs. As long as she could hit the target then it should suffice enough, were Suishoku's thoughts about it. before she would forget any further, Suishoku started digging around the storehouse more for something equal to a medical pack. Her own supplies were taken up to be used around the Southern Gate so she scrambled to make something up on the spot of medium weight. "Seems like we'll head to the station and make whatever plans we can. Hopefully the railway is still intact." For what horrors that may fall upon them when returning to Edo, she prayed it won't be similar to what was outside Kanazawa's gates.

Mirai was thankful for Suishoku’s help dressing - it made it much easier than it would have been on her own. The fresh clothes were a joy; it didn’t feel as nice as it would have to take a hot bath as well and get properly clean, but without filth coating her clothes she felt a step removed from the battle that had just taken place. It finally felt like it was over. Though she felt reassured that the future would be safe, it didn’t do much to relieve the stress of the battle that had just occurred.

MIrai stuck close behind Suishoku as they were ushered into a room that was empty of people save for the Bugei students, two guards, and a man still dressed in his combat gear - the head of the Maeda clan. Mirai glanced around quizzically; what could they be leading them to see the Maeda lord for?

The purpose of being here soon became clear as he began to praise them. Mirai looked at each of the other students with a smile as they each received their individual praise. Mirai was glad to have the others with her, particularly Nobuyori and Suishoku who’d been there to help her in various ways - in fact, it only occurred to her just then the extent to which Nouyori's actions had helped her; without him she might very well have died. She’d have to thank him properly for that rather than just the small mumbled thanks she’d given him already. She bowed deeply to the Maeda lord when he praised her, even if she felt a little bit wrong to be praised (and for Suishoku to be echoing that praise with a small bow) when she’d contributed so little. “Sir, I don't deserve the honour. Azai-san and the others are the ones who you should be thanking,” she said, and it wasn’t just modesty, though likely it could be interpreted that way; she thought it was true. Kept the others calm? Aided his men? Mirai wanted to believe that, she really did. But compared to the glowing achievements of the comrades beside her it felt like a hollow success even if it was true.

The suggestion of a rest was a welcome one - the day had been so overwhelming that Mirai was left with little brain power to process anything extra. A moment to relax and try to get this whole battle out of her head for awhile was exactly what she needed right now.

But, alas, almost as soon as the suggestion had been made they received a new order - head to Edo quick smart, no delaying. Mirai’s heart sank instantly. What could be going on in Edo that needed them back so soon? Was something happening? Were people in danger? What if it was another war to be fought?

It felt like it would never end. Even if one arm wasn’t out of action she doubted she would have been able to bring herself to be part of yet more fighting. It was simply unfathomable.

So fathom it she didn’t. For now she would push the destination and the purpose to the back of her mind and prepare like they’d been instructed to. She wouldn’t need to borrow a weapon like Lord Maeda had offered; she still had her katana, though she’d need to clean it up first, and she might not be part of any fighting anyway due to her injury. Cleaning the blade was a routine action that she’d done before, which made it somewhat calming to be doing familiar, but even though she tried to keep her mind free of thoughts of where they were going and what they doing she couldn’t quite get rid of the slowly growing feeling of dread and even ignoring the cause of the dread couldn’t quite get rid of it. Mirai felt sick, and her face looked pale.

RPC POST

Nobuyori looked for a long time at the leader of the Maeda clan. As he praised everyone Nobuyori did his best to sum up the man in front of him. He seemed eager to fight but not to die. He was also kind enough to be polite to Nobuyori and even have a special jacket prepared for him to change in to. He had also left his own children in Edo while their home got attack. For a clan that loved combat, the Maeda weren't to be underestimated when it came to planning. At least this man wasn't. Giving a deep bow Nobuyori returned the man's words.
"Thank you, lord Maeda. I am glad that both you and your city are safe." though safe was all relative. As Nobuyori placed his relic talismans inside the new Maeda colored jacket he thought of just how safe the country could really be labeled as being right now consider the Ikko threat.

At lord Maeda's words Nobuyori for one was deeply looking forward to a rest. Though that wasn't to come. Almost as though calling the Ikko themselves the student's phones went off. While they had been saving the Maeda it seemed the Ikko's leaders had appeared off the coast of Edo.
"Osaka..." Nobuyori thought. One of the missions for the students had been to go protect Osaka from a coastal assault. Likely a majority of the Shogunate's forced had gone that way. Even so a few ships still had to be in Edo harbor and would likely be able to hold the Ikko warship off for a little bit if not sink it all together.
"Thank you for the offer to rest, but it looks like we can't take it." was all he could think to say.

He figured his naginata and jacket would either be returned to him, or considered too dirty and destroyed. With that in mind he took up the offer to look through the Maeda clan's storehouses and quickly found a new naginata for himself. It had a bit wider head than he was use to but all the better for cleaving rebel monks he supposed. Right now three things mattered. His fellow students, especially Suishoku, managed to live. Beat up and bruised sure, but they are alive. The second was that Omi hadn't been attacked. Finally, Edo was under attack and if Edo was the Ikko target as they claimed, then this would likely be the largest battle. In theory, all the students had to do was survive this battle and the war would be over. He hoped.

Conciousness was something that had been flickering in and out for the young student. He remembered being worked on... then he remembered walk, and talking, and something about a meeting. And then he wasn't. Try as he might, for once, sleep was not something he wanted, yet it forced itself upon him. The whole time his hand opened and closed, feeling... strange without his hammer, struck into the battle field like a testament of stubbornness against the idiocy of the Ikko. It was a weight he regularly complained about, but now that it was gone, Nao felt naked.

He was able to gather enough information. That he was badly hurt. That there was another fight. A fight he couldn't assist in. A fight that was even bigger than this one. But he would be there, at the castle, until he could walk, until he was capable of walking.

~NPC POST~

Music is here!

All of the students would be quickly assembled except Nao. Nao wouldn't be fully aware of it for some time, however the boy had been placed in a private room inside of the Maeda clan's castle. His damaged relic had also been placed within the room. Unlike other clans the Maeda had been given half of the Tokugawa's army and thus currently stood as one of the most loyal clans in the country. They had no intention of harming Nao nor of stealing his relic, and while the boy slept three of the Maeda's best guards stood watch over him. One within the room itself, one outside the door, and one outside the castle, on the look out in case anyone tried to sleep into the room from outside. Nao's wounds weren't deep per. say, however the boy had used a lot of energy and his body was currently running on absolute fumes. No doubt when he woke up he would be extremely exhausted, and quite hungry.

Meanwhile the other students would be quickly taken to the same train line they had used to enter the city. It would be a long ride back to Edo, however given the current situation it was the quickest way to go. If the students would be put inside a helicopter then one solid shot from any foe could kill all of the students at once. However at least in a train they had a slightly better chance of survival. With the same two Maeda samurai that had brought them to Kanazaa at the start of the mission joining them they bowed deeply.
"Our lord regrets that he can not send Maeda warriors with you. However the Maeda and Uesugi clans have both suffered heavy loses and all attention must be focused on the city should a second attack come." one of the guards said as the other informed the conductor it was time to go.

As the students took the long train back to Edo they knew no transportation would be quick enough to arrive as fast as they, or the Shogunate, would have preferred. Right now a massive foreign ship with steel and cannons was approaching the city, and no doubt the Ikko had rebels hiding within the city of Edo itself. Whatever was about to happen to the students, it would be one hell of a fight. Right now the best they could do was hope themselves prepared, and hope they could manage to keep one another alive.
