Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

"It's nothing. Asking most citizens in Edo for guidance would provide directions," Mika replied then having to pinch her own wrist to keep her from cringing again at their insistence of not losing track of her. What a pain.

"Very well," she grimaced in dismay. Now obligated to, Mika sighed and lead Yiting to the nearest station to board with a purposely slower demonstration of using her student ID pass on the train reader to proceed to the landing for the train's arrival. Her head remained forward for most of the time with the rest of the sights no so much taken in unlike the transfer student's roving eyes.

Since the train would be running a bit slower due to the holiday crowds, Mika held her hands together to feint patience while asking Yiting about their sight seeing. "Are there things Edo has that your home does not?" She asked since the students themselves came from China and maybe the Hong Kong area but there wasn't certain that everyone did like how Edo had a collective of students from different territories of Japan. It would explain the constant head turning. Their conversation would continue a bit further as the train arrived for them to board for the northern portion of the city. Seats were limited so standing was a high probability.

"Are there things Edo has that your home does not?" she asked as they managed to make it to the train. It seemed hordes of people had been getting on and off the train due to the holidays and everyone moving around Edo or heading out to different areas. However, Yiting's height helped her keep up with Mikazuki as well as her trained agility. As they finally found room to discuss things Yiting looked around at the station then at Mika.
"I would say Beijing is different." she said in fairly good Japanese.
"The center is walled off, with ancient buildings. Then everything else is around it." in many ways it was like Kyoto, but if Kyoto itself had been placed in the middle of Edo instead of the Shogunate's castle, at least how Yiting described it.

"Beijing also has many bright colors painted on things. Edo has a lot of buildings the same color, then many bright signs." she observed.
"Imagine many building. Some bright green, some bright blue, some stripes." she wasn't sure how to explain it in Japanese. So instead she pulled out a phone and brought up pictures of China's main city.

"See?" she said with a bit of a proud smile. After all, Beijing wasn't her home, but it was a city she called home while attending the private school their and a city that much like the Edo Bugei students she had protect more than once, with her own sweat and blood.

“I do.”

Mika nodded. The array of colorful pictures stood out too greatly in comparison to Edo’s collections of buildings and designated districts of where the shops were and the temples to the central castle location. In turn of the Edo rebuilding and its lack of outlandish colors, Mika then noted about the pictures in question. “Your city seems to appreciate the arts more. Or perhaps you enjoy these works as an important aspect of your city, yes?” To Mika and her time in Edo, anything that was largely colorful and demanding attention were designed for that. An art piece attraction from a deviant, commissioned structures approved in design that appeases someone or some section of the city.

She did not know how things were run back in Yiting’s home or if the two cities ran more similarly to Edo than Kiyoto. Without traveling that path did she remain on their current temple venture. Yiting could prattle on about Beijing and she’ll nodd in political turn of partially listening.

Their stop came announced overhead and people shuffled toward the doors. When the train came to a half did the people exit in one sweep. There was no delaying but an objective school of fish filtering out to the exit stations. The girl would be swept up in this till outside the station front. From here was the pathway plain and simple. Massive red temple gates of its gaudy entrance can be seen from here and shops on both sides of the road remained open and lively. Their trade nearly as old as the temple itself.

Yiting felt excited, showing off some of the most beautiful buildings in her city.
Your city seems to appreciate the arts more. Or perhaps you enjoy these works as an important aspect of your city, yes?” Mika asked. Yiting nodded as the train went on.
"To be fair, those are also the most dramatic forms of art. However, yes. Compared to how uniform Edo looks, Beijing is full of all kinds of colors. It is to celebrate the Emperor, and keep everyone's spirits high, even in dark times." she commented. It was well known that China and Russia had been deadlocked on their northern border for centuries, both constantly ready to go to war with the other. An atmosphere like that was bound to create a fairly dark atmosphere from time to time. However, China's current Emperor was known to be an outgoing man who loved bright colors and the arts.

"I think Japan's art is good though. Sometimes Beijing is too bright and distracting. Japanese art is beautiful in it's natural tones and non-overwhelming appearance." after explaining to Mikazuki, Yiting's train ride came to an end as the doors opened. In front of them two of them a long corridor of red tori gates and shops extended forward towards the temple. Yiting's eyes went wide. She was use to large street markets in Beijing. However, this was beautiful in it's own way. It was a long street full of goods she hadn't seen before.
"Wow, this is beautiful." she told Mikazukis simply.
"Do all of these street side shops have food?" she asked, her voice seeming quite happy and enthusiastic.

"How investing," Mika commented but didn't see how that would have worked for Edo. An earthquake with little resources to look bright that the efforts went back to building efforts first and foremost. The murders that tore wide spread through the city by the Ikko, well, Mika disagreed in the same train of thought. Visiting Kyoto and how detached it was made her worry that this far off city in China thought the same. Reminded of these and Kyoto made her look to the ground and pick up her pace quicker through the crowd.

Souvenirs and small trinkets lined both sides of the pathway with many boasting to have been an established merchant to the shrine since the beginning. Much of which do hold true. Small dried goodies snacks and then some could be found in the stalls. None of which were flashy festival meals though like cotton candy and chocolate bananas. "Only if you feel hungry to," Mika brushed off about the food comments as the hawkers did the advertising for her. Maybe the enticing cookies would steer this bodyguard away.

Past the tori gate and its two thunder gods were the grounds that felt bigger than the gate itself. A pagoda tower stood to the side by itself holding the funeral markings for only relatives of the departed to visit. A lone tower full of grave markers yet interesting how it stood this day. Further along was the main shrine to give prayer. As people entered, many of their heads also turned upwards to beautiful murals and artwork on the ceiling of all places. Even a small garden was on the property. Not many visitors could actively go in it but it remained well kept with its stone bridges and walkways adding polished elegance to the greenery.

Yiting walked through the street, a curious look on her face towards every stall as various people shouted about what goods they had for sale and more then a few citizen stared at the obvious foreigners in their midst. Every vendor seemed to have different kinds of goods as Yiting made mental notes of food to check out later. She didn't want to stop and get food in fear of losing her tour guide as Mikazuki seemed rather focus on getting to the large gate that showed the temple grounds.

Beyond the gate the temple grounds looked lovely and out of both habit and tradition Yiting said a small prayer in Chinese. The grounds appeared to be well maintained by the monks that lived in the area and quite different from the row of shops behind them. In the distance a group of people could be seen holding prayer services and she silently prayed for whomever they had lost.
"This place is truly peaceful. It is strange to think the grounds in front, with shops, and this place, with its calmness, are connected." she said to Mikazuki quietly. The one downside to Beijing was that to find a place as scenic and relaxing to the eyes as this place, one had to travel far into the country side. Edo seemed to have the temples in the area as part of the city itself.

As they entered the main shrine Yiting openly gawked at the murals around them. She had seen Buddhist temples back home, but in many subtle ways both the design and art appears different than in mainland China. At the main shrine she would give a long prayer for peace for both lands, and good health for the students of Beijing and Edo Academies. She was tempted to ask Mika what she prayed for but decided it would be rude. Instead she said
"I thank you for guiding me."

"Or a symbiotic relationship with the stalls in the front to the temple grounds as we see them here," Mika provided her own thoughts as to why it was a wonder. The temple was famous and likely had been in its earlier times. Sacred and people flocked to them but shops and stores encouraged more for providing more than the basic temple. One could say it is an early form of a tourist trap with both locations benefit off of one another. The pride these shop owners possessed for being third or fourth generation store clerks may attribute to the wealth and security to keep these life styles.

Following in tune with the crowd did she and Yiting arrive at the mass prayer stand. A rope with a bell rested beyond a donations box and virtuous statues beyond even that. She quietly prayed to live to accomplish her goals than to spite her brother and family for a change and left to the side after doing so for others to share their thoughts to the gods. Yiting, as annoyingly diligent as ever, trailed after her to give thanks for the guiding.

"It wasn't worth thanking," Mika brushed it off. "However the grounds are more pleasant than expected." She sighed and looked around. The prayers have been said and done and while the grounds were nice, Mika would have offered more of her time if the current events hadn't made the already famous landmark to be more populated than usual. "I suppose it will be back to the dorms then for that bath. You can go shopping the stalls as you see fit for souvenirs." Mika continued to try suggesting Yiting away with the prospects of shopping or something. Personally, while they did talk about baths earlier, Mika felt more at ease in the proximity of the baths provided by the school than lavish herself in one of Edo's other bath houses then travel back to the school.

"I suppose it will be back to the dorms then for that bath. You can go shopping the stalls as you see fit for souvenirs." As Mika spoke of returning to the school Yiting caught wind of her apparent idea of showering at the school instead of any type of bath house. Since Mika had been kind enough to show Yiting around the temple grounds the girl didn't want to raise any objection. It wasn't as though she couldn't visit a bath house on her own sometime, or with a group of students. It was also possible that this girl that had taken time out of her day to show Yiting around needed to return to the school to study. Yiting of course had a certain stuck up prince to go and check on.

"Souvenirs would be a good idea. I will try not to take too much of your time." and with that Yiting turned to meander into the stalls of the merchants. They had so many things from foods to various goods. Seeing a beautiful golden phoenix pin she got it for her lord. Though as she went to pick it up she thought of the other CHinese students as well. Currently she was rooming near the other two girls that had come on the trip and she wanted to get something for them. Handing the merchant what was likely far too much money, he gave her quite a bit back. Try as she might she hadn't grasped Japanese currency yet and simply went with what she was given. After all, merchants where never crooked right?

With the rest of the money she got plenty of sweet Japanese snacks for the other students in her group. Then, she thought of Mika. Mikazuki had been so kind to show her around, though she probably saw these things every day it would still be nice. Looking around she saw a beautiful folding fan with a gray background and blue waves with light silver lines in them to separate the waves from one another. Even she could tell the cost was a bit high, but still she wanted to get it. After finishing her shopping she would then look around for her tour guide. Unfortunately it looked, to her, as though Mika was getting dragged along with the large shuffled of people around the temple. Quickly running up to the blond Yiting said
"I'm glad I found you. It looks like this current carried you further away than I expected!" in a heavy accent as she gave Mika a beautiful light blue bag.
"I wanted to say thank you for today." inside would be the fan.

Finally they have taken the bait. Yiting won't see it but a sigh of relief was given and Mika started to look a bit more relaxed. This crowded affair seemed to go on too long that the company itself was nearly overbearing without them trying to be. She waited for Yiting to venture off and into the hands of the merchants before letting herself float along with the crowd. No rush in leaving and certainly no will to urge these people to move any faster but it gave Mika a moments peace anyway from that stand in guard.

The blonde kept in pace with the other people around her, not drawing attention and now making more attention. Thoughts of going back to the dorm and have a bath floated in while gradually moving further and further away from the giant red gates. But was it all bad? Mika didn't like that thought. The thought of tolerating someone when most others hardly cared less of her. Similar to Viola, Eiji, that prideful girl on the Kyoto mission, and ,to a grudgingly lesser degree, that biker Bu; they each got into her and more personally at her. Normally she would disregard anyone and everything else for her brother and the Honda family. Nothing else was important or had any value if they weren't used to test her brother's tolerance of what a lord was to handle later on. Be it hopeless suitors or pathetic rivals would Mika kick her brother into these pitfalls just to see him crawl out with experience. Now with family and clan a smoldering thought to burn into an evening fire did Mika less anticipate having to deal with her own conflicts of personal interests.

Her eyes started to glare drills into the back of the people in front of her. How dare these people consider treating her lesser or some frail child! Some object to listen to petty woes and digging for sympathy! I should have just jumped from that bridge than continue living like this. Mika thought bitterly toward the people that attempted to form some bridge. Angry at these people and her own failures of being a worthless figure did Mika bite at the gums of her mouth at the realization that even getting the Ikko by influence was a fruitless endeavor. The book is nothing more than a code book of gibberish cants and just learning that is some key?! Her darkened thoughts were interrupted by Yiting of all people bearing an armful of random trinkets and food from the vendors. A...oddly large amount now that she started to take inventory.

"I wanted to say thank you for today."

Thank me!? Mika wanted to break them for having to endure this long temple venture with them as she plucked the bag and felt at its draw strings. "If that is your intentions I'll oblige them," Mika replied almost sternly before taking a look inside. Within was a rather delicate fan that she knew right away from touch that the materials weren't cheap. Curiously as to why this gift was even picked for a token of thanks, Mika opened it up briefly expecting to be greeted by some cheery shrine artwork or something of that garden. Grey ocean skies with silver crested waves were what held Mika's attention for a full second or two.

"Very well," she spoke softly in quelling the storm inside her. With a snap of the fan closing, she placed it back within its carrying bag with care and started through the crowd with a bit of purpose. "We should leave this crowd and return to the dorms. These items are too much for a bath house bin to hold." The Honda stated promptly. For now, her mind would change thank to this harmless endeavor on Yiting's part.

Yiting was happy as she saw Mika carefully inspect the fan. It was like a dark cloud had been about the girl all day, and for some reason the fan seemed to be washing a bit of the cloud away. It was a good feeling, and something Yiting was glad she could be present for as Mika closed the fan and announced that the pair would be returning to the dorms. Her reasoning was sound, after all the food Yiting had purchased, as well as the fan, wouldn't do well under all of the humidity one usually found inside an Edo bath house.

Thus the plan was set, and the would would start walking back to the dorms. Yiting still wanted to ask about why Mika seemed down, but wasn't about to split that hair in two. Due to Mika's nature, she wouldn't even say how glad she was that Mika enjoyed the fan. Instead she decided to go another rout to keep up conversation.
"I think that in spite of the color difference, both Beijing and Edo are beautiful. Edo feels calmer in many respects. Beijing always has so many colors and lights and people, that it is hard to ever truly feel rested when walking about town." due to her years at the academy, Mikazuki would understand very well how Yiting felt. As the girl explained about her hometown it made Beijing's atmosphere feel extremely similar to the city of Osaka with all of it's people and lights.

"As I said earlier, it is nice to stay on guard, but I think this is nice as well." she said as she gave a quaint smile to the city and people around her. She then turned and gave an even larger smile to Mikazuki. Unlike most it was a sincere smile, one that spoke of friendship, and understanding more than anything else.
"Are the baths back at the school fairly relaxing?" she asked curiously. She knew about the dorms but didn't know about the actual large bathing area that her and Mika would be going to. Due to her short time in Edo so far she hadn't actually explored much of the connecting area between the dorms.
