~The World~

In Sengoku Horizon the course of the world has changed. For the sake of upholding chivalry wars are fought with knights and samurai at close range instead of missiles and machine guns. Due to this focus on chivalry and military might various empires have come to power across the world. In Europe France, England, and Germany are constantly locked in a three way war with colonies across the world.

In Asia China and Russia are the two largest powers. Both countries rarely move but are constantly watching each other, waiting for war. Korea is a small country guarded by China known for it's flashy music groups and it's key role as a central trade point between China and Japan. The smaller Asian countries tend to keep to their own borders but all trade heavily with each other and China. In Southeast Asia the large island of Australia acts as a penal colony on the western side of the island, and an emerging economic power on it's Eastern coast.

Finally across the pacific the U.S., Mexico, and Canada have the world's most advanced guns and battleships known to the world. The three countries have managed to settle their borders through strict treaties and military build up along the borders. In south America, must like Asia, multiple small countries trade with each other but are often too busy dealing with civil disruption in their own borders to wage war on one another.

Central and Southern Japan

In Sengoku Hoirzon the fall of the Tokugawa Government never happened. After Sekigahara the Tokugawa had been named shogun, military lord of Japan, while the Emperor ruled quietly from Kyoto. This rule has gone on for the past four-hundred years with little disturbance. The Shogun has kept a heavy emphasis on bushido and the warrior class. Following samurai tradition the country is divided into clans and territories.

Because of the Tokugawa's Sakoku ("closed country") policies Japan has remained mostly isolated with strong limitations on who may enter and leave. While foreign trade does take place, only four trade ports exist between the isolated country of Japan and the rest of the world. These four ports are located in the Date clan's city of Sendai, the Shogun controlled city of Edo, the major trade hub Osaka, and the small island of Tanegashima located off of Kyushu's southern coast and operated by the Shimazu clan.

National education exists in Tokugawa Japan. While commoners do go to school, education is not only expensive but also non-compulsory. The level of education varies by ruling clan and funding within each province. So while a large amount of the Japanese common people are educated, a peasant class still exists made mostly of farmers and minors. For even though education is important poorer families in some provinces still rely on income from farming and mining just to stay afloat. Also, under the feudal system all able bodied men are expected to prepare for war should the lord of their province ever ask them too.

Through the passing of heirlooms, compatibility tests held by the Shogunate, and sometimes even dumb luck, Japanese teenagers are finding the left over sacred items of famous samurai. Students who's spirits are similar to those of ancient samurai and thus are able to use relics from the warring states period in order to gain amazing powers such as combat mastery, elemental control, and even teleportation.

A relic is created when a person with a strong soul, usually born of an era of war, passes away. Through out their life they would have had an item that was always on their person that slowly absorbed their strong spirit, their will, and their ambition. This item would then be passed down or traded around for centuries until it ended up in the hands of it's current owner.

The power of a relic is not limited by the power of the person in their previous life but instead by the power and experience gained in this new world. To activate a relic a person must be similar in spirit to the original owner. A relic could easily exist as an heirloom in a family for generations without activating if no one in the family has a similar spirit to the item's original owner. The current theory is that in every four generations, only two people exist who are compatible with a relic. Even then this relies on a person actually coming in contact with that relic to activate it.

Scion's power tend to come into full bloom durrring the highscool years of one's life. Shortly after teenagers activate these relics they are taken to a special charter school in Edo. At this school elite children, descended from samurai and nobles of the sengoku era are groomed for high ranking positions in the military and government.

Under Edo Castle the Tokugawa have a large vault of known relics. Many relics are also stored in museums or in the hands of famous clans. This is because without a proper person to active them relics aren't usually considered dangerous. A group of record keeping onmyouji residing below Edo Castle tend to the relic vault and keep extensive records on all known relics, from who owns them to what they have been doing with those relics recently. The head priest who resides under Edo Castle has a rare sensor relic that allow him to sense the general area of a relic's awakening. After his report the shogun then dispatch agents, either metsuke or shinobi, to the area to give a clear ultimatum to the Scion. They may either attend Edo Bugei, or be put down as a rebel Scion. This is how the shogunate is able to dispatch representatives to bring newly awakened scions into Edo Bugei. It should be noted though that given the number of strong souls that lived and died during the Sengoku Jidai not even the shogunate is completely sure of just how many relics exist.

Shortly after teenagers activate these relics they are taken to a special charter school in Edo. At this school elite children, descended from samurai and nobles of the sengoku era are groomed for high ranking positions in the military and government. The name of this school is Edo Bugei Academy.

Welcome to Edo Bugei, where high school truly is a battlefield. Created by the Shogunate in order to nurture the best and the brightest to lead the future of Japan, Edo Bugei is the country's most prestigious military academy that was designed to test its students in other ways than just multiple choice questions. Students must prove their worth in their chosen path in order to succeed.

In spite of their prestigious status the students of Edo bugei are far from free. The third Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu made a strict law that all clans must send their first child to Edo to live as a hostage all year in case the clan decided to rebel. The current Edo Bugei system is a modern version to this law. Through this system the future leaders of the country are tutored and trained by the shogunate, as well as given excellent protection. However, they are also hostages and closely monitored in case any start showing signs of a highly rebellious nature.

The challenges the Bugei students face are as varied as the students themselves. . Across Japan the atmosphere is tense. The Wokou, pirates from mainland Asia, repeatedly attack Japanese ships. Angry monk groups called the Ikko-Ikki rise up every few months and insight rebellion. Even among the warrior class various clans still wage war against one another to reclaim the lands they once ruled.

With students haling from various backgrounds not even Edo Bugei's campus can escape the political climate. Various clans with long standing blood feuds and conflicting views on the Shogunate clash both in and out of classes and missions. As anti-Tokugawa factions begin to clash with the shogunate, so to do students with different ideals begin to clash inside the Bugei. With the threads of Japan's stability slowly unwinding what role will your character play? A normal student trying to survive in this world? A loyalist of one of the factions looking to support his or her side? Perhaps a scion looking for something to do with your newly awakened powers? Or perhaps....something entirely different all together. The choice is yours.

In this world civilian technology is relatively unchanged. Energy is supplied mostly through steam and the burning of fossil fuels. Due to a horribly failed nuclear test in Chernobyl nuclear power never caught on. Also due to limited resources jet propulsion as a means of transportation and combat are extremely uncommon. Massive transport and passenger plans are far more common than missiles and fighter planes.

Cars are fairly uncommon in many parts of Asia due to environmental concerns. Trains and buses are often used for mass transit, and the electrical railed shinkansen is a preference for long distance travel. Personal bikes and motorcycles are expensive but common. In terms of getting around Asia, or traveling from one Japanese island to another, ships are still very much the mainstay. Cell phones, tablets, game platforms, etc. still exist, just with a bit reduced graphics, lower battery life, and mostly useless reception depending on the area.

The existence of scions and lack of fuel stopped the development of long range missiles and nuclear weaponry. Since weaponry is mostly focused on edged weapons gun and naval military technology haven't advanced past roughly 1865 in our world. This means Japan's rifles are breech or muzzle loading, lever action, with America has gun technology more equivalent to 1880 in our world. The most powerful gun in the world right now is the Modified Gatling gun. Ships have large cannons on them that are more in line with siege cannons than what we would consider naval cannons. Steam powered ironclads are the pride of most countries. Some ships also carry torpedo launchers and have rotating platforms that house Gatling guns inside of them or raised areas for rows of archers or riflemen to stand on and fire from.

Armor has also changed quite a bit over the past 400 years. Due to almost two centuries of fairly peaceful life battle armor for generals and specialists has now become something made more for style and appearance rather than actual combat. Usually it is a slick, well fitting outfit adorned with an extra hard piece of armor covering critical places while having thick padding or chain-mail underneath. Examples are as follows.
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
Example 4
Example 5

Azai Nobuyori
The stuck up clan lord who defends the people.

Tagami Yumiko
The adorable poet girl who hates war.
