Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

NPC POST

A quiet spring night in Northern Honshu

The train clacked forward through the night. A small passenger train on it's way north from Edo to the northern city of Shinjo. Outside of the train the passengers, most of which had already fallen asleep, would see a lovely country side illuminated by a bright, full moon. Fortunately it was the first time they would have seen a clear sky after the past few day's constantly downpour of rain. Most of the passengers seemed to be traveling North to see family, or friends, or even to do business in larger towns like Sendai. Two passengers, however, had a different purpose this evening.

Kuki Jinn and Kagutsu Reika had both signed up for a rather strange mission, even as far as mission from the Bugei went. Normally the academy, as a branch of the Shogunate, aided samurai and fought the Ikko Ikki. This time, however, was quite different. It seemed that a group of peasant farmers aligned with the Ikko had been taken prisoner by a group of rogue samurai. The samurai had said that since the Ikko Ikki wished death upon the samurai, they would slay Ikko members in order to get back at the Ikko and prove their loyalty to the Shogunate. Politically, the entire thing was a disaster and the Shogunate had felt awkward about the entire situation.

In the end the Shogunate decided to allow the academy to handle the situation and try to get on the good side of some of the Northern farmers and rebels. It also wanted to make clear that the Shogunate didn't support stray ronin who used their swords for illegal activities. So now the two, currently an hour out from the city, needed to discuss what to do in regards to the situation, and if they truly wished to help the Shogun's reputation with the peasants, or simply slaughter a few rogue samurai.

Reika sat on the train, leaning back, and relaxing. It was the first time in months that she wasn't under the direct supervision of a pesky shinobi. She was starting to go a bit crazy(er) from always feeling like there was eyes on her. She was also completely convinced that it wasn't a group, but a solitary one. The voice, whenever it spoke, was always the same. She hated it. But now, here she was...on a train north bound with another student. Someone she hadn't really ever met, nor did she really care. To Reika, this was literally just an excuse to cut loose and do something she was really good at. Kill.

Her two blades were leaned against one shoulder, and she smiled at them. They were honestly, extremely plain. No decorations on the sheeths, just matte black. No gold filigree, or etchings, not even a shogunate symbol or chrysamthmum on them. Their tsubas were dull metal, pretty plain. The one was a demon's head, it's mouth open to the blade. The other was just a plain disk. Even their handle wraps were plain. Still, she loved them. She eased herself to a sitting position and thumbed one, pushing it out of it's sheath.

"Tonight...you bathe in blood again." She said to the blade. She looked across to her compatriot and looked him over, before speaking. "So. Are we just going to kill them all and let it sort itself out? I mean, these are a bunch of farmers that sided with Ikko." Reika grinned a bit, unable to not poke a noble. "I mean they are all guilty of treason to the shogunate. Bet you'd love to show those...peasants...their place, hmmm?"

Saying this wasn’t how Toki wanted to spend his time was and understatement, he was after all not one to take missions or even his workshop. However, the oddity of this mission did lend itself to a certain interest he had been working on, plus if these really were Ikko the information they process may be of use to him. But like with all things, there was a price and currently that price was talking to her swords.
Tonight...you bathe in blood again. Toki didn’t say anything he didn’t even look at her, clearly, she was one of those that stayed up too lake to watch shitty movies and cartoons. Yet while he attempted to ignore her, she had other things in mind. "So. Are we just going to kill them all and let it sort itself out? I mean, these are a bunch of farmers that sided with Ikko. If Toki didn’t think she was going to be a problem then that cleared things up, in truth he wasn’t against the idea hell he felt nothing for these people, but a job was a job. I mean they are all guilty of treason to the shogunate. Bet you'd love to show those...peasants...their place, hmmm?

He wasn’t a hundred percent sure why she emphasised that part about the peasants, she must have confused him with someone else. Now in this situation he would normal have said nothing but, “I don’t care if their traitors or the emperor of China, if the mission is save the people we save the people and god help me if you screw this up for me, I’ll put something in your place. “ he went with a veiled threat cause that always a good idea.

They would both get details sent to their phones. A series of text documents about the Northern area around Sendai. A lot of the far north had large cities like Sendai itself but also multiple peasant towns. Some of the towns ended up fairly lawless and usually full of run away criminals and untouchables due to being as secluded from Shogunate eyes as possible. After the large Ikko revolt last year, these cities had also become a place for many Ikko supporters and even former Ikko members to throw away their allegiances and try their hands as farmers and priests. Some of them had even attempted to become merchants when possible. All of this to try and distance themselves from the Ikko's failed revolt.

Sadly, not everyone who went to these villages all thought alike. In a low policed area various groups clashed. This mission happened to be one of them. A small group of former samurai looking to get back in the graces of the Shogun by killing former Ikko members the Shogunate couldn't have cared less about. It simply showed how desperate the ronin had become and how low on resources they may be. As the two discussed their plans the train neared their stop. Though it seemed the two still had a bit of discussion left to work out.

Reika glowered at the boy. "Put me in my place, eh?" She stood up as the train came to it's stop. She moved her own black outfit around a bit. She had purchased an outfit, the dark ronin one, simply because the female combat uniform flashed FAR too much skin. Plus a skirt? Who the hell wore that to a battle. She shook her head a bit. It was straight up just to seem far more intimidating, and she had even torn the sleeves off, showing off parts of her shoulder tattoos and the rest of her arms bare. Save for the vambraces. She looked at the boy as she put her two blades in place behind her.

"Stronger and better men have tried. Don't think you can even come close to spooking me. I asked you how we should go about it, out of deference to your seniority at the school. Don't let that mislead you into thinking anything more than that." She adjusted her vambrace, tightening into place on both sides and flexing her fingers in the gloves. "My opinion is kill them all, and let themselves sort themselves out in the after life. The Ikko are traitors to the shogunate, while the samurai are petty snobs looking to get back in some good graces. The same graces that originally cast them out. But they both have something in common." She grinned sadistically as the train came to it's full stop.

"They both bleed when you slice them up. Either way. You're the talker, and I'm the muscle. You do what you do, and if things go sideways...I'll cut them to pieces." It wasn't so much as a standard statement, and so much an ultimatum. It seemed the girl was already set in turning this into a complete bloodbath, if given the slightest provocation. Which meant, she was forcing Toki to try and level out any kind of diplomacy.

She stepped out of the train, and began walking to the target destination. A slightly menacing grin on her face, her hands twitched constantly. This was definitely going to be a bloody mission.

The girl reacted to the “promise” much like Toki expected, hostile and totally missing the point but when working with untrained blood hound what were you to expect. It wasn’t his job break this one, but he would be more then will to put her down. thus, as she started growling and showing her fangs reached towards his weapon just in case something foolish was done. Luckily the girl had some shred of sense and backed off, going on with her opinion. Frankly Toki didn’t care what she thought or wanted to him she was nothing more then a tool to be exploited. Besides it wasn’t like he disagreed with her, not that he’d ever tell her that, but he needed something from those people and hopfully for their sakes that had it or else the girl may get her way.

You're the talker, and I'm the muscle… At least she understood her place in the team which was a start, but Toki still had to deal with the bloodlust if the girl snaped at the first provocation then the whole thing would be a bust and Toki would be back to square one. That however was a bridge for a later time there was still much to do till then.
“Least you understand, now come we're at here. ”

The pair arrived in Sendai. It was a beautiful city ruled by the famous Date clan. Known for it's low crime, high economics, and vast trade networks Sendai was as though someone had taken the massive trade city of Osaka and made it smaller, then added far more trees. The Date seemed to have an eye for nature and it clearly showed with the large trees lining the sides of quite a few streets and the large parks in the city. Thus, in this large, northern city, the air somehow seemed far more fresh than what either of the two would be use to.

Looking around they didn't get greeted by official Tokugawa or Date samurai like a normal mission. Instead it seemed that a rather shabby looking man had been waiting for them. He had medium length gray hair, and nice brown ronin robes. The dark gray scarf around his neck matched his hair and the twin katana at his side hinted he may be of at least some kind of rank. Seeing the two he gave a polite bow.
"Welcome to Sendai, though I'm sure you may have been here before. My name is Sakatane Matsuoka. I am a samurai from the Tsuguru Clan of Mutsu who has been asked to escort you both to the outskirt village." he said and pointed to a small brown car. It looked unimpressive to phrase it even slightly nicely but it wasn't as though any clan wanted to make a big deal of the situation.

"Unfortunately large clans don't care much for the citizenship so no proper cars or air lifts this time." as they got in the car and started leaving the town of Sendai the view seemed very different. Sendai was clearly a well maintained city, and even the farms outside of the city looked well budgeted, however it didn't take long, upon drivin to the outskirts of the province, that things started to dip away.

This would be a site both would be use to. The land between major cities was full of beautiful wilderness but also small, out of the way towns and even more out of the way people. Especially in the North away from Edo. The car would drive for what felt like hours until it reached a small city tucked away near the mountains. The village had large hills behind it and dead woods around it as the car stopped about a twenty minute walk out. As the three got out of the car they would be able to clear see a town in the valley ahead of them. It appeared to be a shanty town.

Reika sighed a bit. She hated this already. A pompous little twerp with her, some stupid samurai giving them a ride. This whole situation stank. It improved a little bit, oddly, when they got to the shanty town. Reika had grown up in the poorest part of Edo. While it was certainly an upgrade to this place, it still wasn't a proper place to live. Even more so for a child. The car hadn't even come to a full stop, and she had hopped out of the car. She was off, walking purpsefully towards the makeshift town. She breathed deep...it smelled. Fear, desperation, hard work, misery...smells she was completely familiar with.

She stopped and turned back around. "Where are they?" It was about the only question she really needed answered. Not, how many are they? What are they equipped with? Do they have any support coming in? None of those really mattered to her...just where they were, and how to get there. She was giddy, bouncing from foot to foot. She could already feel the chemical coctail of her brain doping her system in anticipation.

Her heart thumped faster, and she felt her muscles twinge a bit. She was ready for this. It had been several months since she'd been able to kill someone. And to be given government sanction to cut loose...it was like one of those bad action movies she'd heard about.

Upon leaving the train the pair were greeted by an older looking man, who seemed to be their escort out of the city in what seemed like a slightly rundown car. Not like Toki was going to complain how he travel wasn’t as impotent as how long. As they started to leave the city the landscape began to change and no matter how many times he saw it Toki always how prosperity always gave way to poverty, it was one of his biggest problems with the nation. Everyone believe they were living in some sort of golden age, they diverted their eyes from the truth even when that truth was stabbing them in the face. Luckily it didn’t take long for them to reach their destination, a small desolate place. Which apparently Reika had taken an affinity too since she was in such a hurry to get out and head to it. Where are they? is all she said, and all Toki could do was shake his head if he didn’t do anything his headache was only going to get worse luckily he had something in mind but before that he turn to the old man.

“Ignore her. what’s the situations? “ unlike a certain someone he like have information before entering an apparently death trap, as he waited for the information Toki began formulating how he was going to apply the medicine.

As the samurai got his questions he answered both, since both would pretty much be the same answer.
"The shanty town is large. Spread over a large area but not a huge population. Most of the townspeople ran tot he east side of town. The ronin have pretty much taken over the west side and about six to nine ronin are allegedly holding some of the Ikko townspeople hostage in two buildings. They seperated the males from the women and children." the answer wasn't very precise on which buildings or what exactly the ronin looked like but that was stuff townspeople would know. He only had a basic idea of the situation due to scouting the day before.

"I"m not sure the ronin have an established leader. I think they are essentially just bandits who flocked together. At least that would be my guess since we don't have any statements from one individual person." though this caused the man to shrug a bit. After all every group had power dynamics and he was sure one or two of the group had likely taken some form of control by now. It was human nature after all.
"From what I've heard, the townspeople are fairly scared, and some of the roning have been patrolling the outer edges of town in the evening to stop anyone from trying to escape. My guess would be they are saving the rest of the townspeople to be heads for a samurai lord later."
