In a vibrant room of colors and students animatedly conversing with each other, Oinu cocked her head to the side and breathed a sigh a relief. Her long club get-together was finally over. She casually began spinning her pencil as to wash over her shaky nervousness from almost a whole hour in leading the club meeting.

She wasn’t comfortable leading the chorus club as she would have leading a mission that could result in injury or even death. Compared to the skills she had acquired from years ago and beyond, she wasn't so sure about her ability to sing and lead such a chorus club.

She had only began really singing just two years ago. Singing with close ones was okay but she wasn't as confident in front of others. It was only because she owed the leader a favor and was apparently not well but she knew better.

Now, they were just hanging around and leeching off the comfortable classroom instead of walking around the crowded hallways. Oinu’s lips twisted upwards reminiscing that she would do the same exact thing just because she would rather relax inside the classroom. Actually she would never admit it to most others, her close friends knew that it was more that she was lazy.

They would always tease her that she was a lazy dog outside of missions and the complete opposite during missions. They found it strange. She countered their egging on teasing giving them a foxy smile in retort saying that it was a great skill to have in mission. She would dreamily say ‘you could call it lazy—but I call it patience guys.’

As the time dragged on, student gradually disperse in the hallways and waved goodbyes to her and some others. She conversed with the few students left who were talking about mundane subjects and rumors being spread around. She would ask them about those topics and a grain of salt on the exciting going-ons in the academy.

Although she didn't care for much of the conversation, she enjoyed the company of others. When she was the only one left, decided she had way too many homework to catch up to, she sighed and messaged her friends telling them she couldn't hang out with them in the afternoon.

As she brought out her math book that she loathed, she had a whiff of a presence and saw a black haired male with a baby-face that made him look like such an angel and then introduced himself.

She widened her eyes as he presented her with a lunchbox beautifully crafted. She figured that he might be one of the artisan track students. She blushed as she accepted the lunchbox and thanked him with a wrinkled smile.

It was rare that another student other than her friends would take the effort to make a lunch especially for an older student though she could be wrong about his age. She watched as his cheeks turned a slight pink and stammering that he wanted just one hug from a pretty girl. She thought it was adorable and reassured him saying that he could hug her and she sounded confident but inside she was nervous. She came toward him and began hugging him.

Having a club to attend was rather nice, all thing considered. When you were mainly known as that oddly distant Oda Scion who had a weird name, connections with others could be hard to come by. Thankfully Kumori had developed a love of music and songwriting in her earlier years. Most of her work was a bit unconventional yet had an old fashioned sound to it none the less. All of it had been uploaded onto the internet and she was even planning a blog to publish her lyrics for the world to see. Hopefully that would help bridge the gap between her tendency to be soft spoken and her desire to be more socially active.

A long club meeting had been all the more surprisingly pleasant due to the person leading it. At first she could hardly believe her eyes. Maybe it was just someone who looked a lot like who she thought it was, that was all. Yet the girl's voice and her name confirmed it was indeed Oinu. A girl who had a bit of a reputation in her clan, yet whom had helped Kumori adjust to life among the Oda. Just knowing that someone she'd known for quite some time was in the same club drove her to sing her heart out even more than usual. It was the least she could do given the circumstances.

As a result Kumori's throat had been a bit raw afterward; some of the students had stuck around the room, but she'd gone off to get some water from her locker. It was close enough by that Kumori was able to make it back, hoping to catch Oinu before the girl headed off to pursue other activities. With a smile she rounded the corner just in time to see.. a boy.. hugging the Oda girl. What was that? Did Oinu have a boyfriend? She didn't have a brother here at Edo Bugei as far as Kumori knew. Slowly the older third year stepped up behind the pair, expression stoic as she analysed the scene before her. While her mind was working out that this was spontaneous, her expression looked less thoughtful and more contemplatively threatening.

Finally she spoke up, "That's very cute."

Then she added, "Are you a couple?" followed quickly by an apologetic bow, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend!"

I'll take you to paradise
Say you'll never let me go
It was a nice and warm hug. She was thoroughly enjoying the hug even though this apparently was the first time she saw this baby-faced student. To be honest, she didn't care much for him but it was more that it was relaxing and amusing that he was infatuated with her. But those few seconds of such a comforting few moments was put to a halt. She recognized that voice right at the beat, she glanced at an ebony-haired student standing to the side of her and doe-eyed male student. Nakamura Kumori. It was her cousin. Oinu had felt that her family treated her better than their own daughter when the older girl took residence into her household. She hated her. They weren’t even related. Sure, the unrelated older girl had something her clan could show-off, being a scion after all.

Eventually, things unexpectedly changed between the two girls and it was a surprise the bewildered the first-born clan daughter. A series of events and forced get-together between the two girl led to curiosity and relief. Oinu felt that were the almost the complete opposites in attitude and personalities. It was chaos versus order. Still, they shared something that they loved—singing. It was a wonder how they even ended into that territory of subject but it was a nice change. Now here they were, unrelated close cousins that would most likely have puzzled the elders that assumed the clan daughter loathed. Nowadays, it never took long for her to feel Kumori’s presence hat had grown to notice after many years. It felt just right when that familiar presence was near.

She vaguely heard her cousin’s soft-spoken voice with her saying it was cute though Oinu almost felt like there was a hint of sarcasm but she could be wrong. Although she knew Kumori for quite a few years, she was still a puzzle that she was unable to put together. Or maybe it could be because she was used to her myriad of expressions. Nonetheless, she could feel the baby-faced kid shiver and she almost felt sorry for him—almost. She casually turned her head toward her with a sing-sing voice, “Well, him and me…” and not even a moment he scurried away like a mouse. She loosen her stance and sighed, “I guess he got offended?” and giggled right after. She was a bit annoyed that she didn't even get the kid’s name at all. He was adorable and she wouldn’t mind seeing him again.

Still, it was a pleasant surprise to see her cousin interrupting something she was the process of doing, not that she actually knew what she was trying to accomplish this time. It wasn’t that she didn’t notice her doing practice, they were both concentrated on the new material that they were learning this time. Some of the club members disliked any form of interruptions so they came to a compromise. She took a gulp of cold bottled-water to quench her thirst and continued, “Why’d you go and scare the poor kid away?” with a small pout and continued after a moment, “I thought he was—-sweet” with a fox-like grin. She exhaled slowly and threw her bottle into the trash can from across the room and felt triumphant at the score. “Anyway, what’s up?” and cocked her head.

The history between the elder third year and the full blooded Oda girl had been kind of rocky at first. Kumori had grown up an orphan in the care of a priestess with no real memories of life before the shrine. Life had seemed like it would be idyllic and peaceful no matter what might lurk outside of the shrine's territory. Then Lady Oichi's relic had chosen her and suddenly she became an Oda scion. At first she had felt incredibly out of place living with a newly resurrected clan with something of a negative reputation in the land. It didn't help that the clan's actual daughter was resentful of her; Kumori had been worried that her adoptive caretakers would see her as more important than the clan's actual daughter. Eventually she had managed to start breaking through the resentment and helped Oinu be seen as not quite so wild.

As Kumori had become more comfortable in her new surroundings she'd taken to teasing her cousin a little. Often it was just as a reminder of behaviors which might not be seen as acceptable by the clan. Now that they were both in Edo Bugei she'd relented quite a bit on that, but every now and then such comments resurfaced. Such had been the case with her initial statements upon spotting the more outgoing girl hugging a younger boy. As the boy fled either in embarrassment or fright, Kumori felt kind of awful. Who was she to judge that sort of exchange? Being a scion didn't make her at all superior to someone who had been born into a clan. Getting a hug from a cute boy didn't seem like a terrible thing either.

"I didn't mean to," she apologized before smirking a little, "What would your father think if he saw that, though?"

Then she immediately followed up with, "Sorry.. old habits die hard.. anyway, you sounded great today. Better than me, I'd say."

I'll take you to paradise

She mocked the answer with her bugged ambers eyes into sudden horror toward the question Kumori asked her. It was strangely funny how the other girl seemed so shy and wth a click, smirked like a confident woman. She was definitely a puzzle. She then cocked her head and inhaled a sharp breath, “Completely Horrified,” with exaggerated expressions. There was a hint of deviltry on her facade of innocent eyes. There was hardly much affection for her father with his abandonment she did not expect as a young child. Once he finally got his male heir, nothing was really the same as before. What a traditional father. She used to wonder how life would turn out to be if she was the clan’s heir despite the gender difference. But overtime, she began to realize that it was pointless and useless. She found it quite strange that he suddenly revealed that she was the daughter of one of his concubines. It took so long. She didn't want to admit it out loud but she shed tears at the revelation Nothing would change anyway. Now, she would show off as a cheerful infiltration track student, a grinning foxy woman with an airy persona. There were those times when she would giggle to herself when some would assume that she was an innocent girl. It was hilarious. She wouldn't have it any other way.

“But who gives a shit,” she rolled her amber eyes and casually leaned against the closest desk as she became more comfortable in her position. “Don’t worry about it,” she replied waving her hand and paused for a moment, “Those elders aren't hovering over us here anyway,” as she began spinning her pencil as a habit. Her ambers eyes glinted in the light as if it were a predatory wolf, unconscious or not. It was like the opposite of how most would think she would act. Before coming into the academy, she wasn't exposed to much swearing but her tragic former teacher changed that over time. He had such a harsh and gritty humor that some wouldn't be comfortable with but she was eager and overjoyed to become his student. He was almost of how her father acted back home. She would’ve jumped at the chance there was an option to live with him but unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. Even though she felt that she wasn't his best skilled student, she was sure she made up in enthusiasm and willingness. She wondered if he had something to do with her fast track in moving up in years though she had her doubts. Still, it was a nice to think about it sometimes.

Kumori added that she sounded great and better than herself and rolled her eyes for a moment. “Hold up, really?” she replied with eyebrows twisted into a frown. The older girl was wrong. “You’re way better than that girl. You’re too humble sometimes,” she continued as she cocked her head and looked at her warmly. “Sometimes I wish I sang good like you,” she admitted drifting off in the air. A little jealously thought in her mind would resurface sometimes. She continued, “your singing was brilliant and elegant,” as if trying to search for the right words to describe it. Despite what others who had never met her would assume that she was ditzy and less intelligent based on how she presented herself, she was the opposite of how they thought of her especially in describing music. It did help the club members in improving in pouring their emotions and feelings into their singing. At least she helped in that category. She frowned inwardly remembering those times with her voice fell flat or even too sharp that she could feel members cringe at her mistakes. Even though Kumori might not have been looking, she took a few glances at her. It made her feel reassured and relaxed. It was a weird act but it helped when she felt that she wasn't good enough and even wondered why she was there in the first place.

After, her forehead furrowed into thought and thought of a great idea for them too in improving their singing skills. “It’ll be nice if we could sing together,” she continued with her mouth curved upward. She hoped Kumori would agree to be her partner once again. It felt like it has been such a long time since they actually spent time together—just them for once. It was a wonderful memory of hanging out together as young teens and practicing each time. “Are you up for it?” she added, giving a toothy grin at the other girl and paused for a moment, “then you could give some singing tips maybe?” She hoped her enthusiasm would encourage Kumori to go along with her plans and enjoy time together again. Away from distraction, away from those judging and wary eyes. It'll be nice to let go of facades she planted onto herself to cast away those annoying distractions from herself. It was irritating enough that her father just went up and decided to murder a lord and now she and Kumori, were caught up in those actions of his. Singing was a godsend and relief. She could forget about the real life for once and bask in the musical release. Even though she wasn’t as skilled as Kumori, she did her best to keep up with her. She had to admit, she admired the other girl no matter what others would say about her.

It had always been uncanny just how fox like the younger girl's eyes could become in the right situation. For someone who was generally a pretty nice person overall it did seem a bit unbecoming to Kumori. Yet that was just part of the girl's personality, something that the adoptive cousin had come to accept. More unbecoming, though, was Oinu's choice of language in swearing off what her father would think. Given that Kumori had herself been joking in mentioning that, it was somewhat forgivable. Still it felt a bit jarring to hear that kind of language when you'd spent your early childhood in a shrine where every word was carefully chosen. Ultimately she let it slide.

It had been so long since she'd gotten to spend time with her cousin that such trivial things could easily be cast aside. The older girl nearly giggled at the visual signs of disagreement from Oinu on who had sung better. So much about this girl was so honest. Living among people who hid their intentions or deferred to politeness more often than not, it was refreshing to see. Not that she was one to be totally honest about her own feelings either. That would be a burden on others; open displays of emotion suited Oinu better.

"You at times exceed my skill, cousin. Even if you don't hear it, I certainly do," Kuomri smiled in response to the praise, "Maybe we should just compromise and agree that we're both talented. My singing might be elegant but yours is beautiful and spirited."

Then she paused to think about the suggestion for a moment before nodding. Despite occasionally being able to pick out Oinu's voice from a crowd, she really hadn't gotten to hear it too closely of late. Combined with their recent lack of interaction and the idea of singing together was pretty inviting. She gave it a little more thought before she nodded sagely. There wasn't anything else going on for Kumori at Edo Bugei today anyhow. Oinu's energy and enthusiasm were particularly infectious, which had sealed the deal. The normally reserved scion was smiling happily largely because her cousin's example had rubbed off on her.

"Just the two of us, singing together? You've got yourself a deal, cousin," Kumori consented, "It might be a little hard to give you tips since we have different vocal qualities, but I'll do my best to help."

Then she chuckled, "Even if you are in the lead for admirers. I can tell you no one has ever asked me for a hug like that.. I probably scare them all too much."
