Was that door honestly a bathroom? I know I didn't see shower rooms going down the hallway like in a university... Oh, forget about it, I'll look at it when I get back.

Viola descended the stairs leading to the lounge area she had passed by earlier on her way up to unload her belongings. Mika had pointed out a few minutes ago that this area had a cafeteria in it that would still be open to serve evening partakers like herself. What she didn't explain and what Viola ignored herself earlier while passing though, besides the size of the area, was all of the available activities for students. The variety was unbelievable to her; you could work out, lounge out, pig out, or even swim. The choice was yours. For Viola, at least for now, she decided she wanted to eat as her stomach reigned her in from her amazement to remind her that it was still there and needed food to negate the hunger from not eating for several hours.

She approached the cafeteria and was impressed with the space and selection. At this hour, due to the number of people whom had come before her, the choices were a bit smaller than what she had assumed should be there, but regardless, was able to get a decent meal to satisfy her until morning. The staff working the back area helped Viola with locating what she needed and made sure she was satisfied with what she had.

She departed the cafeteria with a smile and thanked the workers for their assistance and sat in the heart of the lounge to start eating her long awaited meal. The televisions in this area were all news stations typical of most sports bars and sit down restaurants; silenced with the subtitles on for interested parties to understand what was going on. Most of the conversations going on were experts talking about the stability of the Shogunate with varying opinions based on which station you frequented. One or two were tuned into weather channels, but again, nothing interesting, just a forecast of rain in the future. Typical, as Viola would be starting Guard duty soon and needed to prepare if rain were a constant problem.

After seeing the forecast, she brought her attention back to her food as she began eating. For a bit, her mind cleared and she drowned out the rest of the world to focus on what was in front of her. For the first time since she arrived on campus, she was at peace, and knew everything would be alright. It would be a lot better, however, on a satisfied stomach.

The automated doors opened as a student sporting a somewhat jacket-less Elite uniform. The evening had gotten to the last high point of heat before it settled into the evening. She returned into this late evening mostly from doing paperwork filling at the office and promptly taking a nap. Plain water and tie didn’t do caffine justice after waking up to hunger. She stretched her arms in hopes of snagging a bath when the smell of late night dinner had her make a u-turn for the snack bar.

She greeted the student run operation with a wave and piled on a plate of salad and some sandwiches that would have not lasted another day on the display shelf. A bowl of muso soup took up what space the plate had left and it was off to finding a table. Tables were plentiful though but some company would be nice. As soon as she found a table with a fellow dinner member did she head away to get some late coffee from the cafe nearby. Once achieving this did she then formally return to the plate and guest.

“Hi, sorry to not say anything. Mind I join ya?” She asked a rather fresh looking face in the scenery. After asking this did Suishoku took her seat and quickly said a brief thabks for the meal and started picking away at her meal of pretty much soup and salad and half sandwiches.

Viola had taken a few bites into her satisfactory salad, sitting in silence, hardly paying attention to her surroundings. She contemplated taking her phone to check on things back at home, but before her thoughts were finished, a young woman made her way to the table she had sat at and requested a seat. With her mouth momentarily full, she simply gestured her open hand and nodded her head while attempting to finish the bite off so she could speak.

As she was finishing, she noticed something different about the girl's uniform than her own or many others. It had... accents on it. In her brief reading of the school and talking with her escorts earlier, she figured out quickly that this girl wasn't just a random student, but an elite student of the school, one that had a reputation great enough to give her a strong ranked position.

Viola swallowed her bite and began to speak to her, smiling at the opportunity to meet another new face.

"Sorry about that, you caught me with my mouth full. I wouldn't mind some company."

She stopped momentarily to clear her throat, a side effect of trying to swallow her food too quickly. Afterward, she spoke back up to finish her thought.

"My name is Konishi Viola, what's your name?"

To signify a bow, she lowered he head momentarily and raised it. With what words she spoke to indicate her sitting at the table, the girl seemed sweet, something contrary to what Viola expected from an elite student.

She is definitely an elite, but her attitude from what I've gathered is far different than what I expected. I thought they'd be hardened warriors, not seemingly care-free students. Maybe Edo is different than what I thought.

Viola paused her thoughts to wait for the name of the girl before her.

She looked up from stopping to test her hot coffee to slightly bow her head a little to Konishi. The girl looked nice and, most of all, hardly peeved from her intrusion a moment ago. The coffee was set down for a sandwich bite before wiping her mouth to speak more directly with her dining companion. “Yuubae Suishoku,” she greeted as if meeting a friend from yesterday. “Your day went okay so far?” The question leading itself as her hands slowed down to take her time while trying to learn what she can about this fresh face.

Konishi Viola, that’s not a likely mix of naming conventions. This did seem weird but just not usual. There also seemed to be that bright eyed and bushy tailed feel for a hard worker. A quick glance at her basic meal set up. A light dinner choice compared to her plate that would right at home for noontime lunch. She gave the girl a breath before going back and forth on eating a little and speaking a little. Today has left her than hungry than usual. “Long day, hmm? Well, we’ll just have to try keeping cool this summer. Any plans so far?”

Viola took another small bite of her salad as Suishoku introduced herself and, surprisingly, jumped straight into small talk. This was a bit different from her encounter earlier, so with little time to react, she nodded her head, signifying that, though it could have been better to have not left home at all, it was still a good day so far. She swallowed the bite she had and added to the nod.

"Indeed, it'd been quite a busy day, but good. How's your day been?"

Viola attempted to reciprocate the question initially asked as a courtesy and out of respect. She didn't want to offend an elite student, though at this point, she didn't think she would do so. If Suishoku were the type to be a jerk, it would have shown the moment she sat down. With internal relief, Viola dismissed her earlier thoughts wondering about elites being strictly tough men and women and made assumptions that it probably depended on a number of factors like most things in life.

Sui then spoke up asking about her plans and making a small jab at keeping cool in the summer. The heat was already starting to pick up, making the move that much harder, but thank goodness, the worst was yet to come and the escorts did help with things along the way. Viola again cleared her mouth and responded.

"It has been very long. I've been awake since early this morning packing and making my way here. Today is my first day in Edo."

She then took a moment to contemplate her plans. There hadn't been a lot of time to think about what she wanted to do in the short term. Her answer seemed to fall a bit short as she shrugged her shoulders and presented a look on her face to reflect her lack of plans.

"As for plans, besides classes, signing up for track tomorrow and my first meeting with the other guard students, I'm not sure. The only thing I can do is follow my gut and see where it takes me."

With her final sentence, Viola's smile returned to her face, content with her answer to see how things went and make plans based on how her experiences went. She did have an ultimate goal while at Edo, but rather than focus on just that, she needed to know what smaller goals she could accomplish first to get there, yet she hadn't been presented any yet. Her attention shifted then to Sui, whom Viola expected to have been through all sorts of events to place her as an elite student. She gave her full attention to her as Viola lowered her fork into her salad and rested her arms on the table behind the bowl.

"If I'm not prying, how difficult was it for you to become an Elite? I imagine on my way to my ultimate goal, I'll have to reach that point eventually, so I want to be prepared if I can be."

Viola was hoping that her question wasn't too direct or obvious. She knew that the Ikko had raided Edo not too far into the distant past and was possible her promotion was based around that. If it was, and she was responsible for bringing up bad memories, it would make Viola feel horrible, but let her realize that reaching such a goal would be an enormous amount of work, possibly including loss. The thoughts swirled in her mind as she awaited Sui's answer.

“Lectures and review at the office I watch. I don’t think I’ll be ready to do classes that other instructors have already done or covered,” she smiled but sighed and drank her coffee. She didn’t want to do any classes that involved basic first aid as that’s knowledge most students have to gain anyway throughout their time here. Maybe a field carry or something. She wasn’t sure what to teach if ever asked upon.

“Mmn, yeah. Got the fan and windows open to cool off. You’ve been traveling all day though?! Where are you from? The dorms has a bath house you can use if you don’t want the shower in your room.” This girl really was that new! It was also a somewhat forgettable fact that students continue to be enrolled throughout the year than a standard spring enrollment. Scions newly discovered was one thing but that was just that. Traditional students were picked up now and then too although this could be chalked up to availability when someone is ready.

Rather than press to ask if Viola was a Scion or Traditional, the surprise gradually faded off to other topics. Viola had some decent goals so far for tomorrow with Suishoku nodding in approval. “Those would be ideal. You can visit the club building for ideas as well. The third floor houses mostly the teacher’s office.” She tossed in having a mind to just be light on information than floor then too much for their first night. Suishoku ate away to sample and stir her miso soup after its contents sat too long.

“I suppose you were expecting a drill sergeant?” An eye was closed as though slightly wounded for saying so. The uniform did have the marks of an Elite student and mostly worn when doing her office work. Suishoku kept her jacket loose and the plain white blouse under nearth as well to cool off after today’s work. Their question left her a need of a pause so she drank more of her soup to think over. For someone that wasn’t expecting to become one and how the group training was to survive in a haunted forest, it could have been easy. But that would undermine the whole part of being Elite. From what she understood of her own selection, Elite students were recognized by their skills and ability in the end so it wasn’t as easy to ask to become one and received it the same day.

“Hmm, if I have to discourage you then I would suggest to not actively want to be an Elite.” The miso bowl was brought up again and set down finished. Suishoku tried to answer honestly andnless foreboding to adopt a more counselor approach; a suggestion. “The offer will arrive at any given time but you won’t be seeing this given to first years or toward people that hardly spent enough time here as a student. With that said, what are your ultimate goals in mind? Accepting to be an Elite could alter a few things.”

Viola took a moment to continue eating her salad as Sui explained her day. It seemed like it was mainly busy work preparing to teach lower students like herself and lectures to continue her own education. She did forget that Elite year students do get opportunities to teach with the staff to further increase their own skills by showing how things are handled. Viola reckoned that teaching something cements the knowledge by passing it along. If you failed to do that, you were essentially blind leading the blind and, if she remembered right, could be demoted from teaching if found out.

It didn't seem like Sui was too excited to be teaching soon. Perhaps it was nerves or uncertainty about her skills? Either way, Viola offered her view as she finished her bite and positioned her fork in her hands as if to point at Sui.

"I think you'd do well teaching classes. Don't they allow you to shadow the staff teachers before you teach on your own so you know what to expect?"

She wasn't expecting them to be thrown to the wolves as soon as they were deemed fit to teach. On the rare occasion that a new teacher was brought in to most places, they'd be allowed to follow a senior teacher's footsteps for a semester before teaching themselves to see the skills and techniques used to better handle the position. Then again, these were the best students Edo had to offer, so perhaps their form of teaching is to put the students in an environment they're not comfortable with and seeing if they adapt. Viola let her fork down as she perused in her salad for another bite.

"I'm from Amakusa, in the Higo Province south and to the east of Edo. I was driven here, and had a few small hiccups that made the trip a bit longer than it needed to be. I arrived a few hours ago and unloaded my stuff into my room. That did take a couple hours in itself, so I suppose I wasn't on the road all day." Viola had to take a few seconds to determine exactly how long she had rode in the car. In between the pit stops and traffic, she thought it had been several hours, but perhaps she exaggerated a bit by saying it took her all day. She grew a little flustered, realizing this, and spoke back up to correct herself. "Perhaps it wasn't all day, but it was at least a few hours to get here. Sorry, I may have exaggerated the timing a bit." Viola kept a sheepish look of embarrassment on her face as the blood rushed to her cheeks and she looked down at her salad for the final bite. It was commonplace for her to misjudge distance and travel as she hadn't left her province at all until earlier. Without experience, it was simply a matter of ignorance over stupidity, yet she felt silly for not knowing exactly how long the trip took.

"Yeah, I had planned on seeing if there were other clubs I could join. I had a couple in mind, but I'd need to talk to the reps to see if they would fit my schedule and interests." Viola had determined to try and fit in as best she could while she was here. The only thing that really stuck out to her was what she had planned on, though. Track was her main hobby in her home school, so sticking to that was obvious. She considered the Bugei club, but wasn't sure if she'd fit in well with them as she did have some combat training, but wasn't well rounded with actual experience. She decided to see what clubs Sui was in to, perhaps, mentally sway her toward another club and possibly open up avenues of conversation. Viola opened up with her usual smile and spoke up. "What clubs are you a part of?"

Viola listened as she was criticized a bit for expecting what she thought previously about Elite's being essentially drill sergeants. She wasn't fazed by the comment, but still offered a slight bow and apology for being short sighted. "I'm sorry, I actually did believe all Elites were like super soldiers of sorts." She then raised up and allowed her smile to rise back to the surface. She added to the previous though, "Though, I am glad I was wrong. I'm happy that you're able to be so relaxed while you're here. And I'm definitely excited to see you're not a drill sergeant, or my day would have already been ruined." Viola chuckled as she could imagine a six foot wall of muscle and bad ass walking to her, yelling in her face for eating late and asking her to do exercises to "work off the food."

Once she regained her composure, Sui asked for her long term goal while she was here to help guide her along. Viola brought up the same topic mentioned earlier in the night about being an ashigiri guardswoman for either the Shogunate or her own clan. "For now, my plan is to become an exceptional ashigiri for either the Shogunate or, if that fails, my clan's head. I would be following in my mother's footsteps doing that, and I believe it would be a huge honor for her to see her daughter do something like that." She knew her mother would be incredibly proud of her for taking up the mantle that she left to her with her training. Her father would be a slightly different story. He wouldn't be disappointed about her success, but only upset she chose that path over her taking over the church. Viola defended her thoughts by thinking he still had plenty of years left to be a very effective priest while she only had this opportunity to be able to do something more with her life, so rather than waste it, she wanted to take it and be successful.

A determined look made its way across her eyes as she continued to hold her smile and awaited any advice Sui had to offer for continuing down that path.

"Uh, thanks. Coming up with a lesson plan has really been the hardest part," Suishoku admitted with a weak smile in thanks of their sudden confidence. It was odd hearing something like that from a person you just met. The late meal slowly disappeared to empty trays and bowls that the coffee from the cafe upstairs was all that's left. This Viola girl sounds to have her head straight which made the talk less worrying for their future. Suishoku somewhat envied that sort of sure vision of what they want up ahead when she could barely plan her personal life ahead by 48 hours.

"That's not too far off when putting it that way," she smiled before laughing at the sudden fluster that took up Viola. Minor exaggerations in a traveling story was just as common as under scoring the matter like transiting bus stops. "I'm sure it must'av felt like a long ride. It took you a whole day no less so no sense in getting worked up on those kinds of details. What matters is that you made it here in one piece." While Suishoku may have said this with a grin on such travel stories was it all a front of how lucky Viola is. Sometime last year before the Ikko attack was there reports in the papers about a bus transferring future students to Edo being attacked. Driver, a few mentsuke, and the students themselves were slaughtered with travel cautions sent out since then. The whole affair felt so long ago now but it was real enough when putting how Japan had moved past this previous conflict.

Gladly the topic moved on to clubs. Suishoku was busy taking a sip of her coffee while massaging her shoulder when asked what she did as an elective. "Mm," she licked her lips and set the cardboard cup down again. "I'm part of the Ceremony Club and Archery since my first year here. Don't ask if I have a seat rank though as I've never actually participated in an official tournament." Viola voiced how concerned she was about putting in the extra time in her schedule for these actives. Suishoku smiled at the considerate girl and pointed to a wall in the dorms of the general direction the club building was.

"If you ever want an idea on club meeting times, there's a cork board on the ground floor of the club building. Announcements are posted there on meet up times, which clubs are in dire need of members and so on. There's even a wall sign that lists which clubs are on what floor of the building as well." Luckily the new building didn't deviate much from the original lay out of a three story facility. She smiled and jokingly held out a hand as if offering Viola something. "I'm not a head or anything but as few of the senior members hanging around the Ceremony Club, if you ever feel like wanting space for tea and snack, you're welcome to drop by. It'd be great practice for those learning the art of Tea and then some. We'll even let you borrow a kimono for the occasion if you give us a notice ahead of time." The invitation for tea and snacks was always in her sleeve like a business card.

Her arm shifted to rest her chin in it while leaning on the table. The conversation really helping her relax and unwind after doing mission reviews at the office. "Heh, I see. If anything, it's really the people here that help me relax. If you find people you like then Bugei isn't as bad. Buuuut, don't go expecting every Elite will be this casual. I know a few that a bit more formal if you run into them in the hallways compared to this dinner. A few of the combat ones and more noble bloods aren't afraid to pull rank or put a troublemaker in their place." Her eyes shifted toward the girl's dorm wondering if that team senior from the artillery club was still there. Suishoku kept a sore spot for that particular one.

Finally the time came for the topic to be on Viola's future goals. Suishoku wouldn't exactly be an expert in this considering her own issues about the future but what she could grasp was the grounded reality of it. She shifted resting her chin from her right to her left hand as the plan was laid out simply. Route one lead to being a proper solider for the Shogun and the fall back was to the clan; a very typical route that gave summary to many actions and fates of students who finish their time with Bugei. "So you are mostly doing this to honor someone? Your mother sounds like an accomplished woman," she noted the moment those words left Viola. Viola looked like an honest and hardworking gal so there shouldn't be any issues about fools keeping an honor code like the tactician who died selfishly for that.

"Your plan describes the usual way of things. Even if it isn't by failure, if the clan needs you then it's between them and the Shogun to pass you along on where you'll be most useful to. Higher ranks will sway better to your personal interests. If that's what you aim for then I would suggest to work keenly in that direction. Tasks that highlight your talents help higher ups identify your skills to make the most out of them in missions. At the moment you're a blank slate till I look at your student file but even then, the file won't tell me enough about you."
