Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

“I was thinking more on self defense. Duringn my first year training, and still at times, the most common weapon to train with was with a kendo weapon. Light, easy, natural, and gives an idea of an introduction to self defense and awareness. Frankly it would be wasted on those with combat knowledge or had the money and family to acquire the life of training. It would have been a comfort to spare a knowledgeable peer than a foreboding master. A nidan is difficult to get as much as any seat in kyudou for that matter. If there are doubts on teaching or tutoring like that,” she shrugged and fished around her person for a small disposable pen to scratch that off the list. The large aversion to fighting was a bit hurtful toward Suishoku as well. This girl went to sign up to defend a home that wasn’t hers then wants to put away that knowledge for self preservation than learning. She got the impression that Mirai liked kendo but perhaps what happened in Kaga has put that aside and, just maybe, Mirai won’t enlist herself to larger battles.

“Then let’s narrow the list,” she took a bite of the lukewarm meal, her first one for the day, and prodded the paper between them with the pen point. This list needed some fat trimming now that that blunder caused a spark. “Time allowed and combat related can go,” she said and crossed off the pet sitting one as well. If Mirai took too many animals in her care then this too would become problematic. “Where does this leave us. Hmm, shelter work and orphanage volunteers would be easier on time. Those buildings have been gaining some kids in the last year. They could use some assistants.” She explained with the ballpoint pinning the slip to the table. Concerned eyes looked up from it to Mirai on her thoughts while drawing attention of a matter that, not just Mirai, but Suishoku and the others in Bugei and Japan have to think through after this latest Ikko attack. It was the fear she picked up from Mirai did the words find themselves forming in her mouth. “If you want to ensure a safe environment, we can only find one or make one.”

Even in self defence you were harming someone, and that was still the problem. Even if it was so that people could better defend themselves, violence was still violence. Yes, she wanted to help people, and yes, perhaps she was good enough to be able to tutor in some minor stuff, but in this case that was put at odds with an aversion to violence and bloodshed and Mirai didn’t know how to reconcile those two ideas.

Kendo was off the list, then, and Suishoku did indeed scratch it out from the slip of paper, and Mirai was glad to see it go. As much she loved kendo - and she did still practice it to this day - discussion of how she could use it brought her too close to things she absolutely did not want to do at any cost, and it was better for everyone that it was gone.

It was exhausting. She hadn’t expected this exercise to go down that road, and it brought up feelings that Mirai didn’t know what to do with, and that felt tiring to her. But they were moving on from it now, so everything would be calm and easy from that point on.

Mirai was thankful that Suishoku was so easily able to select items from the list that wouldn’t be ideal. And she could even give suggestions of what might be a better option: volunteering at a shelter or orphanage. Mirai actually didn’t mind that idea. It would make a difference and it was something that she felt would be within her abilities, and it would be helping some of the most vulnerable people who needed the help most desperately. Previously it had just been one suggestion among many others but now it had been singled out Mirai could see that it would be a good. Mirai nodded to the suggestion and her frown grew into a smile. “I like that. I think that would be really useful and it wouldn't be too hard to learn...” she paused. “Do you know how to apply to any shelters?”

Suishoku made another comment that bemused Mirai. “If you want to ensure a safe environment, we can only find one or make one.” What did Suishoku even mean by that? Mirai’s throat felt dry again. “I don’t understand,” she said.

"Ah, not really," Suishoku admitted sheepishly after a drawn pause. The pen flipped over so she could tap on the table as she thought over a few people on who to turn to for that one. Hospitals would be so much easier since that would place herself and Nurse Aki as sources of references via community work. After creating several emergency reserves and spending the night on a few cots would at least give an idea of which hospital in the local area of Edo had some quick responsive doctors on hand. Shelters were places she didn't work with as much. After weeding out a fairly short list of people, the pen flicked back over to the ballpoint end and write down the principals name and Mizuha-sensei's. "If anyone could point you to a place, I'm sure they would know some. Hosokawa speaks very highly of looking after us students and his name is often included in a few charities. I'm sure he'd love to see you volunteer. Mizuha-sensei seems to know several people if ever lost for guidance and friendly to turn to. Nurse Aki might but I rarely talk to her about those things when helping at their office."

She smiled and took another bite feeling rather pleased to have come up a great starting source. Mizuha-sensei was included too for the sake of her being an older member of the staff. Her reasons for mentioning the school nurse was also an optional source that she wasn't 100% about but it seemed like a good idea to at least add in a third name to the list. Suishoku hummed a small note to herself and went to try digging into her meal when Mirai gave a more concerning tone. Unable to just eat so gleefully before her friend, Suishoku set her fork down and took up the glass of water instead.

"Hrm, how to put it,"
the Elite began more as a means of talking the answer out of herself since one wasn't readily available. The words simply came but she didn't want to scare of Mirai again with how their talk about kendo went. The water glass was brought to her lips as though gathering the words on the tip of her tongue for a minute then set it down without taking a drink. "How to put this," her eyes turned to motion to the other guests in the cafe. The cafe had its patrons who ate and drank peacefully. Each person carrying on with their lives as best as they can even with news papers in their hands reported trouble in other countries.

"Let's take this cafe. Nice and quite, mm? Could almost forget about what's going on when you have a good meal and warm company, right?" Suishoku smiled fondly a moment then turned to the girl to keep a serious face from accidentally appearing for the other customers to see as she resumed. "Today, we found this place but someone had to make a cafe like a cafe to be how it is right now. Think of it like that when going to help those kids."

Suishoku had good ideas of where to look, even if she couldn’t name any herself. The people Suishoku named all seemed like sensible suggestions who might know somewhere she could offer her assistance, and between three of them there was bound to be at least one suggestion of somewhere to go that Mirai would like and find acceptable. “That’s a good idea,” Mirai said, nodding slowly, and a smile spread across her face. “I think I will ask them. You’re right, they would know somewhere to go and with three suggestions they must have one good idea. Thank you for your help, Suishoku.” She dipped her head in a small bow - she knew that Suishoku would more likely than not wave it off and say it was nothing, but it wasn't nothing, and Mirai wanted to acknowledge that.

Mirai sipped her coffee again. Its warmth was calming, and now along with the reassurance that she had a plan of what to do and a plan of how she could get there. She could finally do something that would be of use, of value, and she felt better for it.

Even Suishoku seemed to have difficulty explaining what she’d meant by that comment. Eventually she did describe it, the analogy of the cafe they were sitting in, and in all honesty Mirai was still a little confused by it. “Do you mean, uh,” Mirai searched for the words to try to clarify what Suishoku meant. But using the analogy of something safe and comforting put her more at ease than the unknown of what Suishoku might be trying to imply. “Like... like someone had to build it?” She gestured vaguely to the walls and roof.

She laughed a bit, knowing how all this was getting confusing on what to call a safenplace to be and how to make it. Mirai took it the most literally between the two girls. “If it comes down to doing that,” she chuckled ligt heartedly. “Like a home. That home feeling of being safe and somewhere to belong and go to. That kinda sense, I hope.” Calling this cafe like a home give a bit too mich credit to the owners but when thinking of a home, surely everyone had an idea of what makes a place feel like home. What that cozy home feeling meant or that phrase of being ‘at home’ stood for. In tryig to be a bit fanciful in how to describe that feeling, Suishoku hoped that maybe this time she got a better analogy.

When thinking of a house and home soft of feeling, her eyes lit up at another way to put it. “A place you have someone waiting there for you to say ‘tadaiima’ and the person at that place says ‘okaeri’. That would seem like a sort of place to be, won’t it?” Although Suishoku did brace herself a little if Mirai started to key that into maid cafes. That may just send her worrying for the girl. Suishoku ate into half her breakfast while listening to some news feed playing in the background between songs such as tournaments in preparation for local sumo stables.
