Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 7/10/2017 A blood red summer has come. As the Edo Bugei students finish facing off with the ikko forces all across the nation a massive steel ship floats towards Edo Harbor. The final battle between the Ikko Ikki rebels and the Edo Bugei students is about to begin. The lingering question now, just how much of Edo will be left standing once the battle ends?

Kire hadn't been expecting much and that was what he got from the first tunnel. A small room, how very pointless and bound to be a trap of some kind. Probably full of sharks or something. No way was he going in there. The second tunnel seemed much the same. Nothing good was going to be at the end of it. A belief reinforced when he cut himself on the jagged wall outside the cave. He winced and bit back a curse. He didn't believe in bad omens, not like this, but he did believe in bad luck and it seemed to be hovering all around. His hand had only just started healing.

With minor grumbling, he dug into his bag for his spare bandages. He had planned to use them on his palm once this was all over but now they had to be wasted on a stupid cut that was completely avoidable. Once they were out of this filthy hole, he'd have to give it a proper cleaning and seeing to. Salt water had salt, yes, but it was also naturally filthy. Good and bad sides to everything. Still, it was more sanitary than a sewer or whatever land type cave they might have ended up digging through.

Once he'd dealt with that, he looked at the tunnel again. Sharp edges, that wasn't a good sign, nor was the fact that they were caused by somebody forcing their way through. He considered it a bad sign not because he suspected the sword of being down there though. No, he suspected it even less now. Kire shined his light along the edges and partway into the tunnel this time. Now he was looking for blood that wasn't his own or scraps of cloth torn off by such a forceful and destructive penetration.

RPC POST

Nobuyori saw Kire cut himself and quickly jumped down from the platform he was on to the ruined middle tunnel. The edges looked sharp and jagged and Kire had a clear cut on his hand.
"You should be more careful." he suggested to her. They had no clue what kind of insects or diseases could be hanging out in a place such as this. To make things worse the salt water entering the wound would likely cause intense stinging and the damp cave atmosphere would only help to create more infection. Fortunately, Nobuyori was able to heal people thanks to his water spell talismans he carried with him. Pulling one of his seals from his jacket he flicked his wrist as the seal wrapped itself around Kire's hand. The seal began to glow as the bleeding was quick to stop and the cut began to slowly close itself.
"This will heal it without infection."

Looking at the jagged tunnel it didn't look as though the destruction on the tunnel had been made naturally. On the contrary, it looked as though the tunnel had been messed up by having something cut against it or bashed into it. They looked as though the tunnel had been cut as Nobuyori placed his naginata against a damaged part of the tunnel. The blade would seem to fit the groove quite well. Not just that groove but a few others as well.
"Could it have been samurai, or even monks?" he asked Kire curiously.
"Though it wasn't as though samurai could just barge their way through the tunnel right?" The edges of the tunnel would likely destroy any weapon that was just bashed against it. The tunnel had no clear reason to be cut into like that and if the samurai simply disarmed themselves they would likely have been able to pass through without any incident.

"I heard the Shimazu samurai can get fairly rough...but.." he said to himself as he shined his light down the tunnel a bit.
"Do you want to follow this tunnel instead?" he asked.

Aideen lets decide what we want to do before we NPC post again.

Kire's eyes widened when Nobuyuri jumped down. "Are you crazy, Azai?" He asked though he didn't resist letting the kid look over his hand. He rolled his eyes as the scion used magic. It wasn't that bad, he'd certainly had worse. Plus he'd already wrapped it, magic was neat and all, but it didn't need to be wasted on such little things. "You jump down onto a stone floor that is full of water and ranges from smooth as glass to full of shifting stones. You fall and take yourself out, that's doing nobody any good." He lectured.

Once the magic had done it's thing, Kire pulled his hand back and gave it a shake. It did feel better, but still, he was a bit bitter about it, magic always rubbed him the wrong way. He looked up to see Nobu comparing the blade marks in the rock with his own weapon. That was...odd. Who the hell would take a blade to stone? He'd asked that before, right? Back with the carving up further in the tunnel. He was still pretty sure that it would be an idiot.

"Maybe it's you from the future." He said, less than seriously. "Magic is weird, guessing gets us nowhere. We've been operating on the idea that only one person is down here, could be more, could be less." Kire rubbed his brow with thumb and pointer fingers. "I don't think it's down there, but I also think that anyone with a lick of sense wouldn't have started with the smaller rooms so maybe they've already gone through the big one." He sighed.

"Fine, you can lead the way, watch out for any sharp rocks, I guess." He wasn't happy about going down this crevasse. It seemed just the kind of thing to lead to a trap, but then so did this whole damn hole. He hadn't wanted to do any of this crazy spelunking, he'd signed up to identify a sword. It wasn't supposed to be this much of a pain in the ass.

NPC POST

With their minds seemingly made up the boys decided to go down the tunnel that had seemed to have been damaged by weapons. The tunnel itself was slick on the floor, but the edges all looked damaged. Something jagged and heavy had been forced through the tunnel, and it seemed like a mass of blades. Only one of them would be able to fit through the tunnel at a time. However, as they passed through the tunnel they would see a small receiving room. At least that is the size of it. The room didn't seem to have any entrances or exists save for the way the boys had entered. Inside the room was a small chest that looked as though it had been flooded with water multiple times.

The chest had black lacquer wit old trimmed a golden lock. From the look of it the box seemed as though it was at least 200 or more years old and the lock had become completely rusted and rough with time. It wouldn't open easily, but with enough force would certainly open up. The side of the boxes looked as though they had been kicked in multiple times and it hung at an odd angle against the wall.

The cave walls around them appeared to have been cut up and bludgeoned multiple times. Deep, thick gaps that could only have been made by someone cutting the walls and possibly even slamming a large hammer into them.

As Kire lectured him Nobuyori just smiled a bit.
"I'm fine though, that is what matters." he said in response. After all Nobuyori's childhood was spent on the water, and his relic was water element. His entire life Nobuyori had never feared the water or what lurked under it, and even if it killed him someday he wasn't going to start now, not even with the risk of water flooding into the cave and killing them both hanging over their head like some quiet reaper waiting to steal the very air from the lung of both boys.

With the talisman that had healed Kire's hand slipping back into his overcoat Nobuyori grabbed his naginata and kept it out in front of him like a walking stick as he carefully went through the damaged tunnel. Sadly the other side didn't contain much. An extremely old, beat up box that looked as thought it had been slammed against the cave wall by the tide, and a vast amount of slash and hammer marks all around them. The sheer amount and depth of them caused the future lord of Omi to slowly move in a small circle as he looked at them.

"Was someone upset about that box, or the fact they didn't find anything in this cave?" he asked more out loud than to Kire. All of the markings would have taken considerable force to create and had clearly been done out of rage. Could they have failed at opening the old box? Also, how long had it been in this room? It wasn't that far from the entrance after all.

It may not have been but Kire saw the response as a rebuke. It didn't make him angry, just further annoyed that he was trapped down in a death trap of a hole and now he was there with a magical punk who had way too much confidence. Scions always seemed to, strutting around the school. You could always tell the kids who had been blessed by pure luck of being born. Still, Kire dropped the subject, if the Azai wanted to break his own ankles, let him. Better to focus on the future, which seemed to consist of going into the second most unpleasant hole down here.

He followed Azai along, it wasn't easy going. He felt like rough wood being put against sandpaper. Or maybe a file. It was rough. But eventually they had made it out. The new chamber was as damp and unpleasant as the first, but it seemed to be providing them the best clue they'd received since the carving in the wall. Kire glared at the box. That was a trap. Or something stupid. Probably both. "You can try opening that, just make sure it faces away from you." Whatever was in there had to be pressure sealed or something based just on the lid, the box had been bashed around so often and so hard that any other trap would have set itself off ages ago.

The idea that the blade was in there didn't even cross Kire's mind. It was too small for anything but a small knife and they wanted a sword. "Could be both," Kire replied, "or maybe this hole was carved out, but that seems pretty unlikely." He wondered if there was a key hidden inside the cave too. With any luck, they wouldn't need it. The lock seemed pretty old.

As Kire spoke Nobuyori looked at the box. It definitely wasn't large enough to hold a sword, even if the sword was completely split into it's pieces. On top of that the mission was essentially on a time limit due to the possibility of high tide drowning them both. Looking at the box again Nobuyori shook his head.
"If the frustration actually came from trying to open the box then I agree, it might be a trap. Lets go back to that high up tunnel and proceed forward. If we waste time on the box we'll drowned in this tiny room with no way out." he said bluntly.

Giving one final look at the box he began to walk off. He figured if Kire really wanted whatever was in the box then he could open it himself or take the box with them. For once the young noble was completely agreeing with Kire. Now wasn't the time to focus on a trap.

"Even if it is some rare knife or money its not like the school wont give us more money or better weaponry anyway." then he took one last look at the damage to the walls.
"This has to be fresh, right? Will you be ok if we find whoever made these?" he didn't know Kire's combat strength after all. Between the moisture in the cave and the fact he was already moving around Nobuyori's hair stuck to his head a bit and seemed more straight then usual.

Oh great, now that they had entered death cavern and found a completely anonymous box, the Azai wanted to leave. Whatever, he wanted to leave too so that was fine. He just had to hope that the box wasn't important. Well, if it was water proof then it could hold something valuable. Not like money, but historically. Actually, if the sword had been split into its component parts, certain parts could be preserved inside a box that side, not the blade itself but things like the tuba and the wrappings and whatever else were a part of the ancient artifact. Kire wished that hadn't occurred to him.

"They could be recent, could be not recent. Water would wear the edges down over time but that'd take years so I don't know." He looked around at the bashed Wales. It had to be a weapon, not something like the chest banging around in the high water. He wasn't going to try and convince himself that it was the box either, that would be lucky and Kire didn't get lucky.

"You lead the way. I'll handle myself if I have to." He was confident that he could do something. Sure, he wasn't the best fighter, but he was strong and didn't fly off the handle. The marks on the walls were caused by somebody strong but who also maybe went a little crazy. Besides, there were two of them down there. That had to count for something. "But something has just occurred to me. When I made my assumptions about the sword, I didn't really consider magical bullshit having an affect on the holes in the wall. We may have to check all three, and with time against us, that small hole might not be an option after we check the big one. I think you migh have to give it a shot."

"Wait," the boy said in response. He looked at the box and then at Kire. Walking over to the box he contemplated taking it with him. Neither of them had a way to carry it properly, and if they drowned then the box wouldn't allow them to float. If anything it would likely weigh them down and prove difficult to carry through the various corridors of the cave system. Deciding firmly to let the box go he turned to Kire who suggested he go and check the smaller cave.

For a moment he wanted to question if Kire wanted him to get stuck in the small cave and die. It was a risky possible waste of time to go ahead and check it. However, it was also true that they wouldn't have time later.
"Alright. Bring the box with us or leave it. I'll hurry and go check the small cave." and with that the boy gave on final look to all of the slashes on the cave wall. Whatever had made them wasn't here right now, and that is what mattered.

He then went back to the central cave and went to check the smallest tunnel.
"Just don't go off to the higher cave without me in case something happens." he didn't say it as some sort of royal order or demand, it was an honest request. Right now Kire was the only person in the entire world that Nobuyori could trust. Then he handed his naginata to Kire. Fortunately if Kire tried to stab him then his robes would be able to somewhat shield him. It wasn't that he didn't think Kire was bad per. say, but the past year had taught him that trusting people in general could sometimes have terrible results. No one knew who at the school could be an Ikko spy and the small spaces and fact they are alone would give Kire the perfect chance to kill off the future lord of Omi right here.

As at least Nobuyori left the room, leaving the fate of the mysterious closed box to Kire, the young Azai moved towards the smallest opening. It seemed as though he would have to get on all fours in the water just to move through it. However, as the boys entered the connecting area they would realize that the water seemed a bit higher than before. Instead of simply splashing around in a thin pool of water Nobuyori would now have to full submerge his hands to crawl through the smallest tunnel.

On the other side of the tunnel he would nothing of note unfortunately. It would led to a small pool of water in a rounded out cave that seemed like the inside of an igloo. Due to the constant coming and going of water the sides, much like the other cave, seemed incredibly smooth. Inside was nothing more than the water collecting around him and what appeared to be a mark in the center of the ceiling as though a sword or naginata had stabbed into it more on accident than by design. Either way it seemed hardly remarkable. Though the cave would clearly show that the water in the cavern was beginning to rise.

As he looked closer Nobuyori would also notice a series of spiders in the hole. The spiders seemed extremely dark in color and one had to wonder just how toxic they may be.

Kire stared at the box. He didn’t like it, but leaving it behind also seemed like a problem. Frankly, this whole place was a problem. A mystery box where a sword was rumored to be hidden, mysterious passageways that may or may not have been natura, none of it felt real. It was like a puzzle out of a game, each path would lead to something you needed but you had to backtrack. Basic game theory, but this wasn’t a game. This was real life in a hellish hole finding an item from a hundred years ago. Well, his fears and suspicions would be confirmed based on what was found in the tiniest hole.

He looked back at the retreating Asia and then at the marks in the tunnel. Somebody had been very determined to get in. If this was a puzzle, he didn’t want to have to backtrack here. A video game would require him to leave the box and come back. “Screw this.” He muttered under his breath and wrestled the heavy box up and out of the tunnel. It wasn’t easy. Back in the main cave, he dropped the box in the water. He took the naginata and shrugged his shoulders. “Don’t have to worry about that.” There was no well in hell he was going to go wandering off alone. That’s how people died, although, sending people into dark holes alone or getting left behind was also a good way to get killed. He shivered and wished he hadn’t spent so much time in arcades.

With not much else to do, he kept his flashlight sweeping back and forth, just in case anyone was coming after him from ahead or behind. The seconds ticked by and he felt more anxious with each passing one. Grab whatever’s in there, if anything is and get back out here.” He called down the little hole. “The sooner we get out of here, the sooner I can relax.”

“The sooner we get out of here, the sooner I can relax.” said Kire, his words echoing through the tunnel Nobuyori was crawling through. The young Azai feeling more unpleasant with each step forward as his knees and hands felt more and more soggy. On every level it was degrading for a man of the Azai clan. "That makes two of us." Nobuyori said back towards Kire. He was sure the boy would hear his voice due to how well the tunnel echoed. Then soon he entered the hole.

As he used his cell phone and light he tried to look around the small cave. That is when he saw it, a large hole in the ceiling. He then realized what was in the hole. In the hole was a massive amount of spiders. Nobuyori's eyes went wide. If he tried to kill the spiders with magic he might collapse a cave on himself. If he screamed it may cause Kire to try to come to him and trap them both, or make the boy think he would be better off alone. Either way it Nobuyori just stared at the spiders and like a beast from hell made massive splash waves as he crawled back towards Kire at easily three times the speed as he looked slightly panicked. It wasn't that it was a hole full of spiders. It was the fact that it was a hole full of a lot of spiders that all looked highly poisonous.

Panting hard and quickly grabbing his naginata back he pointed it at the small cave.
"It is full of venomous spiders. Not recommended at all." he said. He didn't notice any other details about the cave, simply the spiders.

Now that two caves had been explored. The only path left was the one above them. Unfortunately they would need to worry as the water level began to rise. To make matters worse the chest that Kire picked up, in spite of it's size, would seem to easily be 25 pounds by itself. Though if he tried to move it he wouldn't heard much movement inside the chest. Whatever was inside didn't seem to be made of multiple separate objects.

The boys would have to swiftly move towards the upper path up a serious of slick steps. The cave up above was massive and long. The walls seemed fairly in tact and the path seemed to seemed to get wider and more narrow at points before ending in a large pool of water. The pool itself seemed extremely salty and deep. It would be up to the boys to either turn back using the rising waters or dive into the salty water pit and see what was on the other side.

Kire looked around the cave and regretted the vast number of decisions made by him as well as those made by his parents. All of them led to being stuck in this cave with wet feet that were getting wetter as the water was starting to rise. He had hoped that there would be more time. After all, how many times could the tide rise and fall in a day, only once right? He regretted not researching tides, but why would he have to? He assumed they had the damn sword, or that it would be easy to get to. He was a brilliant bladesmith, not some cave jumper.

Once Azai had come back through the hole, he passed the guy his weapon back. "Spiders? You sure they weren't, like, crabs? I didn't know spiders were water animals." It wasn't that he doubted the other kid's words, more that he was hoping that the kid was wrong. Poisonous spiders in a flooded cave in the dark. This whole mission was awful. "Well, nothing to do about it. Let's go." he kicked the lock box over to the long steps and used it as a stepping stone. Leaving it here was good enough, he had no interest in dealing with a treacherous climb while carrying the box. They could grab it on their way out.

He made his way forward but stopped at the pool His stomach cought in his throat and he felt dizzy. An inky abyss into possibly nothing. What a nightmare. "What is wrong with people. Hasn't anyone ever heard of a bank vault?" He muttered and leaned against the wall. Kire took a long, slow breath to steady his nerves. "That shit can go to another cave or it could be where the damn sword is. You can make waterproof bindings and stuff. But damn." Knowing their luck so far, there would be another tunnel somehow in that pit. And who knew if it would lead to an air cavity or you'd get caught in it and drown. But then, there was still the mystery dweller. They might be somewhere here too. More indication that there was further to travel. Kire looked at the Azai.
