Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 02/17/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

This special lesson had fostered a new appreciation for the Edo Bugei school master in Shinsuke. Not only was the man well versed in all the things the students had questions about, but he was quite candid about his opinions. Within the diplomatic circles his own family frequented it was more the norm to hide your true feelings and opinions so as not to tip your hand. Something about how readily Hosokawa-sensei answered questions about potential inter-clan strife was reassuring to Shinsuke. Here was a man who wouldn't stand for squabbling and nonsense on his watch.

"I'm interested in learning more about opportunities to visit or study abroad as well. Are there any special qualifications that a prospective study abroad student should possess? I'd imagine it'd differ depending on the location and nature of the study program," Shinsuke asked, uncertain if he was going to pursue it himself or suggest it to his sister. Regardless it'd be useful information to have! He had talked to Junko about possibly being an overseas diplomat, so maybe this would be a way to dip his toes into the pool, so to speak.

Then after a moment another thought came to him. Scratching his head a bit absent-mindedly he asked, "Also, are there any books in the library you'd recommend for further study about the school's history? I'd like to look into things more deeply."

"We actually got through the school's history quicker than I expected. Did you all have any other questions?" Yumiko blinked a bit at the question. She didn't expect the Headmaster to sum up the school's history that quickly. Yet here it was. They had gone through and now the students got to ask questions. As Suishoku asked, and Shinsuke asked, Yumiko thought carefully of what she could ask. The other two seemed to have much better questions than she did.

Thinking carefully she finally thought she had a good question to ask.
"How will future generations know about us?" she asked the question carefully. She was a poet at heart, she came from a line of poets, and she recently thought a lot about famous poets she read even hundreds of years after they had passed away. She herself didn't need to be remembered or recognized, but clearly the school kept logs of the students who attended it.

"Hmm, I wonder if other schools follow similar restrictions like Bugei does when it comes to their own Scions. Or," her own went to dreaded as she thought of what she assumed to be a more complex matter. "how much paperwork someone has to go through just to do a foreign exchange student thing." Suishoku's thoughts made the headmaster smile a bit and laugh.
"I'm interested in learning more about opportunities to visit or study abroad as well. Are there any special qualifications that a prospective study abroad student should possess? I'd imagine it'd differ depending on the location and nature of the study program," added Shinsuke.
"The exchange paperwork is difficult, but generally yes. Most schools keep a solid eye on their students, scions or traditional. Though in other countries they have schools specifically for scions only. The shogunate thought that the people of Japan should know Scions and not feel differently from them, so our school has scions and traditional students. Now, in regards to how to be part of the program, that is an individual basis you would have to talk with me and the other teachers privately I'm afraid."

The headmaster then waited for the students to ask their questions. First again was Suishoku.
"Sensei, is there anything more us students should be wary of besides the usual rules and being friendly toward others?" The Headmaster sipped a bit of tea, making a serious face and looked at all three of the students.
"I want you all to treat the people of Edo as well as you can. Even when they are rude or violent." he then put his tea down but continued to look at the students.
"When I first became headmaster, Edo Bugei and the people of Edo didn't get along well. When I was a student here we didn't leave campus much, the people of Edo didn't get to interact much with us, and we mostly kept to our own social classes. The current Shogun and myself both felt uncomfortable about this. We are not some giant far away castle on a mountain side. The people of Edo live with us, and us with them. Many of Edo's citizens are still unsure of Edo Bugei's students, but we all live in this city together. SO I will ask you to not shy away from them, and leave campus when you can. Interact with them, treat them as the people from your own home towns." it was a plea directly from the Headmaster. One could also sense him bowing as he said it. He wanted the people of Edo to believe in the Bugei with all of their hearts, and seemed focused on making it happen.

Next Shinsuke asked
"Also, are there any books in the library you'd recommend for further study about the school's history? I'd like to look into things more deeply." as Yumiko asked a similar question.
"How will future generations know about us?" The Headmster's serious face made a keen smile. Much like with Suishoku earlier he always enjoyed the students wanting to learn. As the head of an academy how could he not love the students willingness to learn about various subjects?
"First, Ms. Tagami, your question. Some of the student's work such as poems, essays, etc. are kept in an archive in the library. Mr. Todo, you and Ms. Tagami can find these archives by asking the librarian to let you go downstairs. The basements of the school library contain many documents slowly being uploaded to the school's online servers. Various parts of the archives are arranged by school year. Here you will find various written works and even photos of past students. Year books as well. Now, lets say one more question a piece and we will call this meeting done for the day."

Suishoku checked back on that doughnut and onigiri box and helped herself to a bit more breakfast now that her drink is long gone. The exchange program did sound appealing if the paperwork can be done, as the Headmaster confirmed, it was going to be extensive. "They don't?" She responded when the schools outside of their country went for the Scion only approach. Japan must seem weird in their eyes to have changed over to a more open format some decade ago. Of the schools to transfer into were England, Korea, and China. England or China would be the more popular votes if students wanted to go there.

She picked up an onigiri to nibble on when thinking it over if she were to want to try England or China first. Upon recalling that the schools were more Scion focused than anything made her worry if going there would have the students expecting some 'samurai' archetype or someone combatant. That would pose a problem. Having that in mind, she quietly set aside more thoughts on transferring for now and focused on the relations with the rest of Edo.

She remembered back on an earlier mission to look for the Dutch embassy's kidnapped daughter. Not many people seemed thrilled to see Bugei students around in uniform and more so greeted wholesomely. The contrast was night and day when students wandered around not in uniform where staff would greet them and just be regular customers. "I guess when we go out on missions within Edo, people are uncomfortable because it's obvious why we'd be walking in the area. It's like suddenly seeing more police than usual around a district but not knowing why makes the whole setting feel uncomfortable." Suishoku expressed with a sigh. It was only when they were more straight forward with the antique shop were they able to get information then told to leave.

Now they were all offered one last question. She finished her onigiri and fiddled with the doughnut. There was something about the school that wasn't mentioned so much in the whole lecture. "How new is the installment of Elite year students? Have they been around long and what becomes of most Elite years? Does the school continue to keep ties with their students even after they leave or get reclaimed by their clans?"

Studying abroad certainly had its appeal, though Shinsuke was indeed thinking quite similar things to Suishoku. Assuming that the types of scions which those partner schools championed reflected what he knew about foreign powers, it might be hard for a non-warrior type to fit in. Obviously he assumed that England, Korea and especially China must have Scions whose abilities were in areas other than fighting. Especially in the case of England he assumed that warriors would have priority - Europeans seemed only to be interested in imperial expansion at the expense of others from what he knew. China too must have at least some focus on warriors, since they had fought off European invaders in the past and might fear a second coming of that. Korea might be the most welcoming of a non-combat Scion but history between Japan and Korea was difficult to say the least. Choosing a place to attempt to study was going to take some serious thought.

He nodded at the Headmaster's request that they interact with the people of Edo as much as they could. As he sipped at his drink a little more he recalled his father remarking that knowing the common people was important for a ruler. Being in tune with their needs prevented an unhappy population, which in turn meant more productivity for the province. Should disaster strike the clan would need an army drawn from that population, so best to have a loyal base to draw that force from. Shinsuke personally didn't want to think about his people suffering, either, so it was a personal mission for him to have a strong connection to them.

As the final round of questions was announced, he thought of a question to ask, "What would occur if a student who is a clan heir, heavens forbid, had to ascend to the leadership of the clan? Would they be forced to leave the school, or would some form of correspondence education be possible?"

RPC POST

Yumiko's eyes went a bit wide. The thought of going to the mysterious zone known as the library basement and reading the works of older Bugei students was amazing. No doubt could be made that right after this Yumiko would be going straight to the library's front desk.
"Thank you Headmaster." she said very politely.

She had no doubt that she would thank the Headmaster again after she had actually got into the archives proper. Though, for now, each student had been given one final question. Suishoku's was about elite students, and Shinsuke's question was about clan heads. Thinking hard Yumiko tried to figure out a question that she always wished to learn about how the Bugei worked. Then she finally thought of it, a question close to Shinsuke's that had bothered her for a long time.
"Sir, what happens to the families of Bugei students who have passed away?" the question was sad, but it was something she felt a dire need to know.

NPC POST

(OOC: FINAL ROUND)

The Headmaster listened seriously to the student's questions. Each one had decided to end the morning with rather serious questions. On some level it didn't surprised the Headmaster given the three students he currently sat with. All three had separate things that must weigh upon them. Taking a sip of tea he thought it best to address each one as it had been asked.

"How new is the installment of Elite year students? Have they been around long and what becomes of most Elite years? Does the school continue to keep ties with their students even after they leave or get reclaimed by their clans?" it was a good question and something the Headmaster had certainly not spoken on. After all it was something he wasn't often asked about by the average student.

"At the start, every student of Edo Bugei, during the school's first phase, could be considered elite. If only in terms of social status. Elite students as we know them now came about after the increase concern with foreigners. Elite students, as you all may know, can come from any background or year. This is because while the standard Bugei student does missions, or takes classes, the school still needs to tend to the emergencies of the country. Elite students represent the peak of students we believe can effectively respond to the Bugei' most troubling missions." he said proudly.

"Now, in terms of graduating. Elite students can graduate once they have reached the standard graduation age. So, I would say roughly 21 years of age. They usually go on to work as high level members of their clans, or sometimes as direct retainers of the Shogun. Sadly, these high position leave them little time to correspond with myself and the other teachers. We do try our best to keep in touch with them though, as the staff tend receive letters from previous students from time to time." he said proudly. He himself often received letters from past students and current clan heads alike.

With the talk of clans in mind he then turned to address Shinsuke's question.
"What would occur if a student who is a clan heir, heavens forbid, had to ascend to the leadership of the clan? Would they be forced to leave the school, or would some form of correspondence education be possible?" he had asked. The Headmaster was a bit shocked that Shinsuke said heavens forbid and treated it as such a horrible affair. Though he wouldn't let that come out of his mouth.

"We have a few students right now in fact, that are clan heads." he replied while putting down his small cup of tea.
"If a clan lord passes away, and a student must replace them, then that student is given two months leave from the school to settle affairs an stabilize their homeland. After these two months the student returns to the Bugei and a group of close advisers or family members handle the province while this new clan head attends the Bugei. It is accepted that if a rebellion or important provincial issue arises they will have to leave the Bugei for some time and must check in from time to time with the staff. I hope that answers your question. While we want you all to learn, we don't want to put the livelihood of anyone's clan at risk."

Then finally was Yumiko's rather serious question.
"Sir, what happens to the families of Bugei students who have passed away?" it was clearly an important question no matter how you looked at it.

"They are taken care of." of course he planned on going more in depth but needed to at least help calm the mood down a bit first.
"When a Bugei student first passes away, the school pays for their funeral, and the family is also given financial support based on the student's rank and years at the Bugei." though even hated how that answer sounded. It still sounded too mechanic even to him.
"The non-Headmaster answer, however, is that no amount of money and nice memorial can bring back a lost child. I use my clan's own money to visit the families of lost students from time to time. We also inform the families that if they need any help, or are suffering, they can turn to the school. Many think that just a person attends the Bugei, but this academy exists to protect the entire country. Protection does not always mean combat." the look on his face was not strong, or hiding anything. His expression looked absolutely sincere. The Headmaster cared for each and every student at the academy without question.

"I"d rather not end on such somber notes. Could you all end by telling me your favorite thing about the academy?" he asked them with kind eyes. Even the Headmaster, arguably the strongest person at the academy, was still human and didn't wish to end the morning with talks of death.

All the questions asked left a lot of things to consider over. For her own, she thought that Elite students were all based on combat ability in boosting their elevated status. What the headmaster just shared was an aspect she couldn't have seen even when told by Izuki-senpai about why he decided to test her, Kumori, and Eriko out in that creepy forest and after. The ability to act effectively, huh. Suishoku somehow found some comfort in knowing this folded her arms and thought about what was shared to the others.

That Todo guy brought up a great point too when it comes to clan heads. She always thought that when something happens to a clan then the leader had to go lead it. This may have happened once before and that student hasn't been seen since. People thought they became the new leader but circumstances may have been different. It was good knowing that the student in question would only be gone a short time, meaning, if Nobu were to be called away back home then he'll be back in two months. Very good information to know along with what would the billing rates be with texting. Pondering on this lighter note was met with a more downer question Yumiko brought.

Yumiko brought up about the dead where Masumi's death steamed from. Suishoku tried to nibble on her doughnut despite feeling full on breakfast. Students have died before and services had happened or not. She heard that the school was to take care of it all and tried not to get too sentimental about it. The panic and fear of living out weights the scant memories of those rarely known. The school must have taken a large hit when the earthquake happened. A numbing feeling of trying to get by when the school had it worst to lose soo many lives in an instant and having to pay respected for each and every family. It's a wonder the school remained standing and funded after that...

But what about something good about the school? Sure there was the education given and safe boarding to boot as material values but what was something Suishoku found that felt personally good about it? That made her wonder about the school. She honestly wasn't gun-ho for going. Going to Bugei was a matter of having to and being told to. Those who willfully went to Bugei had a more open choice about it but what could she find her. The doughnut became a half eaten semi-circle while trying to have something come to mind.

What did come to mind were thoughts of Nobu. Meeting him was what gotten Suishoku to feel less resentful about Bugei and that made a difference from doing what she could than holding her head low following orders with meager grades. Not only was there Nobu but Yumiko, Mirai, Roshi, Mizuha-sensei and others. She would never have been able to cross paths with either of those people if she stayed at home in Kaga. Even Yumiko due to slight social class differences. To sum it all simply, "The most good I could say about Bugei is how I wouldn't have been able to meet any of the people that made this place enjoyable. That would be my favorite thing...next to the healthy stock of coffee milk machines we have on campus.

"The most good I could say about Bugei is how I wouldn't have been able to meet any of the people that made this place enjoyable. That would be my favorite thing...next to the healthy stock of coffee milk machines we have on campus." Suishoku's answer to the headmaster's question was nice. She counted herself among those people. At least she hop she was part of that list. Though now she had to give her own answer.

She want to say it was Masumi of course, but that wasn't so much the Bugei as it was him. She needed to give a far better answer. Thus, looking at the Headmaster, Suishoku, and shinsuke she thought about how nice it was that the two of them could even gather like this. Outside of Edo Bugei they would never be able to meet like this due to their different social classes. Yumiko likely would have never become friends with Suishoku or Nobuyori. Nor Masumi who was from the south, nor Kai.
"I like the equality." she said simply.
"Lords, common people, people from large cities, people from smaller areas, everyone is treat equally at Edo Bugei and it is a nice feeling. I don't have to worry about constantly bowing to other students, and we can speak openly to one another." she gave a decided nod and smiled at the Headmaster, Suishoku, and Shinsuke.

She had nice food, which she could also get due to her father's position as a famous poet. However, she didn't have many friends back home. These kind people meant a lot to her. They made her feel comfortable.

All of the information the headmaster shared with them in the latest round of questions might be useful for Shinsuke in different ways. Not that he expected he'd have to take over his clan anytime soon, but it was helpful information. He wasn't sure if he would be able to handle the strain of running a clan and attending Bugei simultaneously though. Presuming that he had a council ruling in his place excepting emergencies, that'd certainly be easier. Yet his heart would probably be partially in Agata even while his person was in Edo. No amount of steady guidance from Aunt Suzume was going to alleviate that sort of issue. Considering the formalities of clan leadership changing he assumed that fellow members of the same family would also be allowed to return home temporarily.

Hearing about how the academy dealt with student deaths opened a bit of a sore spot for Shinsuke. While his sister Yuki hadn't been a Bugei student, her passing made the possibility of students dying all too real for him. He knew the pain and difficulty firsthand and all too thoroughly. After he graduated he assumed that students may still die while attending Bugei.. and he thought perhaps he as a diplomatic sort might be able to help facilitate condolences and visits to families. Being a Bugei alumni might help as well, and it would be a little something he could do to help others who were going through things he'd been through personally.

When it came time to share something more positive he had to give it some thought. Just what it was that he liked best about the school was initially hard to pin down. Club activities were something you could do at any school, no matter how good the teacher in charge might be here. The girls' answers provided some nudging in the direction his mind began to wander. People. Not just those he'd come to know - old friends like Nobuyori and new faces like Suishoku - but the different walks of life they came from. A representation of people from all over the country.

"I guess I'd have to say the people as well. In that we're fortunate to have a decent representation of people from all over the country. Many different social classes are represented too. Close proximity to each other allows us to learn more about other clans, and hopefully avoid the strife we knew centuries ago through understanding. That's really valuable for the sake of peace," he answered after the words had managed to settle in his mind, "Beyond that the opportunity to be close to friends both new and old. And of course being able to look after my sister, who's also a student here."

The headmaster smiled as he listened to the three express what they enjoyed about the academy. The school did have downsides, everyone knew that. If you had to be around an heir of a clan you hated, or you had to be around a social class you hated, all the time, it was very rough. At the same time, however, the academy forced that interaction instead of letting people just stay away from one another. This meant more often than not people with grudges had to either fight or train together. While it hardly solved centuries of grudges, it certainly helped to begin mending the wounds from ages past. This had always been one of the largest goals of the academy and a responsibility that the headmaster kept very near and dear to his heart.

"I'm glad all three of you have met people here at this school. I sincerely hope you can all keep growing, and learning from one another. Just remember, it is easy to be close to someone when you are forced to. The trick is maintaining those strong connections after you leave this place, and are living in different provinces, not forced to interact every day. Though I wish you luck, and I strongly believe you can pull this off." he said with a large smile. He felt like the father to each and every student at the academy. He had seen Suishoku grow strong, Shinsuke start to become a brave man instead of someone who stood back, and watched Yumiko both fall into depression and with the help of her fellow students over come it. It was moments of personal growth like that, that made the Headmaster thankful for his position.

reaching into his robes he pulled out three envelopes and handed them out, one to each student.
"Here are credit summaries for each of you for this class. Obviously teaching the class myself I have no letter to write and nothing to sign off on. I will say though, all three of you asked very good questions. I am honestly proud of you. It is being able to connect with students like this, that has always been my favorite thing about this academy." and with that he stood up and gave a polite bow to the students.
"I hope you three enjoy the rest of your day." he said before taking his things and returning to his office. As nice of a break from his life as this class had provided, he knew that once he returned to his office he would have a stack of paperwork waiting for him, as well as various petitions from clan lords to look over. This, for him, was his least favorite part of being Headmaster of the academy.

Leaving the library he looked around the campus, and towards the main school building. Breathing in the air as a group of students jogged past him Moriatsu couldn't help but laugh a bit. In many ways, this school felt more like his home than any mansion or castle ever would.
