Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

Wan was up early, in the wanning light of dawn, so she could avoid the rest of the people, even the other early risers. Usually, after this she'd return to bed for a few hours, since the problems of lacking sleep were many and varied and taught at great length back in her temple. But she needed space and solitude to do this. She had been alone for three years before now, and so had just gotten too used to being alone as she went through her steps. It was not like Yi Jijing was a secret of her temple either, it was a well-known Shoalin thing, and her temple used mostly repurposed Shoalin stuff as their base. It was simply that she enjoyed the silence and solitude.

Also maybe it was also because she was kind of embarrassed to wear her Miko uniform in this school. She had gotten it refurbished when she went home, and it was a pristine silken garment now, but somehow she just felt strange wearing it in the school when she had another uniform to wear that was relevant to the school. She could have worn that one, but she wanted to ensure that she was always ready to move in this relatively restrictive uniform. Plus she also had some lead strings sowed into it so it was a very heavy uniform, and allowed her to train herself much better than anything normal. Maybe weights under the uniform and weights as the uniform itself was a bit of overkill, but she was a girl who was pretty overkill herself, as tall as muscular as she was.

Her Steps started slow and sombre, warming up her body to prevent anything from being damaged. Strong as she was, and as everyday as this occurrence was, overuse without first warming up could still cause injury. But after that she got faster, more direct and more forceful. Pushing her body to ensure that it remained strong, and also to ensure that it got stronger. The core of Yi Jinjing was to strength the body, and so one could not be half-hearted and expect results.

Letting out a light yawn as he idly paced through the academy grounds with no real destination in his mind, Souta was certainly up much earlier than he had originally intended. As it turned out, it was a bad idea for him to eat a bunch of chocolate before he had decided to retire for the night. Only a few hours later and the sugar had kicked him, forcing him out of his pleasant dream and making him restless. Bored after laying in bed for a while, he figured he'd take a walk outside as he often did later most days. Yet even now, he had a sucker sitting in his mouth when he likely should've laid off the candy for a bit. Since it would still be a good while still before class started, he had decided to wear some clothes he could feel comfortable with. He wore a thin, traditional white style coat with various yellow flower designs along it and a large Kasai symbol sitting over his heart. For the most part, it looked a bit strange as the sleeves came down a few inches past his fingers despite the hems of the clothing otherwise looking perfectly tailored for his form. Besides that, he wore a pair of fairly fitted black pants and had a pair of yellow sandals protecting his feet. Lastly, in his left hand would be his unlit Kiseru pipe, kept close against him.

As the sun had began to rise and begin to cast light upon Japan, the young man himself let out a light whine. He had only been up for a little bit, but never did it occur to him he should actually check what time it was before he set out to try working off his delayed sugar rush. "Man. . . It's not even close to time for class. . . Well, I guess that means I can roam around a bit longer at least." he said with a faint sigh, pondering as he continued upon his normal route straight to the training area. Often, he came by to see how others were doing and offer some sort of encouragement to keep people going. Somehow, he doubted he would get the chance on this outing.

Yet as he entered the area, he heard the soft patter of footsteps. Casting his glance around in search for the source while he began to investigate with evident curiosity, he found himself leaning his head around a corner as he figured he finally found the source. There, he saw some strange woman much taller than himself who seemed to be doing some sort of exercise. Why this early in the morning? He had no way to answer, only knowing that it was happening before him. His eyes followed her feet as he noticed her body shifting and soon enough he came out from his little hiding spot to watch openly. After a minute, he found himself sitting down on the dirt with his head tilted to the side, idly rolling around the sucker in his mouth as he still tried to figure out the point of her erratic movements. For the most part, he didn't see any reason to interrupt yet seeing as he had evidently stumbled in during the middle of something.

Wan grew faster, harder, and more vigorous, putting to shame the most energetic dancers with her movements. She was entering her own territory now, since Yi Jinjing didn't get fast enough for her to really feel like she was learning something now, in the later stages of her training. When she was seven, it felt neigh-impossible to finish a segment that she had been given, but now even five segments barely worked up a sweat without her weights. And in this age of blade and bullet - albeit not very effective or accurate bullet, but still - she needed to be much stronger than she was. More more fierce than she was. Much more dangerous than she was. And on the topic of dangerous, an intruder was about to find out how much of that she was.

Ever since her first fight, and first scar, she had developed her senses to an incredible level, to know what was around her even without her eyes. So the man who had appeared was noticed even before he came out to the open. She pretended not to notice him, to carry on with her Kata and yet, subtly move towards him with each movement, making great pains not to look at him or show any level of recognition, until she was a hair's breadth from him. And then she moved, fluidly moving from standing to crouching and thrusting a palm-strike towards the man on the floor. Clearly he was a pervert, come to watch her in her practice and then use such lewdness later in the privacy of his own room. So it was Wan's intent to taint that lewdness with pain, so he could not look back upon it with a smile, only with a feeling of fear and a desire to never spy on girls in the early morning again.

As Souta found himself watching, he still didn't quite understand what he was looking at. He could tell that it was taking a bit of concentration from her, not willing to look at him. He didn't particularly mind though as he simply continued to suckle gently upon the small orb of candy with a piece of plastic sticking out of his mouth. As far as he could tell, he would either be noticed and he could ask her or he'd eventually get bored and leave. Either way seemed to be fine for him, though apparently the woman felt differently.

As she approached at first, Souta didn't particularly think much of it. Though with each continuing movement towards himself, he couldn't help as if perhaps there was something strange going on. Tilting his head to the other direction now, he seemed curious as he began to lean back and fourth with his legs crossed. For the most part, he seemed to ponder what she might have intended for him. Then the rather strange way she held herself told him nothing good. It seemed strange she wasn't going to offer a greeting, though perhaps it wasn't as strange as his lack of one. Still, he did his best to hold still. At least until she suddenly decided to send a palm strike against him whilst he was leaning back, himself only blinking for a few moments before suddenly feeling the strike hit the center of his forehead, making him fall onto his back. After a few moments, he was suddenly gripping his head with his free hand whilst rolling around and whining, his feet kicking up into the air for a few seconds. "Ow ow ow ow ow! Hurts hurts hurts!" he suddenly exclaimed while went to quickly kick out his legs before sending them towards the rest of his body in a rapid motion.

Using the momentum to do a backwards roll, he seemed to still hold his head a bit as he watched the woman carefully. Souta didn't quite know why she decided to suddenly attack him, but he wasn't just going to let it go. Pushing himself up to his feet, he slowly released his head as he shot forward an accusatory finger at her. "Meanie!" he suddenly proclaimed loudly before going to move his other hand up to rub his forehead, whining a bit more as he felt a slight stinging still linger on his skin. "You're can't just attack people randomly! I'll tell on you!" he continued on as he puffed his cheeks out, clearly not happy.

Wan connected lightly, not wanting to crush his skull or something that would really get her into trouble. But it still made him reel back and then...start complaining like a child. Wan just stared, shocked at his childish whimpering. This, was Edo Bungei right? The gathering point of the best, the strongest warriors in the country, who were to lead the country when they grew up. Were such people really those who could use 'meanie' and 'I'll tell on you' as things to actually say. Wan felt almost embarrassed hearing them, and couldn't imagine actually saying them. But then maybe he was trying to lure her into a false sense of security and then strike when her guard was down. So she quickly took her Jiko geijutsu stance and prepared for combat. It was a unique stance, not one he would ever have any experience with. And so the advantage lied with her on that front.

"Ningen nashi, if you're solution really is to go and tell like a young child, then I shall treat you like one. But if you wish to deal with the situation like a man, then I welcome you. I won't take your depraved spying laying down, and I will protect my honour. So that leaves you with two choices. You can either turn tail and flee like a yellow-bellied child, gather someone else and have them deal with the situation yourself. Or Stand and prove that you are not just a chicken in a suit"

Clearly, Wan seemed slighted with his actions, and was not a girl to sit down and talk with perceived perverts. Or maybe she was just in the mood to throw down with people who were meant to be the best in the country. Maybe the whole thing was just a pretence to get him into a fight with her. She did seem rather mysterious and unknownable.

Grumbling still as she seemed to explain the situation, Souta only continued to rub his head a bit longer. Evidently, she felt like she was entitled to some kind of fight with him. Perhaps she held a grudge against his clan or the Date, he couldn't tell. As he looked her over for symbols, he couldn't see any that he particularly recognized. For the most part, he couldn't help but think the woman looked just a bit old as it was for Bugei. Was she some kind of upperclassmen or something? Why would someone like her suddenly try to pick a fight with someone like him.

As he watched her actions, he couldn't help but grow a bit more annoyed. "What do I have to prove to you? You call me a chicken, but you're the one that had to do a sneak attack!" he refuted rather quickly, his hand finally lowering from his head while he clutched his pipe tightly within his other sleeve. For the most part, he felt he was right. He didn't have anything to prove. He was Kasai after all and the only direction for them would be up. Yet if he just ran away now, it wouldn't look very good for him. Biting down on his sucker now, he quickly crunched the remaining bit before going to spit the stick into his hand and pocket it. He felt flustered over the whole situation, but it wasn't like he was going to lose his cool. Not that it was much of a choice.

Slowly, Souta went to move his pipe into his other hand as the relic seemed to stir to life. A faint smoke swirling within the pot of the Kiseru as he delicately turned it over to feel the weight of it. He hadn't quite thought he would be fighting another student here, much less someone who wasn't an Uesugi member at the least, but evidently some people were hungry for a lesson. Turning the pipe into his hand, he extended his arm at Wan to point the pipe threateningly at his foe. Somehow he doubted she'd understand the potential of it beyond it being a relic, but it wouldn't matter. "Fine. I'll just make you apologize then! And when I'm eating my candy, you can't have any!" he declared suddenly in his typical childish tone.

Sneak attack? ohh, this guy knew exactly how to get on her nerves. Such a spoiled, brattish idiot of a person. She was going to give him a good thumping and then get back to bed before the day began.
"Sneak attack? It was in broad daylight, right in front of you. It's your own fault you were to busy perving to notice it was coming. And then you bitched about how much it hurt, and I didn't even hit you hard. Something I won't be liable to repeat, stalky pervert man" She glared at him, her crimson red eyes rather an ominous sight, due to their rarity, but that wasn't the big problem.

No, the problem was that when he took out the smoking pipe and held it ready, without running away, Wan took that as his acceptence to engage in the fight, and took off. Her steps were light and barely audible, but broad and covered the distance that he had given himself in a few seconds. She got into ultra-intimate close quarters, and then took a step through his legs as if to move past him, and used that momentum to drive a fist into his gut. She wasn't holding anything in reserve here, using her considerable muscle and stepping momentum to drive through him and hopefully do some damage before he could come up with a plan to get out of the way. His pipe was a strange thing, but if she could keep him off his feet and make him more worried about keeping himself in one piece than he was about using his relic, then she'd have the advantage.

Sure Scions had great powers that allowed them to lord it over everyone, but Wan wasn't about to disgrace the Martial Art world by giving up. She was going to ram her power down his throat and show him that normal people could be powerful as well!

"All of a sudden without any reason other than I was looking at you. Yes, a sneak attack." Souta quickly shot back, knowing he was right. If she wanted to attack him fairly, she would had charged at him. But she deliberately kept her movements sly as she approached him and he wasn't some fool. Still, she seemed too thickheaded to be reasoned with. If she really wanted to argue, he wasn't going to be apart of it. His actions would speak louder than his words and he had no intention of letting some random assaulter mock him after jumping him.

As she began to approach, he moved reactively backwards in response. He himself wasn't particularly strong, but speed was an ally to him. Still, he moved just a bit slow enough for her to get in close. It wouldn't do if he just tried to run from her the whole time since he'd likely only tire himself out. Quickly moving sideways as she made to step towards him, he looked hard at her arm before going to only throw himself backwards with a quick leap. She didn't think he would just stand there and take it, did she? His cheerful demeanor seemed all but gone as instead he felt the tactician within take over, thinking carefully on his move. The smoke from his pipe quickly took to the air, growing thick in the air above himself as he only moved back some more before suddenly reforging itself into solid blade that hovered above him.

"This'll hurt." he simply explained quickly before snapping his fingers as the blade flew towards his opponent rapidly, clearing intent on having it stab into her. It wasn't like he was aiming for anywhere vital, opting to target her thigh with the blade as he figured it would skewer her leg and they would be done with her going to the medical room. Still, he didn't dare to lower his guard even as he attacked whilst pacing backwards to try keeping up a healthy distance from her.

For all his whining and brattish behaviour, he was pretty fast. Sure, the lead weights were slowing her down so she wasn't nearly as quick as she could have been, but even still, he was agile and manoeuvrable to get out of the way of her in time. Maybe the fight would be a good fight after all. She smirked at that, and persued him as he went. But then he changed the whole tone of the fight by using his smoke powers to spawn a blade and try to stab her. Sure, he didn't seem like the fighter type and his relic could have split his focus between it's powers and his own, but still. A bloody sword? Fortunately he didn't aim it anywhere too bad, only going for her thigh. Still, the thigh had major arteries running through it, and if they were severed, a person could find themselves bleeding to death pretty quickly.

So she put her forward progression on hold and raised her leg, catching the blade on the metal encasing her shin. Generally just used for training, protecting herself with it was an unorthodox way of going about things, but then she was an unorthodox way of going about things. He was backing up from her, keeping a distance between her and him, which was a good thing for him, but also a bad thing for him. Being inside a training hall, there was only so far you could back up before you hit a wall, and that was exactly what Wan was going for. Chase him backwards until he hit a wall, and then be on him. So after the blade was caught in her shin-weight, she rushed towards him, forcing him backwards until the wall made it's appearance, at which point she would strike out at his pipe-holding arm, hoping to make a blow land at the shoulder and cause pain-spasms to make him drop it.

She was well aware that he was a slippery one now, however. So she covered all her bases. A subtle slip of her back foot over to cover the none-pipe arm in case he tried to move that way, she could lash out with a kick to his side, and a slightly raised front foot so that if he tried to duck, she could snap a kick into his chin as he went down. Smoke powers could throw a wrench into the mix, but what was life without some risk?

As the woman caught his sword, it simply dispersed back into the same smoke that had caused it to form. Souta himself seemed mildly annoyed as he watched, figuring he would need to be clever about his moves if he really was going to get the jump on her. Thankfully, he was a strategist or at least studying to be one. His whole course was about using his wit to control the ebb and flow of battle. He didn't plan to let this woman's sheer strength overcome his planning by any means.

As he felt himself moving back, he knew as well that there would only be so far he could go before he would have to shift directions. Yet he still continued to thrust himself backwards as he watched her chase. She was predictable to say the least. Her fighting would be limited by the lack of a real weapon here and the young man often favored not having to be in the face of an enemy. But if she figured that simply coming at him head on would yield result, he would humor her for now.

Feeling himself near the edge of the room, the pool of smoke in his pot once more rose up as it began to swell in the air before him, himself and his enemy assumably both running through. "Kanabō." he spoke out loud as it began to take shape into the figure of a man wielding the same weapon where the smoke previously had stood. It would take a moment for it to get oriented, but he was fine with that. He would have time. As she drove him back against the wall, he watched as the strike came aiming for his weapon arm. He didn't like what he'd have to do, but figure it would be good to help his plan. Crossing his free hand over his arm, he let his less important one take the brunt of the damage as a shock of pain ran through his body. He began to wince just a bit while he grit his teeth, but the cushion had been enough to keep his weapon arm safe while causing a bit of damage to the other instead. As he held the ground, he could feel his ash soldier drawing near before going to try swinging it's weapon at Wan's side to hopefully fracture her ribs, knowing it would be extremely hard to throw a decent punch with a compromised side.

Now she was getting somewhere. His smoke powers weren't going to get him anywhere, they were just a buzzing annoyance. It was one's fists that truly showed the person's soul! And he underestimated her soul a great deal. The power behind her fists was considerable, from the flawless throwing technique to the rippling muscles that launched it, her fist connecting against his arm would easily shatter bone. Satsujinken would get nowhere if she could not bring a man down with her fists. And as regretful as it might have been, to the monks of her home, she had many under her belt. And a flaw of getting far too wrapped up in a fight once she had felt the crack, and shatter of bone against her fist. She wasn't planning to kill this guy, not by a long shot, but still, the power in her arms, and indeed her whole body, was not something to be scoffed at.

This, against a man with the magic power to spawn ash soldiers, was an error that she was not going to repeat. With a broad, slightly creepy smile she brought her other fist up, to strike the weapon arm again, and feel more of the crush, more of the crumble, more of the smash when her fist made contact and her muscles turned bone into bits. But, that was not to be, as the ash warrior made a strong contact with her unprotected side, and with it's own bone-shattering force, made quite the mess. More of a mess than the person in front of her was expecting, that was for sure.

And so, in the aftermath of the strike, Wan just stood there, staring at him, fist raised and eyes wide, as if she was trying, and failing, to do something that was unseen and unknown. But what was known, was the fact that she was not moving to punch him, nor moving to do much, it seemed.

There was a good bit of things that the young Kasai heir had been expecting. Souta had expected that the woman would rush him and mindlessly attack. He was willing to sacrifice an arm for a bit to make sure that it wouldn't disarm him. It now hung limply at his side, the pain from it biting at him. But it wasn't like he could do much without his weapon or power. He had expected that she would become so tunnel visioned that she wouldn't even notice the soldier that he had been spawning while she rushed him. It was his plan to have it subdue her in one fell swoop so that this ridiculous fight would be over. One thing he hadn't expected however was the power of the strike. He believed he had a good amount of foresight. He felt confident the blow would land. But even with the guidance his relic gave him, allowing him to think as his bone was smashed, he couldn't stop the strike as he realized she had no intention of putting her guard back up.

A single loud thud was all it took to stop the woman before she could start a merciless assault on him. Souta was left staring with a mix of pain and surprise at the fist that hovered before him, clearly intent on damaging him further. Staring at the blood he had drawn, Souta shook in for a few moments. He was rough, that was for sure, but he hadn't expected this kind of impact. He simply needed to stop her. Had he gone overboard? He was uncertain even now as he couldn't shake the predator's expression the woman had for him only a moment ago. He was certain if he didn't stop her, it would've only been much worse for him. Besides this, he still had no idea why this dangerous woman had tried to fight him so badly. Even if she had a rivalry with his clan, to attack him all of a sudden and challenge him whilst spitting on his honor. It made no sense to him.

Yet he couldn't just stay in place like this forever. He took a moment before somewhat regaining his composure. Staring at the ashen soldier for a moment before instead of attacking once more, it would try to grab the woman by her arms and pull her down to the ground instead. "Go down. I don't want to fight anymore." he stated simply with a grumble. He hoped she wouldn't fight it if only to keep her from straining her body any further now. Simply turning to walk a bit from her, he let his ashen soldier collapse into a pile of ash as he set his relic down. Carefully, he moved his hand through his leggings to grab his phone. The school's number specifically. Even now, he figured there had to be some kind of staff on hand for this sort of thing. "I need a. . ." he grunted and winced once more as the pain in his arm only surged along with his beating heart, making it difficult to focus without his relic. Besides that, nausea was now beginning to come over him as he felt his adrenaline slowly starting to come down, convinced the fight would be over. "A medical group. The training area, please." he would start, talking for a minute before a group would be sent out to likely arrive soon.

Wan gave a frightening lack of resistance, or even reaction as she was taken to the ground by the ashen soldier. And then, as she led on the ground, and the boy called for the medical men, the white top she was wearing, slowly started to turn red around the impact zone. Saturating with blood, it seemed she had rather the nasty wound in her side. Her weights, while metallic enough to stop blades, was fragile and brittle when it came to blunt force, and shattered under the impact of the ashen soldier, penetrating her side and causing the blood to start to leak out. But, unbeknownst to anyone until they opened her top and checked, by the time they saw the bleeding, she was already to far gone to save.

The penetration of the lead shrapnel had sunk it's way into Wan's lung, and shattered pieces of her rib added into the dog-pile, cutting over a dozen small holes in her lung, and causing intense internal bleeding, as well as filling her lung with blood. The end result was Wan choking on her own blood. Her attempts to use internal techniques to circulate breath, and to strengthen her organs, availed nothing. Though it seemed peaceful on the outside, on the inside there was a war raging, until the final moment, and then all was quiet. Wan coughed bloody flem once, and then was still. And silent as the grave. A phrase that was all too accurate for Wan. While she might have been the one who stood above most in the realm of pure physical combat, she was far too outmatched when it came to Scions. She wanted to prove that she, and the whole Martial Arts world was not overshadowed and outclassed by Scions. And she was wrong. And that, cost her, everything.

For the most part, Souta didn't move. It wasn't like he could very much between the terrible pain he felt and the guilt he had tugging him down now. He leaned back against the wall of the training area, pressing his back against it before slowly sliding down as he winced. He reached out to grab his pipe now as he set his phone down, yet even with his relic's guidance he could not feel much more relaxed. If anything, the logic that began to run through his mind only made him feel worse as he felt his stomach tighten. The sight of the white being stained red as time passed only put a toll on him as he sat there watching, time seeming to go by slower as he couldn't take his sight off of her. His trembling heart wouldn't let him.

As the medical team arrived, he didn't say anything. Even while his arm ached for attention, he simply allowed them to rush towards the woman first. His wounds would be fine, but she needed treatment now. He continued to watch while his fingers idly tapped along his pipe. Why did his worry not subside yet? These people were professionals, probably some of the best that there was in the country, but he couldn't get his anxiousness to let up even a bit. He watched as the group frantically began to move between each other, only stirring up more worry in him. But eventually everyone slowed down and everything was revealed. She didn't have a pulse to save.

Immediately, Souta felt sick. He fought back the urge to throw up on the ground right before him as once more a tremendous wave of nausea began to wash over him. In his mind, the same line continued to repeat itself. "This was not what I planned." was all he could think of as he felt pairs of hands help him up to his feet, trying to usher him away. He still had his own wound to treat, though afterwards questioning would likely follow. Yet as he felt them trying to move him, his legs seemed weak. He had mentally prepared himself to fight and win in war. He wasn't afraid of the idea of killing as much as he told himself he would strive for alternatives. Yet this wasn't the same as suppressing rebels and defending their country. This had just been unintended bloodshed between two people at the academy. Souta winced once more. Not from pain, but as he tried to comprehend he had just killed some poor woman. He didn't know her even now. He didn't know why she seemed so eager to fight him nor why she was here in the first place. He didn't even know her name. The only thing he was sure of was that what started out small had gone awry. He glanced back at the body he left behind as a group began to seal off the area, shaking in the grasp of the men who escorted him while he hoped this was all part of some terrible nightmare. Yet part of him knew it wouldn't be that easy.
