The Ikko rebels had brought a massive, iron clad battleship to Edo. It has multiple cannons and two rotating Gatling guns on the upper deck. The ship had managed to wreck the Shogun's coastal defense forces as it approached the city. Like a massive iron battering ram it plowed into the Edo coast, going into the city and stranding itself on land as it's massive double cannon pointed directly at Edo castle, opening fire and nearly destroying the entire castle if not for Mizuha-sensei's awakened attack destroying one of the cannon balls in flight. The other one, however, found it's mark and destroyed the top of Edo Castle. Presumably with the Shogun inside of it.
At least that is what the Ikko rebels had hoped for when they aimed the ship's massive cannons at Edo Castle. Fortunately for the country, that wouldn't be the case. As the ship was known to be approaching Edo the Shogun, Tokugawa Hiroaki, was quickly rushed away from the tower of Edo Castle by two Hattori jonin. The two quickly rushed the Shogun downstairs. As the Shogun tried to hurry down the castle's turret the warship arrived and released it's massive cannon, destroying part of the tower the Shogun had just stood in. As the tower exploded, sounds of small explosions and gun going off could be heart outside. As the Shogun looked out one of the tower's small windows a group of ninja dressed in all black had descended upon the castle grounds. Caught off guard the Shogun's samurai patrolling the grounds didn't even time to draw their swords before one by one they got burned to death or cut down. In the distance the Shogun would see a ninja with an evil looking fox mask approaching the castle.
Outside Tokugawa Chiyo, the oldest of the Shogun's daughters, had been outside at the time the attack began. She was a stubborn girl who refused to just let Edo be destroyed. She had rushed outside of the castle with naginata in hand and rushed at the enemy ninja only to have her polearm get kicked out of her hands and the hilt of an enemy ninja's sword slammed into her stomach as the ninja then struck her hard in the face knocking her out. Before the shinobi could slit the throat of the young Princess, however, an order came from the fox masked Shinobi to stop and instead move inside the castle.
Back inside the sounds of battle rang everywhere as Tokugawa samurai and Hattor ninja battled the enemy ninja. The Hattori jonin even blowing themselves up if it meant taking enemy ninja with them. In a matter of minutes Edo Castle and in fact all of Edo, had become a battle ground. Tokugawa Ima, the wife of the Shogun, was running down a corridor as a Hattori jonin carried her crippled daughter Eiko towards the castle's basement.
"Keiichi, save me. Please. Keiichi." Eiko cried, however the Hattori leader wouldn't be coming. He had been badly injured in a battle in Western Japan. Instead it was up to her mother, the jonin carrying her, and two Tokugawa guards to lead them to safety. As the wall next to them exploded Eiko and her mother Ima fell to the ground, the Hattori jonin guarding them with his body as three Ikko ninja rushed into the castle corridor. The two guards demanding the continue moving towards the basement as they began locking swords with the enemy. The Jonin, wrapped in all black similar to the Ikko ninja, picked the crying Eiko back up and started running down the hall, Eiko's mother behind him as up ahead the saw the Shogun, a series of cuts on his body and a drawn katana in hand, his two Hattori guards nowhere to be seen.
"Ima thank the Buddha." he said as he gazed at Eiko, his eyes going wide.
"CHIYO! WHERE IS CHIYO!" the Shogun demanded, but the Hattori ninja carrying Eiko simply shook his head quickly.
"My lord. We have no time." a quiet voice said behind the Shogun. It was one of the monks that dweled under Edo Castle, inside of the ancient vault made to house the country's relics for study and safe keeping.
"SO YOU WILL HAVE ME GO WITHOUT MY FAMILY!?" the Shogun screamed, waving his katana in the air.
"My lord. The Hattori live and die for the Shogunate. Please. We will find her." the Ninja pleaded, Eiko and his wife also looking at him desperately as the Shogun began to ground his teeth in his mouth before following the monk to a large stone circle in the floor. Tapping his staff on the stone floor three times the large, black, stone Tokugawa crest began to rotate and open, exposing a stone staircase downwards as the Shogun, his wife, and sadly only one of his daughter followed. It would be the hiding place of the Shogun until his sons returned to Edo.
Later on as Shin arrived at Edo Castle he began slaying every Tokugawa official he could find. Demanding they be set up in the Shogun's official meeting room as a display of the corpses of the Shogunate.
"I know where the vault is. You wretched bastard. I KNOW YOU ARE HIDING!" he screamed as he reached the stone circle guarding the relic vault. However, not even the powerful ex-Hitokiri could break his way through the vault's seal. Instead he would wait at the top of the castle. Wait for the Shogun's sons to arrive. Wait for the Shogun to emerge from his hiding place. Watch all of Edo burn under his command.
