Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

Thunder/heavy rain

Bugei Academy had restored much of its lost glory since the quake. A new gym/training area had been created and was now open to students who sought summer training. This included a fair bit of students still walking back and forth across the rebuilding schoolyard. Eager to learn and push their futures forward. The rain was coming down hard as kids ran back and forth between the building or the parking area. The crashing sounds of thunder boomed in the distance.

However, inside the building was dry and the pleasant sounds of rain slamming against the clear glass windows of the new training area gave off a zen like atmosphere.

In the center was a sparring area that students could use. It was currently in use. Four third years entered it dressed in combat uniforms. They were all members of the Kendo club. They were here to spar with a very well known instructor. All of them pulled practice swords from the wall and got into position waiting for their instructor to arrive.

Out of the entrance on the other side walked in Izuki Kai clad in his normal black attire tench coat still on, his hair slightly damp from the rain outside. His arrival had drawn the attention of students around the training area and they quickly moved to try to get a good view of the head Elite student. Rumors always surround those in the elite class and Kai was no exception. Girls muttered about how and if they could approach him and boys wondered if they could get him to take them as a pupil. Of course neither was an option. Kai gave off an involuntary vibe of uneasy and distance when approached. Most likely due to his attitude towards everyday life.

Kai began to speak to the four third years in front of him. "You asked me to assist in your training by sparring with you. Understand this means I won't be holding back at all. If you want to improve you must do so as if it were a real fight." He picked up a Training sword as well and motioned to the four students."Come at me. Do your best and don't hold back at all." He entered his stance crouched down a little his blade placed in an Iaido stance as the four students spread out to surround him.

Battle msuic

There was an odd moment of calm before the students rushed Kai. Their blade came at him however, Kai didn't move. He waited for the moment ... the best possible moment before moving. He drew his blade with a lighting fast motion sliding under the students guard that was standing in front of him. The blade slammed into the man's chest before Kai rolled way from the other three blades. He regained his footing and spun back to fast his opponent.

With the added momentum of the turn he aimed a strike at the opponents head. It connected and the student dropped his sword admitting defeat. Three left. They turned to face Kai and he stood up watching them as they tried to surround him. This time Kai took the offensive running at the student directly in front of him and swinging low sliding under the boys defense and connecting with his knee. The boys knee collapsed as Kai turned to face him after his dash had put him behind the boy allowing him to strike him square in the back.

Kai moved gracefully every movement planned out before hand. It was dance and he was the performer. With only two opponents left Kai took the offensive again rushing them down with relative ease. The first one he was able to disarm with a counter then trip up with a leg sweep. For the final opponent Kai blocked a strike and turned leading his opponent to slide past him. Taking the opening Kai slashed at the man's back. With that all opponents were down for the count.

All around him people stared at the Elite year who had just taken four third years down without breaking a sweat. There were some claps and cheers from the female student body. However, they died down as the handsome Elite spoke. "You all need to focus on deception. I could see through all of you. You rush in to quickly and expend far to much energy. Think on this, I can see that there is little more I can teach you today with the display you have given me. Perhaps at a later date then."

With that very blunt answer kai put his practice sword away and retreived his real weapon preparing to leave.

Nori sat soaked to the bone in her combat uniform. She didn't mind being damp. There was a saying in Bushido. There were those that ran from cover to cover, trying to avoid the rain, and there were those that sprinted through it as if to dodge raindrops. The samurai continues on his own path at his pace regardless, knowing he will be soaked either way. This teaching can be applied to all things. The truth was that it was warm out, and the rain had been a bit of a relief that took the edge off the heat. She was content with that, even if it did mean her exceptionally long ponytail would flop about a bit more when the time came for a duel.

Kai Izuki. The name was more than well known in Edo Bugei. He was quoted and idolized and treated like all that a samurai should be. It would have been dishonest to say that Nori hadn't looked up to him since she had heard of him. She had even adopted his fighting style, albeit a little differently because of the weight and balance of the katana she had and her own lanky frame. It would have been great to have witnessed an exhibition from the Head of Elite. However, such was not really to be the case. It had been less a match, and more an open insult. That isn't to say that Nori felt insulted. Samurai were supposed to be boastful. In showing their strength, they gave others a goal to strive for. It was the truly weak that took a beating and cowered in the face of it. Nori was not weak.

"Seems all the more reason ta teach. A frog in a well don't know the Great Sea, Kai-sensei."

She had meant by that saying, that one needed to learn from the strong, and know that the stronger was out there, so that they would not reach the pinnacle of what they might learn from their peers, and in doing so still be relatively insignificant. It had been a saying Nori tended to think about a great deal, being a simple farm girl that barely knew about samurai...and now she was learning to become one. The lanky, scarred student started to walk out of the gathered crowd toward the one they all clamored for. Although she was no different in seeking training from someone like Kai, let it not be said she was timid.

Hands still bandaged from getting clawed and bitten by a vicious parrot, removed her katana from it's place, and a training boken was lifted and set in it's place. Calm eyes held a slight determination behind them as they watched the man she was fairly certain would crush her in a spar. Then again, Hagakure said to meditate on death every morning, so as to prepare to be surrounded by it daily. It was because of this that she had little fear of the beating she would take. It would happen all the same. Still, she would stand her ground in the face of a greater enemy.

"I'm trustin' that, like ya said, ya don't plan ta hold back."

Slowly, she took a stance similar to Kai's own Iajustsu form. Her bandaged hand held a relaxed, loose grip on the handle. Her breathing became slow and steady. This also calmed her heart rate. It didn't take much to kill someone in real combat. That seemed to be the hardest lesson for new swordsmen. It wasn't like chopping wood. There were many, many wounds that could end a life, and many of those didn't require the force and energy expended by some of the other students. Then again, they were fighting one skilled adversary. The trick to an economy of motion was that any action taken in combat needed to add an advantage, or remove a disadvantage. Anything else was a waste of energy. In the field, on missions, there was always the outside chance someone like Kai wouldn't be alone. If she burned herself out against the one enemy she knew was in front of her, then she would die at than hands of however many lay in wait for her to grow weary.

Kai was putting his things away quietly his mind wandering off to a hot bath and sake in his room in the apartments waiting for him. He had yet to retrieve his sword or depart. A female third year approached him. She spoke to him in a heavy accent. He sighed softy, no doubt another wanna be pupil coming to beg for his acceptance. He turned to face her. He raised his eyebrows. She had adopted his stance. It was crude, basic and a bit off center. Was she trying to learn his style from visuals alone. He had to admit that was a bit more dedication that he was used too. He picked up his practice sword again and paced around her slowly. "Name.." He says quietly watching her.

"Spread your legs a little bit further as well. Your stance is off by a bit. It will affect your footwork and reaction time." He entered his own stance. his sword at his side and his right hand hovering over it. "You show promise, much more than the rest of the group from earlier. "

Something about this girl impressed him. It was odd, he didn't get this type of feeling often and when he did those students usually ended up as elite students. He rushed her suddenly without warning. Even if he felt a connection he didn't want to take any students, most came to him with the heroic delusion that Kai was some savior that could teach them to protect the world. They were wrong. Kai was a tool used to kill things. His practise sword slashed left aimed aimed at her waist.

He needed to test her reaction time and skill. If she was willing then maybe he would teach her. However she would need to give the right answer to his question. Kai stepped back keeping his sword in front of him now in case of a counter attack. "Never put your weapon away until the opponent is dead, once drawn it stays drawn." He spoke sternly. This was against the Iaido main style but if she was going to use his custom style she better get it right.

Depending on how she would adapt to his commands and her fighting style there was one final question he would ask her and to Kai it was the most important. Most Bugei kids came to the school with the goal of being heroes like Sanada Yukimura or Masamune Date, but they were wrong. His question would be about her sword. What was a sword to this girl? A weapon to shield the weak? Or a tool to banish the evil of the world.

"Nori Iwara."

She spoke short. That wasn't going to be much need for words if he was telling her the stance to make. Clearly, he was going to honor the girl with a spar, from the look of it. Seeing what little she had of Kai, he was faster than she was. There was no doubt about that. She knew she couldn't match him for speed, which would mean she would have to react in a way that not only would keep her 'alive' were they using real swords, but she would also need to attack in a way Kai wouldn't anticipate until it was too late. Even then, it was a long shot. He was damned good.

She did as instructed, adjusting her footing, though not taking her eyes off the sensei. Injured hands and an injured back, she didn't have room for error. Talking was another mistake that some of the other students tended to make. They tried to brag and boast and take a care free approach to the sword. When Nori took up a blade, she had to make sure the world outside of the fight fell away. There was nothing beyond her enemies. There was no yesterday, no tomorrow, no friends, and no allies. To survive in a duel, especially against someone with Iado training, all focus had to be kept on the must subtle of details.

When Kai came at Nori, she drew a bit earlier than she would against one of the other students. Her grip on her blade as was relaxed until she had to 'snap' the grip to properly block. Relaxed and tight were the ebb and flow of proper sword technique. Too tight all the time, and your attacks became too rigid. Too relaxed, and there would be a lack of effective parry or follow-through. She had learned her second year that the movement of the sword hand to begin like the flow of water, and mid-way had to crack like a whip with a hard follow-through that was aimed a foot or so behind your target.

Nori parried the opening salvo, no doubt as Kai expected she would. As the strike was parried, Nori continued the follow-through of the block with the intent to swing a circular arch and bring the end of the practice sword across Kai's ankle. Not every attack had to be a kill. Ideally, it was. But if you could take a hand or a foot with less risk, then the longer the fight ended up, the easier it would be to win. Even with a wooden practice sword, a knock to the ankle bone could sting.

As for her sword, she knew what it meant to her. There was a reason she only used the one she made. There was a reason she trained with no other weapons. She was not an archer or a pikeman. She was not a diplomat nor an adviser. There was an odd silence to the students. No cheering. No calls for a victory from either. This was one of those odd moments in class where those in attendance were too surprised by what they were witnessing, and a bit too caught in the moment, to give more then slack-jawed awe that a Third Year student would even dare to call what might have been taken as a challenge to Kai Izuki, let alone someone without any noble blood to their name.
