Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 06/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. Making friends and learning about Edo Culture is their current aim! In other news it is also time for the school dance event! Please bring your characters along!

Hi. I know it's been /way/ too long, but I'm back, after a bit of a family emergency. I've kind of been debating bringing it up, but it'd be kind of lame to disappear and not say why. Basically, two of my younger cousins got onto a highway accident. They made it out, but their injuries are... not nice. Our family's been badly shaken by the whole thing, and lately it's been a bit hard to get the energy to write or commit to much of anything.

But I think I really need to just get back into things. So, sorry to anyone I left hanging. Also, thank you in the chat for the friendly welcome back!

Zhiwei's stay at Edo Bugei had been less linear than he thought it would be. Most of his time had been consumed by getting used classes, teachers, and the student body. Along with that, there was a hefty dose of accumulating to the dorms: more than a month in, and he was still spending mornings with headaches from falling off the Western bed.

Today, he remedied the lack of forward motion by making his way to the track field. Rain had been frequent in Edo lately, but today it had finally decided to let up. The track was dry, and, more importantly, empty- the club wasn't scheduled to meet for another hour, meaning Zhiwei had the field all to himself. As much as he liked to train, one particular upperclassman of his was a near monster. The image of himself, red in the face doing high kicks while the upperclassman’s commands ripped through the open grounds urged him here early.

Resisting the urge to shudder at the thought, Zhiwei positioned himself at the start of the track. The warm up was, hands down, the worst part of running to him. Every time he was forced to make the same, droning clip around the track, his mind would start to wander, or he’d speed up too quickly, without noticing. Sometimes, purposefully. The yelling was more trouble than it was worth.

But by the start of his second lap, the lack of any authority, coupled with the lack of any need to stick to the group regimen, took its toll on the boy's self-restrained. There were no upperclassmen, no rules. Why not ramp up the run, a bit? Besides, it was Saturday. Friday's cleanup team was notoriously lazy, and the storage shed would probably be unlocked. Approaching the storage shed, he found that the students had gone below and beyond- not only was the shed unlocked, but two hurdles stood outside it, leaned haphazardly against the wall like plastic toys.

Slowing to a bouncing trot, he went over to the hurdles, and, still huffing, hefted one up under his arm. After a thought, he hefted the other one under his arm, too. With some difficulty, he jogged back onto the course.
He set the first down, then the other about thirty feet behind, right as the track began to curve. Crossing his arms, Zhiwei stepped back to look at the track. It looked bare, unchallenging. In any real competition, there’d be five times this- never mind he wasn’t trained for real competition.

With that that in mind, Zhiwei went at a full jog back to the store room. He emerged with three more hurdles, placed, perfectly, onto the course. Well, that was the plan. It was hard to balance three aluminum hurdles on one fourteen year old body, so the actual result was a mess of gym supplies midway through the track, with one panting boy bent over them.

If it doesn’t have some loose stitches, discolourations or is a size too big or small, then he probably doesn’t own it. Zhiwei doesn’t have much of a stomach for traditional or formal clothes, and besides the one formal yukata he owns won’t be found in them. When he does have a choice, his clothes are usually comfortable and bright.
The Edo Bugei uniform is special to him, as the first piece of clothing that was bought and made for just him. He not-so-secretly loves it, and wears it at every opportunity.

Zhiwei, while being kind and generally wanting the best for everyone, is a bit of a brat. He’s prone to getting into trouble, being where he shouldn't be, and generally nudging the limits of what can be done. Mostly, it's to get attention. At fourteen, he’s not too emotionally mature, or restrained. Still, having grown up in the poverty he’s smart enough to know how not to cross too many lines, and how to comply enough to get by. Most of the time.
More prominently, he’s a vigilante. Or, a self-proclaimed vigilante, at least. Zhiwei idolises heroes, wants to protect others around him, and doesn’t trust the authorities to always do that. So he’s willing to take it into his own hands. But he can be naive at the worst of times, and follow bad influences in the hopes of accomplishing that.
In short, he’s a naive, rambunctious and idealistic kid with a hero complex.
FEARS: Failing in protecting people. Alternately, seeing himself or his loved ones victimised or helpless.

WEAPON: With little skill in close combat or physical strength, Zhiwei relies on long-range weapons when he can: his main being a blowgun with darts (usually dipped in a non-lethal poison). When it does come to hand-to-hand combat, he's learning to use a plain knife.
RELIC: Goemon's Kakute
OWNER HISTORY: A semi-legendary outlaw hero who stole gold and other valuables to give to the poor. He and his son were boiled alive in public after their failed assassination attempt on the civil war-era warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
ACTIVATED ABILITY 1: Zhiwei changes form. The target must be a human he has seen, and can’t be more than 5 inches taller or shorter than him, and around his general mass. Physical abilities are not affected: he’s only as strong and fast as he would be normally.
ACTIVATED ABILITY 2: Zhiwei changes form. The target must be a human he has seen, and can be more than up to a foot taller or shorter than him, with some variation in body mass. He can adopt the physical strength and speed of the target.
LOCKED ACTIVATED ABILITY 3: Zhiwei changes form. The target can be any human, fictional or non-fictional, that he has seen or imagined (?). He cannot surpass physical human limitations, but he can get pretty dang far.
PASSIVE 1: Zhiwei can mimic the voice and mannerisms of his target form, whether or not he's taken up their appearance.
LOCKED PASSIVE 2: Zhiwei can make slight alterations to his form's cosmetic traits, such as changing their hair or eye colour.
LOCKED Awakened Mode Color: None
AWAKENED ATTACK: Zhiwei transforms into a person, real or fictional. In this state, he can replicate their abilities and fighting style, once they're within plausible human limitations (for example, having the swiftness and reflexes of common depictions of Ishikawa Goemon).
This takes a lot of energy, and so can only be maintained for a short amount of time- assuming Zhiwei's at peak power, about 15 minutes.

Zhiwei was born to an impoverished Chinese immigrant who left her home country in the hopes of a better life in Edo. After moving to Japan, she had a hasty marriage with a Japanese craftsman of Chinese heritage. The couple made money selling cheap goods they brought over from the trip, and, when those ran out, made candles. They weren’t very successful. Zhiwei grew up in what were pretty much the slums of Shimotsuke, in a cramped, two bedroom apartment he shared with his parents and another three-person family, consisting of two boys a couple years older than Zhiwei, and their grandmother, who Zhiwei called năinai and treated as his own grandmother- she would read him stories and cook. Still, life wasn’t exactly glamorous.
So Zhiwei found ways to have fun. Most of them involved getting in trouble, whether he meant to or not. The family had the misfortune of living close enough to the upper class district that they were considered a nuisance: their community was closely watched monitored by the police, in case he posed a nuisance to the upper class who lived nearby. Unfortunately, to the overambitious officers, ‘trouble’ often included littering, playing games, and being too loud and visible. After a while, he started embracing it: if he was going to get in trouble anyway, why not make a bang? In truth, it was the only way to get any attention in his busy, six-person household. So, his childhood consisted of a lot of troublemaking, narrowly escaping punishments, and too many hero stories from his năinai.
One day, a Scion hiding from the authorities came to their door. Zhiwei was alone with his grandmother. They hadn’t known who he was, at first- the man had disguised himself as an officer; but when they let him in, his skin seemed to peel off to reveal a large, looming, and very panicked man. The Scion threatened to kill them both if they called the authorities, and proceeded to pace the room, panicked, for hours. And hours… Time seemed to stand on edge for the two in the house. Then suddenly, when it was getting dark, the man got up, cursed, and stormed into Zhiwei’s room. When his parents returned, the four of them worked up the courage to enter the room. It was empty, the Scion had left, and on the wrinkled sheets was a single his relic: a fukiya.
Despite his parents’ pleas to leave it alone, and leave it to the authorities, Zhiwei was drawn to the thing. He rushed into the room and slipped it over his finger. When the authorities did arrive, they arrived to find a newly-minted Scion: a 13 year old, 5’4” boy with black hair and tanned skin. Shamelessly, Zhiwei announced his intention to use his new ‘power’ to deal with the evil Scions in the world: if the police couldn’t do it, who would?

So, my A-level exams are starting on Monday. So far, I've been managing to juggle posts and studying well enough, but since they're officially starting, from now until they end (my last exam is on June 6th) I'm not going to be able to post all that often.

I'll try to keep up in the Idol thread because I don't want to hold anyone back, but my posts will probably be a lot shorter than usual. Anybody I'm threading with, feel free to skip me if I go a couple days without a response. I don't plan to disappear completely, because I look forward to logging on and hanging out here! But I have no idea how much free time I'll have over the next month or so, so apologies for any long periods of radio silence.
