Yamana Eriko of the Yamana
HAIR: Nearly mid-back length black hair that hangs straight and has bangs which fall just over her eyebrows.
WEIGHT: 112 lbs
BODY TYPE: Slender and slightly wiry.
STYLE: Anything official or school related will find Eriko in her regular school uniform, though she dreams of the day she's allowed to wear the Elite uniform. When not engaged in such activities her style tends to be somewhere between antiquated and business casual. Typical of this style is a blouse combined with a modest skirt, often with a sweater or light jacket to complete the look. Headbands are a constant in her wardrobe as well and she has just about enough to accessorize any color scheme imaginable. Anything with her family mon is given priority if possible - she feels its simplicity makes it pure yet complex.
OTHER: Typically Eriko's posture is geared toward making herself smaller so as not to attract attention - reflecting her outward personality. When engaged in something serious, though, she stiffens her posture and has a fire in her eyes which is normally not present.
Generally Eriko is an outwardly friendly, if somewhat awkward girl who does her best to fit in and stay on everyone's good side. It's rare to find her in any mood other than a cheerful one, and if someone else is down she sees it as her job to cheer them up. Inwardly this friendly nature serves both the purpose of making friends and creating ties which could be exploited later to improve her station. She does genuinely enjoy the congenial company of others but she views her duties to her clan above most others. Eriko fosters great ambition to improve her clan's standing far past its current meagerness. She's actually very focused despite how unassuming she appears to most people. A task is to be completed no matter what - she can get so focused on what she's working toward or on that she shuts out the world around her. Eriko is adaptable enough to change the route of her plotting but not as much for the desired outcome. That's one area where she's steadfastly stubborn.
Despite her ambitiousness, Eriko is actually supportive of others and will not simply use those close to her as stepping stones. A few eggs have to be broken to make an omelette, but she will not sacrifice those she has grown close to. Proud as she is Eriko has insecurities about her position as not only a member of a minor clan but also a normal student. This drives her more to exceed expectations but also makes her very defensive about herself and fellow normal students. It can be hard for her to accept the help of scions on a mission if she feels that the task is something she can do herself.
STRENGTHS: Driven, very capable at quick striking in bugei skills, adaptable, focused.
WEAKNESSES: Ambitious, somewhat manipulative, can be stubborn toward goals, insecure about current status.
LIKES: The Yamana clan, simple fashions, friends, training, Japanese history and classics, flowery (but usually poorly written) novels.
DISLIKES: Being looked down upon, obstacles to her goals, bitter tastes, her plans harming her friends, failing her clan.
AMBITIONS: Eriko's main goal in life is to ultimately improve the lot of the Yamana clan beyond its current standing. Increasing its prestige and power to something more resembling its standing prior to the Gempei War is her ultimate ideal, but any improvements are worth the effort. More immediately she's focused on gaining acceptance into the Elite class, despite not being from a prominent clan or a scion.
FEARS: The thought that she might simply remain a skilled but inconsequential bushi from an inconsequential clan.
WEAPON: Eriko has trained with a number of different styles of combat, preferring weapons that allow her to use speed and accuracy over brute strength. Her main weapon is an old katana which has seen better days and bears the Yamana mon on its hilt. She also is capable with a yumi, though she prefers getting close and personal given the option.

BACKGROUND: Eriko had the fortune to be born into the Yamana clan centuries too late for that to count for very much. Once the clan had been one of the most powerful and influential in Japan, but their prestige faded quickly after expending a great deal during the Gempei War. As the eldest daughter of the Yamana rulers of Inaba, Eriko was regaled with tales of those days as a child. What she didn't understand was how their family could have fallen so far, why they weren't still considered integral in society. Though her parents taught her to be happy with what she had, Eriko became convinced there had to be a way to rectify her situation.
To do so she dedicated herself to becoming the best samurai she could be - special attention was paid to bugei skills. Even if she didn't have the prestige of a major clan's daughter she could still prove her worth as a warrior. As she did so she also studied history closely to try and learn as much as she could about what things had been like when her clan had been influential. In the process she began to delineate her outward personality from her ambitious side, knowing she'd need allies (or even just convenient people to know) to get where she wanted to go. Eventually her training paid off to get the attention of more influential people, and she was granted admission to Edo Bugei.
Since arriving as a student Eriko has doubled down on her cute outward self as a way to gain the trust of her peers. Best to make many allies rather then alienate those who might serve useful in her plans. All the while she's also put in a great deal of effort to hone her bugei skills, determined to make a name for herself. In the process she's gotten a little bit of a reputation as the cute swordswoman from the countryside. While not an ideal reputation in her own eyes, Eriko has tried to make the most of it anyhow.
As she was enrolled in the bushi path Eriko in particular has appreciated the guidance of Yagyu-sensei, especially where it came to swordsmanship. In order to surpass expectations she assumed existed about a girl of her family who was not a scion Eriko made a habit of staying after most students had retired to dorms in order to sharpen her skills further. Though she has advanced through efforts on missions and ceaseless dedication, she aspires to break into the upper echelon of Edo Bugei as well. Without being a scion she pursued Elite status with intense focus and drive, in order to achieve status which no one could deny to the Yamana heiress.
Finally as a third year things changed - she was selected by Izuki Kai to be one of three students to undergo testing as Elite candidates. They managed to utilize their respective skills in concert with one another and pass the exam, much to Eriko's delight. Since then she's struggled between her role as an Elite and Yamana heiress and that of the significant other of the Shogun's son. She's afraid of what might happen to her family should she marry the boy she's been with for a year; maybe it would grant her inheritance of Yamana lands to the Shogunate. Of course as long as her sisters are old enough when a transfer of power happens, that shouldn't be a problem..
