It was a cold day in Edo's outskirts. Fortunately no snow was on the ground. Clouds had covered the sky all day and as the hour was approaching sunset it was only set to get colder. Standing near a large farm, looking at calm and menacing as always was the elite sniper Kiryu, Rai. To many it may have seemed odd to have a quiet sniper take over the tracking class for the day instead of a shinobi student, however in Rai's mind she was clearly the best choice. She came from a low ranking family and worked her way up through Edo Bugei, training directly under the now deceased Saika-sensei. With a brown cloak over her head, a shinobi mask over her mouth, and an elongated musket leaning on the fence next to her she waited for her students to arrive.

It would have seemed odd when they did. The entire area seemed empty even though it was clearly a well lived on farm. Not even birds could be heard or seen. Something about Rai made her seem like a scarecrow from hell. Holding the clipboard with four names in front of her she expected the students to sign in when they arrived.

In the distance, if one was looking up, they would see a figure trudging through the field towards the farm and the person standing there with a clipboard. Kurome had a cloak wrapped around her, as it was a tad chilly this morning. Under the coat she wore a leather jacket with a furry neck, complete with black skinny jeans and black boots that were fashionable, but perfect for rainy or cold weather. As usual, she had her relic mask on the side of her purple hair. On her arm she had brandished her elite patch, as she was proud of it.

This was her third year in school but this was her first tracking class. She wondered if the other students would be in her year, or earlier. Probably earlier, since it was the beginner class. As she approached the person, she thought it was a tad eerie that there were no birds singing. The girl looked up to the overcast sky as she walked, wondering if the birds were not singing because it might rain soon.

Kurome approached Rai, unsure of who it was until she was closer. The girl looked like a scarecrow in the distance. The only signal that she was a real person was the clipboard she was holding while she waited for the students to arrive. Kurome, of course, was first.

She bowed to the teacher once she arrived and pulled her hood off of her head, careful not to mess up her mask. "Kurome Huzaki, Third year elite, reporting for class." She announced, studying the face of the teacher. This was the Elite sniper she had heard about. She couldn't remember her name, but she was familiar with her face. The girl was kind of famous in the school. Kurome was a tad jealous. She wished she was good at guns and sniping, however her speciality was, and always would be, martial arts.

Mirai was glad she’d rugged up. It might not have been snowing today, but it was still pretty cold outside and it wouldn’t be long before twilight approached and made it yet colder still. She wondered how long the class would take; she didn’t exactly fancy wandering through Edo in the dark to get back to the school dorms.

She shivered as she crossed the field to reach two cloaked figures. It was eerily still out here. Not so much as the sound of a bird call, only the crunch of her own footsteps as she walked. As she got closer, the two figures grew more distinct and she could make out that one of them was holding a clipboard; she must be the teacher.

Once she was near enough to talk properly, Mirai bowed to the clipboard-bearer. “Okada Mirai, present.” She nodded at the other figure, a girl wearing some kind of mask, to acknowledge her.

She shoved her hands into her coat pockets. She was a slight bit nervous; she wasn’t sure exactly what tracking would entail or if she’d be any good at it. She’d never tried it before, after all. But it seemed like it could be a skill that might come in handy at some point, and besides, it might be fun to try something new, so she’d signed herself up for it. And who knew, maybe it would turn to be really interesting and she could get some good experience out of it, so part of her did look forward to it too.

The rocks benath Maximus' feet crumbled and skattered as he huffed down the dirt road. The cold air burning in his chest as he had run from his dorm straight to the location of class. "I'm.. late. Second day.. and i.m soo... late" Maximus grumbled to himself between quickened breaths. The cold air was pins and needles against his cheeks. Maximus wore baggy beige sweatpants and a loose fitting tshirt on top. 'It was so much hotter in Egypt.' He thought to himself, recollecting where he had been a short 24 hours ago. As he approached what looked to be like and abandoned farm, he could see three figures in the distance. He had really cleared the distance, he was elated. His sprint died down to a jog as he finally joined the group. "Sorry.. I'm. Late." He panted with his hands on his knees, He looked up at the 3 girls looking like the odd man out already. "I'm.. Maximus." He held out to fingers. "Second year." He straightened up and ran his fingers through his blonde hair. Regaining his composure, he let out a half grin. "Um i think i need to invest in an alarm clock." He commented. What a a great start to his year was all he could think to himself.

Ash took a deep breath and sighed happily as he walked. The farmlands, something he was more accustomed to. No crazy technology here, just the nice, calm countryside of the Edo outskirts. Ash hadn't had a breath of fresh air in a while, the city air choking him with the numbers of people looking at their mobile communication squares and traveling with their metal transportation snakes. The countryside of the outskirts brought him back to his home, making him nostalgic.

A chilled wind blew, threatening to pass through him and turn his bones to ice. He pulled a cloak of deer hide tighter around himself, using a few buttons on the inside to secure it around himself better, and the warmth of his body quickly filled the cloak, blotting out the effect of the cold winter breeze. He sighed comfortably and watched the fog of his breath float off into the distance, fading away slowly until it disappeared.

It was then that he saw the others waiting. He wasn't sure what time it was (never being one to wear a watch), but assumed he was at least on time enough for them to still be here. He would approach the one holding the clipboard, assuming it to be the instructor he was told to meet, and would bow courteously. He would announce his presence in his broken Japanese, "Name Ash." He would then look at the others who were there. "Ash hopes all of you not did wait long." He looked a bit frustrated for a second. "All of you did not wait long." he corrected his word order, stressing the section he mixed up, before shooting a smile at the instructor, seeming to be proud of his speaking.

Something about the class seemed off, even before it had begun. The students all introduced themselves and gathered around the mysterious sniper as she nodded in acknowledgement of the student's arrival and double checked the clip board. Putting it away she then pulled a piece of paper with the Shogun's seal on it. The paper looked like it had been folded multiple times as she handed it to the students. Apparently it was an order of assassination.

"Official Orders from the Shogunate,

Masatana, Oshiro. Rapist and murderer, six counts. All restrictions and trials have been lifted and the target is to be killed on sight. He is believed to be hiding in a farm outside of Edo proper. This information is three days old."

The look on her face was extremely serious, though it was hard to tell with the mask. Her eyes seemed deep like a hawk stalking a mouse. Rai motioned subtly to the farm behind them as she walked over to the barn door and slowly opened it. She didn't even take out her gun. Pointing up at the sky she said.
"Birds scatter when humans suddenly appear. First fact. I already checked the barn." she said and invited the students to look inside.

Inside the barn they would find a desk with a few papers thrown to the floor, a small bucket that was full of food, a few plastic sandwich wrappers, the corpse of a butchered pig, a bloody katana that looked as though it was rusting, and a few scattered clothes on the ground also covered in blood. Now it was up to what the students wanted to look for or inspect.

Kurome waited patiently in the cold while the others arrived and introduced themselves. This seemed strange.. tense. Kurome noticed it was a bit quieter than she was used to. And the teacher explained why as she spoke her first words to them

"Official Orders from the Shogunate,

Masatana, Oshiro. Rapist and murderer, six counts. All restrictions and trials have been lifted and the target is to be killed on sight. He is believed to be hiding in a farm outside of Edo proper. This information is three days old."

That explained why the area was strange. That also explained the meeting place. However, Kurome raised her eyebrows upon hearing this information. She thought this class was learning how to track animals or people.
...Well technically, they /were/ tracking a person. But a murder mission? They were not police. But Kurome had killed before, that's not what bothered her. What bothered her was the misleading title of the class. She had joined this school as a Scion but learned the discipline of the military here. She knew not to complain. The teacher mentioned that she had already checked the barn. Kurome was the first to walk in. She knew it would be silly to back out now, especially since she was Elite. She had to follow orders and make a good representation of the school, so she sucked it up and went inside to investigate.

Kurome went to look at the katana and the clothes next to it. She kneeled down and wrapped her arm around her nose to cover the smell. She didn't want to breathe in anything bad. The first thing she would check is the blood on the katana. Was it fresh? Was it dry? Or was it crusty? She would also check the blood on the clothes. Did it appear to be a lot, or a little? Was the target previously wearing these clothes, or was someone else previously wearing them? Was it pig's blood, with these clothes used as rags? She checked the clothes for any sort of hole that may have been caused by the katana. She checked the way the blood was on the clothes. Was it splattered and messy? Or just soaked full of it?

Mirai glanced at the other students as they arrived. Once four students (counting herself) were there the teacher rolled out a piece of paper sealed with the Shogun’s insignia.

Mirai listened to the orders: “Official Orders from the Shogunate,

Masatana, Oshiro. Rapist and murderer, six counts. All restrictions and trials have been lifted and the target is to be killed on sight. He is believed to be hiding in a farm outside of Edo proper. This information is three days old.”

Mirai went cold. When she'd signed up for this class, she’d assumed it would be something simple and relatively risk-free, like tracking an animal. But now these orders were telling her that not only did they have to track down a dangerous criminal, they were supposed to kill him once they’d found him? Keeping her hands from trembling was a struggle right then. The teacher said something, but Mirai only just registered it, and she went inside the barn in an almost daze-like state.

It wasn't necessarily that Mirai was unable to fathom being in a fight or even trying to kill someone - though admittedly, the latter thought did make her shudder internally a little; it was something she’d never before had to seriously consider that she might have to do. Her reaction was more the shock from it being just so entirely unexpected. When turning up today she hadn't prepared herself mentally for the eventuality that she might be involved in killing someone.

Seeing another student begin to investigate, Mirai breathed in and out, deeply and rhythmically, and followed suit; she ignored the gorier aspects of the scene - namely the katana, the clothes, and the pig carcass - and headed for the bucket full of food. She would pull out each item, inspect it to check what kind of food it was, if there were any signs that some of it had been eaten, and also how fresh the food was. Once she had inspected each piece of food individually she would also consider the overall quantity and type of the food.

Ash listened to the order with curiosity. It was a first class for him, and he was already tasked with finding and taking out a target. He sighed to himself before watching the other students move into the barn. Ash figured that yet another set of eyes looking at the same exact things wasn't going to help find any new information, so Ash moved to the outside of the barn to observe the environment around it.

He looked for obvious things at first, footprints, blood trails, and broken windows, before moving to see if he could find less obvious stuff such as broken twigs in the surrounding area on bushes or trees. He would assume that someone on the inside would find something about what happened in there, but importantly someone needed to find out where he went after.

Rai quietly loaded her rifle as she watched two of the students go into the barn. Ash seemed more interested in the outside of the building. Kurome was a new elite, so on the same level as Rai. The key difference being that Kurome was stationed at Edo Bugei while Rai was often sent to track targets across Japan. It was rare to see the elite sniper actually at the Bugei proper. However the class needed a teacher and Rai's current target happened to be outside of the city.

The first inspection was Kurome's. She decided to inspect the clothing and the sword left behind. The blood on the sword looked old, as though someone had been murdered and the blood had just been left to rust away the blade. This blood looked older than three days, however. It looked as though Masatana had never bothered cleaning the blade. The blood on the clothing was a different story, however. The blood on the clothing looked to only be about two days old and splattered in large sprays. The clothing also appeared to belong to a woman around Kurome's age. The clothing itself was badly cut up with the blood centered around the slash marks. Most likely it had been Masatana's latest victim. Best Kurome would be able to tell the clothing had no pig blood on it. Though the floor around her certainly did.

The second part of the inspection was Mirai's. As she inspected the bucket it all appeared to be pig meat. A bloody trail rested between the pig's corpse and the bucket. However for how much of the pig was missing from it's body, the bucket seemed scarcely filled. Next to the bucket Mirai would find two plastic wrappers from a convenience store chain popular in Eastern Edo. She would also find a broken fake nail that had been pained light blue, and unfortunately a human thumb that looked to belong to a young lady.

Finally Ash was looking around the outside of the barn. A small house was near by. Most likely whoever owned the barn. Outside Ash would find a lot of old footprints and trails between the barn and the house but only one set of fresh footprints, along with what appeared to be a trail behind it as though something was dragged into the barn from outside. The same set of footprint also appeared to be going from the barn and then away from it. however the footprint seemed deeper into the dirt this time. As though the person's weight had changed dramatically.

Looking at all three of them from the entrance to the barn Rai quietly asked.
"How long ago did he leave? What did he take with him? What did he do here?" and would wait for each person to give individual answers based on what they had found. Then looking at Mirai she said
"I wouldn't look under the pig, or in it's stomach." being aware of how unnerved Mirai already seemed.

Ash would return to the barn to meet with the others just as their instructor was asking his questions. With incomplete information, all Ash could do was share what he learned. "Tracks leading away. He is carry something, possibly body." He didn't want to unnerve the already pale looking Mirai, but they had to take into consideration that there was another victim, at least a kidnapping. "Lack of blood at tracks say either alive or long dead." An attempt to be hopeful that if there was a victim, they were alive. What they saw here, however, would say otherwise.

Ash would stay quiet afterwards, waiting to hear the other information that had been gathered. He had thought to ask the instructor if he had any information on missing people, but kept the thought to himself for the time being.

As the other students move around to inspect the area, she looked closer at the bloodied rags before her. The blood seemed crusty and old on the blade. It appeared as though it was starting to rust slightly. Whoever used the blade didn't see to care enough for their weapons to keep them clean..

She frowned and looked at the clothes, using a nearby stick to push the around. The clothing looked newer, and splattered in a spray fashion. It was also heavily cut to shreds, appearing as though the person who wore these, a woman maybe?, was slashed to pieces. 'Easier to hide a body in peices.' She thought to herself. If it was a woman, the clothing looked to match the style that females her age would wear. She wondered if maybe a student had gone missing, and if so, who ?

Kurome looked up and over to where the pig's blood was. She was unable to tell if the blood on the sword was that of the pigs, but it was obvious the sword was not used to cut up the poor woman who was now most likely dead, and in pieces. 'Heh, rest in pieces.' She thought coldly to herself. She turned and walked outside to listen to what Ash had to say.

Kurome looked him over. He was at her birthday party. He was the one who left so suddenly she never got a chance to say goodbye. For some reason, Kurome felt like the girl she was at the birthday party was completely different from who she was now. She crossed her arms and faced the teacher, responding to his response.

"It appears the body of the girl he killed may be in pieces. The sword inside of the building was not used as the weapon. If Ash is right, he may have carried the body away. Perhaps in a bag, or in pieces. It would be easier to bury or hide a body if it's chopped up. Also, easier to carry if it's one person."

She looked back out to where Ash was in inspecting the area."Senpai, has anyone in the school gone missing lately? " Kurome frowned and looked down. Usually the teachers sent the elites on scouting missions to find missing students. If this girl had gone missing a few days ago, it was unusual that no one would notify the elites. Perhaps this whole class was a ruse...

Mirai swallowed a lump in her throat at the sight of all the blood. It’s just pig blood, she told herself. Nothing to worry about. You eat pig sometimes. Still, her hands trembled a little as she bent down and turned over the plastic wrappers; she recognised them from a franchise of convenience stores. So whoever the man they were hunting had been in Edo recently to shop for snacks or a meal? Mirai glanced at the gory mess inside the bucket; it appeared to be full of flesh, though the bucket was barely filled. Mirai reached into the bucket and prodded the pig meat, moving it to the side to check if there was anything underneath it. She wondered if the bucket was so empty because someone had already used some of the meat, or whether they had simply not cut that much to begin with.

That was when Mirai noticed the blue fake nail. She picked it up, careful to try not to break it more, and turned it over in her palm. Where could it have come from? Did it belong to the person they were chasing and it had fallen off by mistake? But why would they have just left it there on the ground? Actually, why had they left any of this here…?

And then Mirai noticed the thumb. For a moment Mirai just knelt there blinking, trying to process if what she was seeing was actually what she was seeing. Again, she tried to swallow the lump in her throat, but the reassurance “you eat that sometimes” couldn’t really extend to this situation.

That was a thumb. Right there in front of her, an actual, dismembered human thumb. Mirai felt like throwing up; in fact she did sort of throw up, just a little bit in her mouth, which she swallowed down again. She supposed she had an answer of where the fake nail came from now.

She glanced at Rai as the elite student asked for their assessment of the scene and cautioned Mirai that looking at the pig might not be a such a great idea for Mirai, though really this didn’t do much to help because it set her off imagining all kinds of things that might potentially be in the pig’s stomach, most notably the rest of whoever that thumb belonged to. Mirai carefully controlled her breathing, trying to calm the queasy feeling in her own stomach.

She took in the others' assessments of the scene: apparently the person they were hunting had left tracks leading away from the scene, and he was carrying something with him; in addition, it was definite that he had killed someone, and it was possible that he had chopped the body up into pieces afterwards. He may have even taken the body with him.

It was disgusting. Not just the scene, which was indeed very disgusting, but his acts; why would someone do that to another person? Mirai’s attempt at a breathing exercise hadn’t done much to get rid of that sick feeling in her belly (and the other’s assessment of the scene hadn’t taken away from it either) but it did at least give her the courage to speak somewhat calmly, even if there was a tremble in her voice to begin with.

“Well, there - there was a whole thumb over there, so I think maybe you’re right, Senpai, about the body being in pieces, but…” She took a breath. “What about the pig? Why is there a pig’s body in here, and why was some of it chopped up? And why did the, um, killer just leave everything here for us to find?” For all the questions she was asking, Mirai wasn’t sure of the answers to any of them. But maybe one of the others would be able to help her there.

NPC POST

The elite listened to the three as they gave ideas about the killer and nodded as she listened to them. Looking coldly inside the barn she pointed to the rusted blade "Old, likely previous weapon." then pointed at the clothing Kurome had found and then at the bucket. "He chopped up the pig and likely the girl. I can't tell if it is one girl or two. Either way, he enjoys cutting into things and didn't leave his weapon here. Armed." then finally pointed to the tracks. "He moved quickly, he couldn't cover his tracks, or didn't care to." that was the general idea anyway. Masatana had moved quickly, and apparently in a hurry after camping out for a few days. What exactly it was the student's couldn't be sure of just yet.
"Good job." she said as she looked at the three.

"Senpai, has anyone in the school gone missing lately?" Kurome asked. It felt strange being called Senpai since they both happened to be elites. However, as the teacher for this strange "class" of sorts, Rai certainly was Senpai this time around.
"I don't think Masatana target Bugei students." she said coldly. For those that were extremely observant like Kurome she would notice that as Rai said the words her left hand formed the shape of holding a gun trigger as Rai's left hand squeezed in hard. It would only be for a moment though. Apparently the thought made the sniper clearly aggravated.
"Masatana targets commoners in Eastern Edo." and with that Rai looked at the footprints then back at the bucket.
"He took food." and with that the group would follow the footsteps to the entrance to a long, wooded area.

As they entered leaves and twigs would crumble under the weight of the group's foot steps. In front of them, a long trail. It wasn't very wide but it was clearly a trail in the dirt.
"Humans are animals. They will take the easiest path. Such as a game trail." Rai explained as she started walking along the dirt trail. As she walked she pointed at broken branches and snapped twigs in front of them as she stopped.
"The twigs are too crushed to be a rabbit. The branches are broken too far away to not be a wide creature." it implied that the group was following someone large, or a lot of large creatures took this trail, not just small animals like rabbits or squirrels.
"Bear, tiger, human." she said as she looked at the branches around them before looking directly at the group.
"No fur." but sadly, no footprints could be seen either. the dirt trail had a lot of leaves on it and while a bit slipper didn't have any clear footprints.
"What would you do now?" Rai asked the group.

Ash would be the first to speak up. "We follow last direction they travel. More clue might appear." It was a simple suggestion, but possibly incorrect. He was best with tracking animals back home, and humans were far different. They could cover their tracks if they were smart enough, and could easily elude someone who was trying to follow them. The only part that made it more difficult for the possible murderer is that he was carrying a body with him.

It was easy to cover your tracks if you're alone with only your equipment. You can use thick grass to walk through to avoid leaving footprints, you can take less wooded paths to avoid damaging the surrounding branches, among other things. With a large package or body, you may not be aware of the clues that it is leaving. There may not be any evidence to follow yet, but with the only footprints they had was a clear direction of travel, and they may have left evidence farther down the path.
