~Combat Basics~

Combat on Sengoku Horizon is very free form. Your character will be able to do two or three actions a turn. Actions mean physical attacks, throwing an object, running away of towards someone full speed, or activating a relic power. Physical attack means attacking with your weapon, your feet, anything that isn't Relic use related. Obviously the stronger the attack the less attacks you get per post. A really light weapon such as a rapier would get the full three attacks, where as a single heavy club or a strong arrow shot is only one per post. What we don't want is people putting so many attacks the other person can't properly counter, or saying "Well I hit you with so much stuff you can't counter that in your post!" that is cheating.
When responding to a combat post please respond to all of the attacks thrown at you before launching your own. Also, take your hits. Your character isn't perfect, please don't expect to dodge and perfectly block everything. Keep in mind that RP posts are about good story telling and character's struggles, not about seeing who can make their character sound more god like.

~Weapon Use~

Please keep in mind that unless previously stated the weapons used in combat on this site are very real. Fortunately your combat uniform from the academy can absorb attacks and handle different climates fairly well, though it is by no means indestructible. Their is an NPC doctor that can cure wounds and restore limbs, but with serious restrictions.
If you are going to use the back of the weapon, or a lower powered attack in order to stop someone without killing them then please specify this in your post so everyone is aware. Also, don't just suddenly pull a weapon out of nowhere or say a trap went off if you didn't mention having that weapon at the start of the thread or setting up that trap in previous posts.

~Damage System~

If during combat your character got stabbed multiple times, shot, burnt, etc. we don't expect you to just shrug that off. We would like your character, in role play, to be in a cast for a few threads, or talk a few times about how much the residual damage hurts. It will provide a surprising amount of depth to your future posts as you talk about how you got a scar or why your character is spending two months worth of threads with an arm sling.

~Poisons~

Poisons exist on the site. Poisons will be judged on a case by case basis in your application and will require specifics such as what your poison does and how many turns they take to effect someone.
Sengoku Horizon uses a dose system. basically "each hit gives the enemy a dose of poison. please put how many doses it takes for the poison to take effect or how strong it is at each dose". Poisons will be put in the weapons section of your character application below your weapon.
If you want to craft a poison you need to write out what it does, and staff will approve it and add it to the app under weapons. Once approved you will still need an IC thread to make it though.

~Details~

Details are the biggest part of RPing combat. If you aren't sure how to extend an RP combat post more detail is always better. Instead of just saying you swing your sword why not add detail? Talking of the sound of the blade moving through the air, about the strain of repeated sword attacks, or the hard clash or your blade against that of the enemy? About what is on your character's mind during the fight? Consider describing your character planning his or her next attack, or the effect of your battlefield upon your character such as feeling overheated or slipping on a wet or muddy surface while trying to attack.

~Relic Abilities~

Relics have two types of abilities. Those two types are: activated and passive.

An activated ability is an ability that one triggers. It has a large, quick use effect such as a special attack, or a healing ability, etc. (These abilities have a cooldown time, unless stated the standard is 1,3,5.)

A passive ability is an ability that is always in effect such as making the user of the item harder to see when holding it, raising their attack when they have the item on them, etc.

*Activated abilities have more powerful effects than passive abilities, however any bonuses granted by activated abilities have a turn limit, and all activated abilities have a set power usage. Going to 100% or over will hurt your body since you are drawing extra energy.

Also of note, class paths don't determine relic abilities, but will modify them. For instance a medic student will be able to heal a bit better with a healing type sacred item than say a crafting or diplomat type student.
~Using Abilities~

When someone uses a relic's powers they are pulling the residual spirit energy of a famous person into their body. The relic itself acts as both container and filter for this large amount of energy.

Activated 1: means drawing out a small amount of power to create a small affect. Think of these as your rapid use low power generic ability. Usually these only effect yourself to a small degree or a single target. Examples include a quick fireball, or a small heal. The point is these aren't very strong powers. (One turn cooldown.)

Activated 2: Draws out more of that power. It has a medium power and medium charge time. Think of this as your staple power. These can effecting a group to a low extent, or an individual to a higher degree. Examples would include a small group heal or buff, or a medium powered single heal or attack. Your go to ability. (Three turn cooldown.)

Activated 3: Your second most powerful ability. These abilities have large effects and large cooldowns. This can be a fairly large attack or heal. This is your flashy power attack.(Five turns cooldown.)

Passive Abilities: Less powerful than activated but are always in effect, thus they have no cool down period. Think of the power of these being between an activated 1 and 2. If some passives are particular overpowered we may ask you include conditions for it activating.

~Awakened Mode~

Awakened Mode is an extremely dangerous technique activated by allowing a vast amount of your relic's energy into your body at one time. During awakened mode your speed, strength, and defense are all amplified. Unfortunately the human body isn't meant to take this much energy at once. Due to this a person can only stay in awakened mode for three rounds of combat at the absolute maximum. After leaving Awakened Mode you will be extremely fatigued regardless of using your awakened attack or not.

~Awakened Attack~

An Awakened attack is an attack done almost entirely with the powers of your relic. By pulling all of the power in your relic into your body and unleashing it as an attack you are able to use an attack far outside the boundaries of a normal human body. It is not uncommon to have a series of flashbacks and dreams about your relic's original owner after having used an awakened attack. This powerful Awakened Attack can only be used once per thread and thus has no cooldown. It is advised you use it during the second of third round of being in awakened mode.

~Locked Abilities~

Not all abilities are available from the start. To give people a goal to work towards character wise we have locked high power abilities. To unlock new abilities and upgrade your current ones you will need to make posts and do missions to earn shop credits.

Some special items in the shops, such as unique outfits, will give you special abilities whenever you wear them. For example a phoenix robe may give you passive fire immunity, while an archer outfit may passively increase your long distance accuracy.

~Relic Destruction~

Though rare, it is possible for relics to be destroyed. Should this happen the item will obviously no longer be usable. In such an event as this the Shogunate forced within Edo Castle are to be notified at once. You will then be summoned to Edo Castle by the onmyouji within the relic vault as they attempt to fix the item. Repairing a relic is no easy task. Should your relic be destroyed you should prepare to live the rest of your days as a regular student. Depending on your standing you may even be removed from the academy. Please guard your relic carefully.
