Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 7/10/2017 A blood red summer has come. As the Edo Bugei students finish facing off with the ikko forces all across the nation a massive steel ship floats towards Edo Harbor. The final battle between the Ikko Ikki rebels and the Edo Bugei students is about to begin. The lingering question now, just how much of Edo will be left standing once the battle ends?

Bu sat in the library with her nose in a textbook. Some might think that this was out of character for her. Those people would be correct. From the right angle, it could be seen that inside the math textbook was actually a magazine catalogue with motorcycles and parts in it. That pen she held to her lips was not being used to highlight problems but to circle prospective purchases and that intense look of concentration was her building a budget.

She'd had to give up her old bike on coming to this school, passing it down to the new commander like the previous commander had passed down to her. And her bike from before was long gone. She hadn't really expected to ever need a new one which was, admittedly, foolish. Certainly she hadn't expected to need one so soon. Without a bike, Bu felt trapped, moreso than she already was. A bike meant freedom, even if you never did go riding off into the sunset to disappear forever, the fact that you could was all you needed to make staying a little more bearable.

She underlined the price of a body that she thought looked pretty good, the trick was finding one that she could comfortably straddle as well as lean against. No weird angles or boxy dsigns, she wanted it smooth, sleek, and aerodynamic. Speed was nice, especially if you could get that good kick off that threw you back into yourself, but more importantly was the look of it right now. She didn't expect races on the street or crazy chases in the night, she expected an attack to come while she was doing nothing on campus. Any danger would be coming to her so souping up the engine into something special could wait until later.

A few banners and flags would bring the whole thing together but she was a ronin now, a girl without a gang. She'd have to join a new gang which was not her scene, or start a new gang among the preppy nobles and wannabe heroes of the academy. That was just as unappetizing. Maybe she ought to check the history of her new legacy. She was a sion now, whatever that meant for her. Perhaps there'd be some thing in history to give her an idea what she should do, but she didn't feel optimistic about it. Nobody in history rode motorcycles and did anything cool.

Iwao was already in the library, stoic and aloof. He was reading a book on what appeared to be a copy of the school handbook. He was sitting in a way too prim and proper fashion for anyone to be real. If there was not such a colorful cast at the school he'd have stood out as a parody of a "dutiful student". However, despite how readily he seemed to be devouring the old school rules it was obvious to anyone who looked over his large-framed shoulders that he was using more or less the same trick the girl a table over was. Except- inside his book was a magazine on new-age conspiracy theories. It included headlines like, "Ghosts in your basement? More likely than you thought!", "The Shogun is an Alien. Full story on page 6.", and "What is the Connection Between the Samurai Caste and the Freemasons?!".

When no one else was in the library Iwao flicked his eyes to the left and right, making sure the two were alone before he said in a low, direct, and serious voice, "You know the motorcycle manufacturers here use metals mined from a graveyard. A horse is much safer to ride."

His statement, as insane as it sounded, was dead serious and Iwao offered her a reassuring nod after he said it- as if he had just passed on top-secret information.

Bu had a rough idea of what she wanted now, or what she wanted would look like and cost. She wondered if she could make some modifications herself or if it would be better to have a real mechanic make them. She could be handy with a tool or too but Bu knew she wasn't the same thing as a professional. Maybe she could give it a try and then move on from there. It was from this mental debate that she was pulled when a hushed voice said...well, said that.

She turned her head slowly to look at him. He was a pretty big dude but was sitting so straight. It was like a cartoon character. She turned her head slowly back to her magazine and looked at the parts and pieces. What was she supposed to say? Was she supposed to say anything? She couldn't deny it was true but that was stupid. She turned slowly to look back at the guy. "They have to make room for the bodies, doncha know." she said finally, measured tones diminishing her accent.

Plus, horses were awful, a bit of graveyard dirt never hurt anyone. Who gave a crap about ancestors anyway, they were dead so whatever they could do hadn't done anything to stop that. Besides, a few angry ghosts were better than a horse, ghosts couldn't scare a motorbike but horses got spooked by everything.

Again Iwao’s eyes flicked around to room conspiratorially. He leaned forward, letting his book (and the hidden conspiracy theory mag) be seen unintentionally.
“Those are words from the mouth of someone who has obviously never seen a ghost.” He announced in a low voice, crossing his arms.
“Our past lives with us- in our minds if not in the physical world. It’s best not to disturb the dead. Horses are much better.”

He was assured of this and it came across loud and clear in his voice.

Bu frowned. This guy was either crazy or he didn't understand how utterly awful horses were. "Don't need to see a ghost. Ah see a ghost then Ah'll just punch it in the face or ride away on my motorcycle. Ghosts can't run as fast as Ah can drive, let me tell you."

She shook her head. "Ghost cheases a horse and that rider is going to get thrown off right into the ghost's claws." She turned in her chair to focus on this plainly insane guy. "Horses are evil and would sacrifice you to a ghost or kappa or anything the moment they had a chance. Motorcycles are loyal." She spoke firmly, putting a great deal of solemnity and weight into her words.

He had mixed his metaphors a bit- he had been referring to ancestors but that worked too.

“I don’t know about that. I grew up in Rikuchu and none of our horses ran. None of our people ran either. Ghosts are not that bad if you grow up around them.”

Now... he hadn’t actually SEEN a physical manifestation of ghosts but he had grown up overseeing so many festivals and rites to them that he knew the omens and portents pretty well.

“Motorcycles don’t have loyalty. A properly raised horse does.”

His face was deadset, super serious about something so filly.

"They were just being patient. Horses are good at that. Eventually you trust them and suddenly they roll over and break your leg. Ah heard a story about it, my friends uncle's cousin had it happen to him and the horse got up and trotted off. Just left him in the woods to get eaten by a bear. Horses are mean." She was pretty confident in her own assertions, and just as serious.

"Motorcycles are things, you get out what you put in. You treat them nice and they'll treat you even better. And if I get a free ghost mechanic out of the deal, all the better. But none of my ancestors rode so Ah'll just go without, thank you very much."
