BACKGROUND: Byōki grew up. That is the only thing that can be said for certain by anyone who met him or knew of his existence. If you could see through time and space, you would see a young albino child growing up in a violent household. Born to a woman and a man, and considered a curse upon them by his father. He was never given a name, and was only taught to speak by his mother and from the streets that he often wandered in his nameless town.
His father became a drunk after disgracing himself as a samurai, failing to protect someone he was hired by. Taking the title of ronin, he took to the same streets his curse of a son did, though ending up in a gutter more often than not. The beatings got worse, and it became a joyful time when Byoki's father was not home, and his loving mother would embrace him, and sing lullabies through the night, whispering how she appreciated him, the nameless son.
One night, Byoki's father returned home. Drunk. Angry. Violent. Beating the child within an inch of his life, finally giving him a name. Byoki, Sickness. His mother in a fit of self defense, used a butcher knife to stab the poor child's father repeatedly. He was still alive, and with a meat cleaver, she removed his fingers, hands, and started working on his arms before realizing he had perished. She dropped the cleaver, horrified at her deed, and took her son on the run, eventually ending up in a forest at the base of Mt. Fuji, Aokigahara, The Sea of Trees.
A distraught mother desperate for release from the terrible life she was living. Two ropes and a common location. She and her son were to leave the world behind in the branches of the forest of Aokigahara. By luck, or some higher purpose, one rope snapped, leaving a distraught Byoki behind in the world, as she passed into the gates of the afterlife alone.
He was found by a search party doing a routine exploration to find unfortunate people who have decided that life was too much. He was found more malnourished than he is now, and unresponsive even though his eyes were open. He was taken to a hospital where he remained in semi-unresponsive condition for quite some time. He regained some weight as he was fed through an intravenous means, but stayed quiet and did not talk to anyone.
One day, he responded. A nurse who was doing a normal round was coming to perform routine tests on the poor boy, he smiled at her. Shocked, she ran to go get a doctor, but while she was out, Byoki used this opportunity to move for the first time in a long time. He weakly stretched out and grabbed a syringe that was on the side table and plunged it into his chest, piercing his heart. When the doctor returned the monitor in his room showed a flatline; he had died.
A sheet pulled over his head signified that he had indeed passed on, and yet the monitor faintly beeped to the hospital staff's surprise. The syringe that had been left in was pushed out by some unknown force and fell harmlessly to the side, rolled from the bed, and fell to the floor. They observed his condition as it returned to a normal pulse only a few minutes before a fatal wound, the blood from the wound staining the sheets and his clothing. The academy was contacted. He came to the academy under the guidance of a special council whom Byoki knew none of. Deemed too dangerous with a relic to let him wander the country, he needed to be trained, conditioned, and controlled.
