Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 04/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. They have come to learn more about the state of Japan, the Shogunate, and it's Scions. We will be having a Lunar New Year's celebration, a school dance, and a combat tournament with them!

For some the Lunar New Year was a time for small gathering, a bit of prayer, tea, and focusing on one's self. Not at one of the massive temples in Northern Edo but a humble, smaller shrine in Western Edo. This was the type of place Hoshi had come too today. Western Edo was a fancy place mostly for Shogunate officials, the rich, the elderly, and other various nobles. However it also had small temples, tea houses, and a beautiful library.

Among the many sites in Western Edo, however, one stood out. It was a Chinese man in beautiful blue and gold clothing with a large gold peacock on the back of his sky blue jacket over a blue shirt. The man was Zihao Men, the inheritor of Cao Cao of Wei and one of the Chinese Scions that was currently staying at Edo Bugei. It was clear he hadn't noticed Hoshi yet but was more so just walking around the area. His arms crossed and a rather unpleasant look upon his face he seemed absolutely lost. It was also strange to see him without his female bodyguard. It was likely he had come to Western Edo to explore and was now unsure of how to return to the school, or any train station for that matter. After all, for the sake of beauty Western Edo had never been well marked. This was mostly due to the resident's fear that signs everywhere would disturb the beauty of the large mansion house districts.

Hoshi walked down the street to the shrine, carrying a softcaseand her satchel. Instead of her usual naginata, the case held a shakujo and gohei while a shrine maiden's outfit was in the satchel. She stopped from time to time to admire the view of Western Edo, but not for long since she had a duty to perform. She picked up the pace and hurried towards the small temple where she was supposed to go.

About a block or so away from the temple, she noticed a man who seemed quite lost. It would be bad luck to not help someone right before she went to do her sacred duty so she walked up to him, "um, hello. Do you need help?" She spoke as loudly as she could but she wasn't sure if he would be able to hear her. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

Zihao was walking through the streets looking at the various houses, not wanting to admit just how lost he was. He may have been a noble from China, but geography wasn't one of his strong points. At least not in a foreign land. Walking around a girl suddenly came up to him. The girl seemed to be the age of a student. He couldn't tell if she was from Edo Bugei or not and at the moment that didn't matter.
"um, hello. Do you need help?" She asked.

The Chinese lord's gaze fell upon her. The look on his face was absolutely offended. After all the girl had actively implied that he was lost and didn't know what he was doing! How dare she! He was part of one of the most noble, oldest houses in mainland China. Crossing his arms he gazed at her with a serious look, clearly showing anger.
"How dare you imply that a high lord of the Chinese nobility need help." he scowled at the girl.
"Without even introducing yourself. Do all of the students of Japan have such a lack of manors? I am Zihao Men. I am related to rulers and scholars." he said as he approached the girl to be face to face with her. His eyes like daggers.
"However," he said and lightened both his tone and stance. As though suddenly being merciful.
"If you introduce yourself, and apologize, I will allow you to escort me. I heard a small, beautiful shrine is in the area and I demand a proper guide introduce me to it." he snorted a bit and raised his nose in the air. He was truly a noble that refused to admit any such thing as flaws. After all, flaws only existed for the lower classes.

Aaahhhh.....so this guy was one of those types. Still, she was going to make a point of not being petty for something like this. She was better. And also Masami would kick her ass up and down Edo if she ever found out Hoshi was being rude, "Very well. I am Hikita Sama" if he actually believed that, she would get a kick out of it since technically she had introduced herself, "Welcome to Edo milord. Unfortunately all the proper guides are currently busy with groups of gaijin touring our fine country. I do apologize for that inconvenience that a noble shouldn't have to suffer. Perhaps I may be able to show you interesting things that peak your interest on the way to the temple?"

Hoshi spoke with a perfectly straight face and with utter sincerity. Technically, she told no lies so her tic that always gave it away didn't happen. And who knows, maybe Zihao Men wasn't a mean person, just really crabby...At least Hoshi hoped he wasn't an ass as she waited for his answer.

"Very well. I am Hikita Sama" she said with a confident look about her. Zihao folded his arms about as she continued.
"Welcome to Edo milord. Unfortunately all the proper guides are currently busy with groups of gaijin touring our fine country. I do apologize for that inconvenience that a noble shouldn't have to suffer. Perhaps I may be able to show you interesting things that peak your interest on the way to the temple?" a smile quickly spread across the Chinese noble's face. After all, this was how any foreign lord should be treated. With grace, and respect! She had introduce herself properly, and to the best of his understanding of her Japanese had offered to guide him to the temple. With a defiant stare and firm nod Zihao proclaimed.
"Very well. I accept your offer." truly he had bestowed a great gift upon this commoner, even if she had yet to realize. it.

In the best Japanese he could, he then proceeded to introduce himself.
"Be aware you escort Zihao Men. A member of China's five most elite families and inheritor of the power and will of lord Cao Cao of the kingdom of Wei." as though to make it clear he quickly waved his hand as blue flames appeared around it before dispelling, leaving a slight chill in the air and on the back of Hikita's neck.
"I look forward to seeing what this land has to offer. I have heard many great things about the temples within Edo and do not wish to be disappointed." he stated bluntly. After all, this was how he was use to addressing people. It wasn't as though he himself was aware of how much of an ass he was coming off as. He was just acting the way he always had. Most of the time, at her behest, he simply left dealing with the majority of people to his bodyguard who unfortunately hadn't come with him today.

Hoshi smiled and turned, "this way then." Her smile turned a bit sadistic. As someone in the infiltration track, this would be a test of how much she could get away with messing with someone. If Zihao Men continued to be an unrepentant ass, she would show him "historic" sites. Of course she would have to be a bit quick about it. She led the way down that alley is where two of Nobunga's trusted advisors had a duel over a woman. She tried to stop them only to be cut into thirds. The men killed themselves in a fit of anguish." She pointed at a random house a few blocks down, "they say this place is haunted. Four hundred years ago, everyone living in there was found hanging from the rafters by hooks through their chests."

She then reached the temple, "this is where I work on occasion." She headed for the temple stairs. Compared to the Grand temples in the higher traffic areas, it was a modest affair, not lacking in the design or anything like that. But it looked more refined, as if the lack of attention had made it into something else. She reached the top of the steps, "we'really rehearsing for the new year, I don't think it'll hurt if you watch, but please keep your speech to a minimum." She had seen other nobles watching, so it might be alright provided Zihao didn't make a distraction.

"they say this place is haunted. Four hundred years ago, everyone living in there was found hanging from the rafters by hooks through their chests." Zihao's eyes got large in shock. This entire thing was amazing to him. Pulling out his phone he quickly took some pictures of the area. He had heard a lot about the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga and many compared him to the ancient Lord Cao Cao that Zihao received his own powers from.
"Fascinating!" Zihao proudly declared.

After taking plenty of pictures the Chinese noble followed his new tour guide to a small temple. It didn't seem as grand as the ones he had heard about but it certainly possessed it's own charm in many ways. When asked to watch a performance Zihao gave a serious, stern head nod. As though declaring that such things where beneath him, but he would do it if only to humor Hoshi. After all, in Zihao's mind he was, of course, a truly benevolent lord.
"Very well, I will watch." he said simply.

Hoshi smiled as she went to change. The temple was almost exactly identical to where she had grown up and so she had no trouble going where she needed to. A couple minutes later, she emerged from the room wearing her shrine maiden clothes and carried out her shakujo and gohei, "did you hear, there's a Chinese nobleman watching us today."
"I know right? I wonder if he's cute."
"Of course he is, Hikita-san has all kinds of luck. Poor girl is oblivious to it though." Hoshi quirk ed an eyebrow at the overheard conversation.

She walked to the main shrine and prepared herself for the rituals that would greet the new year. She let her mind clear itself as she had been taught and took her spot and waited for the music to start. The sound of the instruments flowed through the building like water as she matched her movement with those of the other girls and the song. For a time, nothing else existed except for the music and the dance as Hoshi moved gracefully along.

When it ended, she glanced at Zihao to see his reaction. Even the most hard hearted men had been moved by witnessing such a thing. She would be surprised if he didn't show any kind of reaction at all.

Zihao gladly followed Hoshi to the temple. It was a lovely temple that clearly a shinning example of Japanese architecture. Being a noble he knew of plenty of social conventions. For instance it would be extremely rude for his phone to go off during a live performance. Thus he pulled out his phone before it started and turned it to silent and turned the vibrate off before putting it back away and crossing his arms.

As her and the other dancers came out Zihao's eyes widened a bit. They looked quite lovely, beautiful even! As the music started playing and the dance began he barely seemed to blink, and certainly was giving them his full attention. It was like a hawk watching prey. The way they danced was truly splendid and at the end of the performance Zihao clapped. He was truly entertained.

The normally arrogant looking Zihao smiled a bit and nodded at the women with his absolute approval. He was too noble to shout or yell things like some kind of foolish, drunk peasant. Though his nodding and clapping was more than enough.

Hoshi smiled as she heard the clapping, another man had fallen for the beauty of the dance. She opened her eyes and bowed in his direction as the girls started walking off to get drinks, "I take it you enjoyed the show?" She sat next to Zihao and took a drink from her water bottle. She had to admit that he maybe wasn't as bad as he seemed at first. Still, he was pretty rude when they met so she would stick to her plan to mess with him.

She was still at a loss as to what she had overheard, what did they mean I have all kinds of luck? She twirled her gohei in her hand as she thought. Life had a way of being strange. She knew about the facts if life and had on occasion played matchmaker for other girls back home. She was also aware that she had a blindspot when it came to her own relationships but it seemed surreal to her.

She looked at him, "Since we have time before the ceremony, I could take you to a few places of interest beforehand." She pulled a robe over her shrine maiden outfit and stood up. She knew a nice little mom and pop store that sold the best dango in Edo and would lead him there for dinner.

As Hoshi walked over to Zihao the nobleman seemed to be in focused thought. Asking what he thought of the performance he slowly moved his gaze over to her, as though just realizing she had come up beside him. Turning his gaze back to where the performance had taken place he nodded a bit, as though reassuring himself of his answer before looking back at Hoshi.
"Unique. Incredible." his Japanese wasn't as great as he would have liked, so he thought carefully on how to say the words he needed, and that was what he had arrived at. He looked happy and seemed as though he truly had enjoyed the performance.

"Since we have time before the ceremony, I could take you to a few places of interest beforehand." she suggested. Taking a few moments to translate her words in his head he then nodded and stood up.
"Very well. I look forward to seeing where else you take me." his words came out slow but his Japanese was very well spoken. It would also be easy to notice that even when he wasn't sure how to say a word, or said a word wrong, he still kept his back straight and his eyes focused. It was as though even when it came to foreign language Zihao refused to ever make or admit mistakes. It would remind Hoshi a lot of the sons and daughters of famous clan lords back at Edo Bugei.

Hoshi smiled shyly as she led the way, "There's not very many historically significant things this way, but they're still pretty interesting." She led him over a small foot bridge where she stopped and pointed at the ducks and fish, "this spot is nice for just thinking. Too many people feel like they can't live without constant motion and action." She didn't think any less of those people, but it did make her sad that they missed out on the quiet, still moments that happened from time to time.

A bit further along, she led Zihao to a park with massive, ancient trees, "they say the trees are home to good spirits, guiding them between the worlds of the living and dead." She clapped her hands and made a short prayer before leading her guest further along to the shop, "this is the place. They have the best dang here, and the ramen is nothing to sneeze at. Of course their curry is pretty good too." She couldn't decide which she wanted besides her favorite treat. It was a good thing they had plenty of time.

Zihao followed Hoshi carefully. This older area of Edo was truly beautiful as Hoshi had said. Looking around at the small bridge and pond they traveled over he watched the fish. Koi where plentiful in China as well, and his family had many ponds full of them. Still though, the air in Edo was different than the mansions back home, and it was still a new discovery to him.
"How lovely." he said simply as they moved on to the ancient trees. Zihao's first reaction, of course, was to want to reach for his phone. However, he decided it was best not to. After all, it felt wrong to him to ruin the moment with a phone. The trees looked truly lovely and he made sure to stare at it for as long as he reasonably could, engraving the image upon his mind.
"they say the trees are home to good spirits, guiding them between the worlds of the living and dead." Hoshi said as Zihao looked upon them, praying for good health for himself, all of his family, and all of his men and women in waiting. His family's butlers, and his drivers back home. All of them mattered to him. After all, all of them helped keep his family alive.

"How grand." he said as the two finally arrived at a restaurant. For the first time, he would get to try something he had always been curious about. Stepping forward confidently he looked at Hoshi.
"I have always wished to try Japanese ramen. Have no fear, of course, I will get your food as well." he said with a gleam in his eyes, decidedly gloating about how much money he had to simply throw around.
"You may, of course, get whatever you'd like."
