Tagami Yumiko no clan
HAIR: Short and Black. Yumiko's hair is naturally very frizzy, especially after a shower or in the rain.
EYES: Large, dark brown eyes.
WEIGHT: Roughly 95 pounds.
BODY TYPE: Yumiko has a small, pale build.
STYLE: When not in her school outfit Yumiko wears very conservative but cute clothing. Cute sweaters with animals on them, large scarves, cat ear hats in winter and fall. She doesn't show much skin but definitely has a cute clothing style about her.
OTHER: A small brown watch around her wrist, her cell phone, and her school i.d. are always with her. She is most notable, however, for never being seen without a black bound notebook with the kanji for poetry on the front of it and at least two pins to write with.
Yumiko has a very carefree nature to her. She is a free spirit who simply observes things happening around her and writes about them. It doesn't seem like much stresses her out, though at the same time when she expresses positive emotions they don't through as clearly as others. It is why she enjoys people who can express themselves freely, since her own emotions are better expressed in the poems she writes about situations, than what actually comes out of her mouth.
STRENGTHS: Yumiko has a very poetic voice. Her smooth word flow and calming voice tend to sooth hotter tempers around her. She has a natural calming effect on people. She is also a very peaceful person. Many would find it difficult to make her upset or enraged.
WEAKNESSES: The way Yumiko talks tends to confuse others. Those that don't understand poetry, or don't care for the arts, would tend to get annoyed with her very quickly and not understand her ways of communicating with them. She also can't stand to see poetry writing burned, torn, soiled, crumpled, etc. if someone destroyed a poetry book she was reading, or especially her own book of poetry she keeps with her and writes in, she would probably break down emotionally.
LIKES: : Haiku, poetry from all over Asia, nature, writing, self expressive people, art.
DISLIKES: People who don't understand poetry, violence.
AMBITIONS: Yumiko wants to write a perfect haiku. A single piece of work she can call her own to rival the famous poet Matsuo Basho
FEARS: Yumiko fears dying in combat. She is not a warrior, and does not wish to be. She doesn't want a warrior's death, and doesn't really like hearing others talk about killing.
WEAPON: Yumiko carries a single curved dagger on her. It was given to her as a gift from the elite student Kajiwara Masumi.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE: Dance of Light Blossoming
• Tagami Katsuo: Her father and mentor. He is a master poet and often spent time with his daughter writing poetry together as she was growing up.
• Tagami Miki: A writer for a local paper. She loves poetry but has almost no talent for it herself. Though she still supports her husband and daughter when they write and recite their poetry.
• Kajiwara Masumi: An elite student Yumiko visited after she saw him summon a bird from his window. She often keeps him company as they discuss poetry together. Unfortunately Masumi himself is quite sick and doesn't often leave his dorm room. [/blockquote]
BACKGROUND: Yumiko's family mother and father had originally been born in Kyoto. Yumiko's father was the next in a long line of poets in the imperial capital, however both he and his wife found that they didn't enjoy how isolated Kyoto was from the rest of the country, or the world. In light of this at the time of this decision Miki was with child and so Katsuo decided to move to a province ruled by the Maeda clan. As one of the two main clans for war under the Tokugawa it seemed unlikely anyone would directly attack the Maeda's territory, and Katsuo at the time was slightly too old to be drafted it war did break out. thus the family moved from Kyoto to the town of Matto in Kaga.
After Yumiko was born her father briefly took a construction job in the area before returning to writting books of poetry to be published and her mother started a job as a writer for the local paper. Growing up Yumiko often spent time with her father writing and talking about poetry. She loved the poet Basho and often recited his works to both of her parents and fellow classmates. In school though she was often called out by the teachers for writing about her classmates or the animals outside instead of doing the actual schoolwork.
During public school it was a repeated cycle of teachers thinking Yumiko wasn't paying attention until her grades came in. The teachers kept being confused about how a girl who didn't seem to pay any attention did better than most of the students until her father finally explained that Yumiko's method of memorization was from poem writing and reciting. It was no different than how most people study just in poems linked to examples and definitions in her mind. This unique way of studying, plus repeated calls to old, well connected families in Kyoto, helped the Tagami family to get their young daughter accepted as first year in Edo academy. Not only did Yumiko's poetry manage to impress an official that was called to visit their house but her test scores also proved shocking.
While her parents still live in Kaga, Yumiko herself has moved to Edo in hopes of learning a lot at Edo Bugei. Not actually having combat skill but showing good memorization, penmanship, and artistic ability she was told in her acceptance letter she would be doing a lot of work as a field observer and recorder more than anything else.
Earlier this year she was following a strange looking bird and ended up at the door to Kajiwara Masumi's room. As they two began to talk she learned about Masumi's illness and Masumi learned about her love of poetry. The two quickly developed a strong friendship through mutual love of haiku and Masumi being one of the few people able to fully understand Yumiko's speech and writing styles. Recently Masumi even gave her a dagger to protect herself with in case of emergencies.
