Sengoku Horizon

Look towards the Horizon

The Warring States Period: Fierce warlords fought for control of Japan, and many would perish. When a warrior falls, where does the passion they once held go? Possibly into something dear such as a favorite weapon or heirloom. These heirlooms have been labeled as “relics”, and those that carry them are labeled as “Scions." Recently more and more of these special relics have been activating, signaling the start of a great change as ancient power meets the modern world!

Now For The Local News, 06/01/2018 The Chinese delegation have now arrived at the city of Edo. Making friends and learning about Edo Culture is their current aim! In other news it is also time for the school dance event! Please bring your characters along!

In the Poetry aisle of the Edo Bugei library, a girl was stacking books on a table. A table which, as the pile grew taller and taller, groaned with the effort of keeping itself together. It was only a small table, and the books were very large and very old. Another pile of heavy encyclopedias lay on the floor, and from time to time the girl would use them as a stepping-stool to reach a higher shelf.

There was an intensity to the girl's motions, as if she was dashing back and forth to the beating of drums. If she'd been in any other place, you'd expect to hear her whistling, or move her feet to the beat of a song played on the radio. But this was a library; thus she was quiet, and her steps were muffled explosions of dust on the marble-tiled floor.

At long last, she seemed to give up on her search, leaning back on and adding even more strain to the poor table's yoke. She dusted her skirt off with a sigh.

"I can't believe they don't have it."

Her name was Kobayashi Natsume.
HAIR: Natsume has silky black hair and keeps it long. If she ties it up to get it out of the way, she leaves the bangs and uses a ribbon or bandana to keep it out of her eyes.
EYES: Natsume has Amber eyes.
HEIGHT: Natsume is 5'9'' / 175 cm tall.
WEIGHT: A lady doesn't tell.
BODY TYPE: Natsume has a very fit - bordering on muscular - body with slight curves due to her height.
STYLE: Natsume wears traditional Japanese garb, and even in casual clothing she is seldom flamboyant. You're likely to see her in a kimono even when relaxing at home. Her favourite colour is red.
OTHER: Natsume has a very long, nasty scar on her lower back that's usually covered by her clothing.
Natsume carries a broken Jitte always on her person. It was her father's badge of office, and he used it to catch the blade of a would-be assassin. The blade broke the Jitte and injured his hand, and now it's useless as a weapon but has become a beloved keepsake of Natsume's.

"Never ignore a hunch, Natsume. Hunches are often based on subconscious observations you've made, and sometimes you need to trust the result before you scrutinize the calculation." - Kobayashi Akamaru
Selfless, but proud. Observant, but often biased, and always goes with what her gut says. Natsume is a girl of conflicting ideals, but sometimes that's exactly what you need as an investigator. Natsume has come to the academy to follow in her father's footsteps and realise her full potential. She wants to learn, she wants to improve, but above all she wants to be useful. To that end she is a diligent student and a reliable help in whatever way she can be. She never shies away from hard work, and always keeps an eye out for opportunity.
Natsume is very much a daddy's girl, and lives fully in the shadow of her ancestry. She has had a certain set of values drilled into her by her parents from a very young age, but has not had much time to discover what the world is like on her own. This makes her quick to jump to conclusions, and has made her see the world in, if not black and white, then at least a permitted/forbidden dichotomy. She's quick to judge, but has never really had to deal with what happens if her judgement is wrong, or if there is no clear right answer. A girl with not much experience in interacting with others her age, she is devoted but insecure as a friend.
STRENGTHS: Ever Vigiliant: Sometimes a child's view from below can tell us more than what we see from above. Natsume's father brought her with him as often as he could during his missions to have her gather information. Sometimes she would wander around and simply observe, sometimes she would ask questions and hope her perceived innocence would make people spill more than they wished. As a result Natsume has grown up to be extremely observant and keen. It's hard to fool her, and even harder to hide from her.
Never Hesitate: Natsume has had the mantra of her family imprinted on her since birth; that in the line of duty, a moment wasted can mean a life is spent. The Kobayashi are always on duty. Natsume is fleet of foot and a quick thinker, and never backs down when things get tough.

WEAKNESSES: Rabid Zealousy: Natsume is a devoted daughter of her father (and her family) to a fault. Any insult directed towards them or the people they serve will press her buttons. This loyalist attitude and inability to take a joke or judge the seriousness of a situation has often landed her in trouble.
Traditionalist: Natsume's father refused to use much technology in his line of work, as he believed that human interaction reveals many more answers than a tool ever could. As a result, Natsume tends to overlook tech-related clues or possibilities unless they're pointed out to her, and she has trouble using any form of electronics.
Natsume likes understanding things, or having them explained to her. She also loves explaining how things work to others.
Natsume enjoys reading and writing poetry, as her grandfather was a famous poet.
Natsume likes colourful things, like tropical fishes.
Natsume loves many unconventional foods like natto or pickled things.
Natsume is not a fan of technology, and needs to be shown how things work.
Natsume dislikes animals (she's allergic)
Natsume hates sweet things.
AMBITIONS: There has never been any question as to what Natsume should do in her life. The role of a Kobayashi must always be to serve the Shogunate, and being so close to her father has convinced her that she should be exactly like him. At the same time, it's up to everyone to find their own path in life, and joining the academy is sure to shake things up for Natsume, give her a new perspective. Given time, she'll surely find what suits her best.

WEAPON: The Naginata. Natsume is from a very traditional house (see below) and the Naginata is the favoured weapon of its female warriors. Natsume uses its reach and combined efficiency of thrusting power and fierce swings to keep enemies under control. Her fighting style is more focused on protecting others and herself rather than attacking, though sometimes offence is of course the best defence.
FAMILY: (If you have faceclaims in mind please note them.)
• Kobayashi Akamaru - Father - Investigative Official serving the Shogunate.
• Kobayashi (née Soseki) Azumi - Mother - Daughter of a famous poet.
• Takeda Takahashi - "Uncle" - A former colleague of Natsume's father, who works as a police captain.
"While there is a Shogun, there will be a Kobayashi by his side." - Kobayashi Akamaru
Natsume is from a very traditional house with a long history of both women and men of the family serving the Shogunate. They are loyal to the cause, the mandate, the role that the Shogunate has in leading the country, rather than any individual Shogun. They are often scorned by loyalists for being "too neutral." Kobayashi members are taught that they must be willing to sacrifice anything to fulfill their duty.
Natsume's father, Kobayashi Akamaru, is an investigator working closely with the shogunate. He's essentially a detective who goes where he's sent, to apply his deduction skills and experience to rooting out problems, dissidents, whatever is needed. In the past, he always used to bring Natsume with him, and thus she's been there to observe him as he visited governors or organisation leaders to see if they were corrupt, or inept. She's helped him lend a hand in managing potential scandals, or dealing with the onset of rebellion, or even solving a murder that must be kept hush-hush.
Natsume was always a favourite among her father's colleagues, and became sort of the mascot of the Edo Police Branch as a child. Even today she has many "uncles" who contact her to see if she's doing alright and what her father's up to. As an investigator, Kobayashi Akamaru is almost never at home.
In recent times:
Natsume's family home lies near the epicentre of the recent earthquake. The house and her family came through basically unscathed, but her father was away at the time and it took a long time before they could hear from him. His absence and the lack of news hit Natsume's mother very hard. Natsume's father, always one to be absorbed by his work, returned after several days only to leave again immediately to investigate. These days he's always away, and his wife is not taking it well. It was difficult for Natsume to leave her mother and enroll in the school as planned, but her parents insisted that she go.
